Publishing in Kosova/Kosovo

Abstract

Albanian-language publishing in Kosova during the 1990-1999 period was very much affected first by Serbian censorship and persecution, then by the war. The situation has improved since the fighting stopped in the summer of 1999, with most of the seven main publishers having reopened. The author reviews major newspapers, news magazines and other periodicals from Kosova, then lists books by important authors brought out by various publishers. The Internet has proven an important means of communicating news and culture, especially during the recent disruptions; several sites are listed. A section follows showing some significant library collections of Kosovar Albanian material. The author suggests acquiring such publications directly from their publishers and gives contact information. Finally, there is an English-language bibliography of recommended reading about Kosova in general.     

近百年中国图书史研究述评

19世纪末以来,众多学者运用不同的历史观及图书史观.对中国图书史的源流及其规律予以阐释研究,取得了丰硕成果,也深深打上了时代烙印,显示出明显的阶段性与层次性.目前学术界对于这些成果的梳理和研究还显得很单薄.试以代表性的书史研究著作为主要分析对象.对近百年中国图书史的研究情况做一分析评价,并初步总结出不同时期图书史研究的特点.     

汉文古籍特藏藏品定级谈

古籍特藏藏品包括汉文古籍及特藏藏品和少数民族文字古籍及特藏藏品两大部分.其中,汉文古籍特藏藏品包括人们习见的普通形制的古籍以及简帛古籍、敦煌遗书、佛教古籍、碑帖拓本、古地图等六部分.这六部分各有自身的特点,难以在层级等次上找出统一的标准.有鉴于此,汉文古籍特藏藏品定级将六部分各自制定等级标准,从而使每个标准都能更加贴切、具体地反映该部分的自身特质.纵观《汉文古籍特藏藏品定级》（草案）的全部条款,一个极为鲜明的特点是“有时限”,在“有时限”的前提下,又表现出“不唯时限”的理念,因学术价值高低而上靠或下调,此外还有在艺术方面表现出来的代表意义.

《第一批国家珍贵古籍名录图录》是"中华古籍保护计划"的最新成果,具有极高的版本学价值,体现在以下几个方面:鲜活地再现了我国现存珍贵古籍的原貌;是书影产生以来的集大成之作;所揭示的版本形式齐全;记录的典籍收藏流变清晰可见;版本鉴定严谨,说明文字内容丰富。     

水木嫏嬛——清华大学图书馆古文献的传承整理和数字化建设

清华大学图书馆古文献的传承、整理倾注了几代古籍工作者的心血。为使这笔宝贵文化遗产得到根本保护,又充分被利用,图书馆正致力于这批文献的数字化:从古籍书目数据库、古籍联合目录数据库的建设,到以中美百万册书数字化联合项目为开端,借助清华强大的理工科技术优势,引入国际合作,建立清华古文献数字图书馆。     

Librarianship and Information Science in the Maghreb 1966–1999: An Annotated Bibliography

This work is an annotated bibliography that consists of articles, books, conference papers, dissertations, reports, etc. published in various library and information science forums on the subject of librarianship in the Maghreb. The goal of preparing this work is to provide a list of citations with abstracts that librarians, library students, and library scholars can use to perform research within this subject area and further the body of knowledge. The research methodology that was used to find these citations involved searching the database versions of ERIC, Dissertations Abstracts Online, and Library Literature within the online public access catalog of the Auburn University library system. It also involved searching the online databases of Library and Information Science Abstracts (LISA), British Education Index, andEducation Abstracts within the DIALOG database as well as the respective print versions of these resources. While this work is by no means an exhaustive critique of the entire Maghrebi library and information science literature, it does strive to be comprehensive in terms of its country-by-country analysis of librarianship and information science within the region. In providing a citation for a non-English language work, the English equivalent of the title of that work will be given next to the non-English title.

Resources on Animals and the Law

SUMMARY

Animals have been viewed, by the laws of societies, simply as “things” throughout recorded history. Only recently have books been written promoting or simply discussing the possible granting of legal status to animals. The author presents a thorough list of these materials, with brief reviews.

选取21种医学获奖图书作为样本,通过清华同方引文数据库和维普引文数据库,借用引文计量分析方法,统计图书被引频次、作者被引频次、作者h指数、出版社h指数。研究结果显示h指数可以作为图书学术评估的一个定量评价。     

Master Reference Librarians for a New Age

Summary

In 1990 the authors conducted interviews with “Master” reference librarians in an effort to determine if these librarians shared traits which could be used to predict success in the field of reference Hbrarianship. From these interviews a list of eight shared characteristics was developed. In the six intervening years, reference collections and reference work have changed greatly and the authors began to wonder if the list of characteristics remained valid in the electronic reference world. Interviews with “New Age Masters” were used to determine which characteristics were still valid and to identify any new traits needed to succeed. The librarians were also asked to speculate on the future of reference Hbrarianship.     

