Plan S and purpose: The future direction for UK learned societies

• A group of UK-based learned societies were anonymously interviewed to understand how trends are affecting their missions, strategies, and operations.
• The societies' missions focus on supporting academics and disseminating knowledge, with publishing being a means to achieve those goals rather than an end in itself.
• The responses were concerned about addressing open access (OA) but, particularly in the post-COVID-19 era, this was not necessarily their highest priority.
• The societies expressed reliance on larger corporate publishers on them to navigate the transition to OA publishing.
• The societies' focus is on evolving their missions to meet the changing needs of their academic communities, with issues around premises as a result of COVID-19 being more pressing than publishing industry changes.
• The societies face challenges in adapting to the shift to online and digital operations, particularly in regards to maintaining engagement with their members.

Introducing computational social science for Asia-Pacific communication research

Computational social science has caused a shift of research paradigm in social science in general and communication in particular. The special issue brings together a community of active researchers to introduce computational social science for Asia-Pacific communication research. Map Use Across the Disciplines

Abstract

University map libraries are not just for geographers, geologists, and the occasional archaeologist or historian. In running the Edwin J. Foscue Map Library at Southern Methodist University for the past five years, the author observed persons from a wide array of disciplines using map library resources. The research performed for this article demonstrates that maps are a useful expression of knowledge in every major academic discipline. The result is a better understanding of the scope of map use in academia, and of the broad role that map libraries serve in virtually every discipline.     

NOAH (New York Online Access to Health)

Abstract

NOAH (New York Online Access to Health) is a Web site developed by four library partner organizations, in an effort to provide timely, accurate and unbiased health information to the health consumers in New York City in both English and Spanish. Since expanded to include two other partner organizations, NOAH continues, with the help of volunteer librarians, to expand and enhance the site, always with the mission to provide full-text health information in the most user-friendly method possible.

A Magazinist's View of the Encyclopedia of Associations

American society is characterized by its division into numerous subcultures which are represented by a great variety of oranizations, societies, and associations. Many of these groups publish periodical literature which for the most part, with a few notable exceptions, is poorly represented in library holdings. However the Encyclopedia of Associations and its companion Association Periodicals provide excellent access to national level organizations and their journals. Examples are given of interesting associations whose periodicals are acquired by relatively few libraries. Librarians should make the extra effort which may be needed to sample and acquire more of this category of serial publications.     

Organizational Dissent as a Function of Organizational Justice

This study examined the relationships between perceptions of organizational justice and enacting organizational dissent. Participants were 107 full-time employees working in various organizations. Results indicated that employee perceptions of distributive and interpersonal justice negatively predicted latent dissent, while perceptions of informational justice positively predicted latent dissent. Perceptions of interpersonal justice were the strongest predictor of latent dissent. Perceptions of justice were not related to articulated or displaced dissent. Future research should continue to explore triggering agents of dissent in organizations.

Objectives: After completing this single-class activity, students should be able to (1) identify stereotypes that are created and/or reinforced by images frequently used in communication materials, (2) explain how those stereotypes influence communication and relational barriers in organizations, and (3) propose ways to overcome implicit stereotypes in organizational settings.