关于我国图书馆界开展图书寄存服务的几点思考

图书寄存是图书馆馆藏资源建设的一种重要方式。我国图书馆事业发展早期,图书寄存深受业界重视,成功案例为数众多,积累了丰富的经验。在当前环境下,图书馆界开展寄存服务有着现实的意义和重要性。目前,有的图书馆已经开始推行古籍寄存服务。在此基础上,寄存服务完全可以在更大的范围内推广,图书馆界可以借助宣传效应和法律手段,借鉴图书馆界的历史经验和档案界的实践经验,广泛吸纳图书寄存。     

Bibliographical control in South Africa

This work is an annotated bibliography that consists of articles, books, conference papers, dissertations, and reports, etc. published in various library and information science forums on the subject of librarianship in Islamic East Africa. The goal of preparing this work is to provide a list of citations with abstracts that librarians, library students, and library scholars can use to perform research within this subject area and further the body of knowledge. The research methodology that was used to find these citations involved searching the database versions of ERIC, Dissertations Abstracts Online, and Library Literature within the online public access catalog of the Auburn University library system. It also involved searching the online databases of Library and Information Science Abstracts (LISA), British Education Index, and Education Abstracts within the DIALOG database as well as the respective print copies of these resources. While this work is by no means an exhaustive analysis of the entire East African library literature, it does strive to be comprehensive in terms of its country-by-country breakdown of librarianship within the region. Islamic East Africa for the purposes of this work incorporates the nations of Comoros, Djibouti, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Somalia, Sudan, and Tanzania. In providing a citation for a non-English language work, the English equivalent of the title of that work will be given next to the non-English title.     

Serials Management in the New Shanghai Library

Abstract

With a total floor space of 83,000 square meters, the new Shanghai Library, which opened on 20 December 1996, is among the top ten largest libraries in the world. The library was perhaps the first in China to implement international standards. In the early 1980s the Shanghai Library began cataloguing foreign books and periodicals following Western practices. In 1980, the library compiled a draft set of cataloguing rules for foreign serials based on ISBD(S). The library and the Library Society of Shanghai then organised a number of training classes for serials librarians from all over the country. Earlier, in December 1979, the Sixth Subcommittee of the National Document Standardisation Committee had begun compiling a set of cataloguing rules for serials. A draft based on ISBD(S), written by staff of the library, was put forward to the Fuzhou (city) Meeting in March 1983. After several discussions and revisions the National Standard Bureau finally approved the rules (GB 3792.3-85). In order to further the stardardisation of serials management, the Shanghai Library has issued its catalogue cards for serials to other libraries and information units. The catalogue cards have been widely distributed to the Chinese library community. Because of these developments, the library has become a de facto centre of serials research in the country.     

Truth vs. Authenticity: Dealing with More “Good” Books Going “Bad” and Seeking Opportunities for Catalog Record Enhancement

ABSTRACT

Discusses the challenges and opportunities inherent in enhancing the catalog record for books that have developed documented reputations at odds with earlier certifications of authenticity, credibility, and quality. Librarians, as historically arbiters only of order and access, are reluctant to engage books beyond their organization and their facts. The author features a number of books and authors whose reputations have been recently and rightly sullied and argues that libraries should approach these works with the goal and giving them new contexts for the patron.     

The Slavist in the Digital World: Creating Scholarly Resources in Partnership with Librarians at the University of Virginia

ABSTRACT. This article offers a brief discussion of two projects—the creation of a set of digital images of Russian art and an exhibit of modern Russian children's books—developed in collaborative partnership between a Slavist and librarians at the University of Virginia. Both of these projects were designed to create shareable, flexible, and sustainable resources for research and educational use. The challenges and benefits of collaborative partnerships between scholars and librarians are discussed, and models for conceptualizing the relationships are also proposed.

图书采购由于馆藏建设机制的制约、购书经费不足和购书观念落后等因素,馆藏图书的深度和广度难满足读者需求。广州铁路职业技术学院图书馆通过建立“采访员工作室”,开展“新书荐购”、“跟踪调查”、“问卷调查”和“畅销书排行榜”等系列活动,搭建读者参与图书馆馆藏建设平台,以读者需求为调节手段,实现图书采购从静态到动态的运行机制,全面提高图书采购质量。     

Developing Teaching Competencies for Instructors in the Academic Library

Abstract

A university library developed a list of teaching competencies with three goals in mind: (1) to improve the quality of teaching in the information literacy program, (2) to create an outline for training in pedagogy, and (3) to provide a mechanism for self and peer assessment in library instruction. The authors describe the development process and discuss the rationale for each set of skills and behaviors. The article includes the list of competencies.     

Audience ratings of the “naturalness” of spoken and written sentences

The authors of this research report list and discuss certain methodological and theoretical problems which they find in the Speech Monographs article on “Heart Rate as an Index of Speech Anxiety” by Ralph Behnke and Larry Carlile.
