西夏文化一个突出特点是多元性,这与西夏实行开放的国策密不可分。深厚的民族基础,以及经济、政治、文化上的因素决定了西夏文化的多元性。西夏文化的多元性体现在诸多方面,如制度、艺术、宗教等等。

Navigating a Way through Plurality and Social Responsibility

Teachers need to have a clearer understanding of the dynamic process effecting change in culture and identity if they are to overcome fears about teaching diversity. This article draws on Eastern and Western insights on culture to clarify its dynamic process. In particular, teachers need to be aware of the two phases of culture: in one it appears as an organic integrity that suffers violence when any aspect of it is changed, removed or replaced; in the other it appears as a mechanical assemblage of parts momentarily caught in a particular relationship, comfortable with change. Each moment requires appropriate curriculum planning and pedagogical practice. Crucial to achieving that end is keeping the two phases distinct while exploring and exposing their relationship in culture and identity transformation. This will help a great deal to alleviate teachers’fears about teaching diversity or multiculturalism.

流散文学很重要的表现内容是对自我身份的探索和文化身份认同。印裔美籍流散作家裘帕·拉希莉的小说《同名人》描写了两代印度移民自我身份探索中的困境、文化融合等问题。在"第三空间"的视角下,文章分析该小说中第二代印度移民面对家庭内家国文化与家庭外异质文化之间冲突与抉择时,通过与异族青年婚恋这种方式,在多种文化间进行自身身份的探索,从而获得身份认同和文化归属感。     

The Importance of Body Language in Cultures

Communication is necessary to people’s daily life. Although we may not realize it when we talk with others, we make ourselves understood not only by words. Body language sometimes helps make the communication easy and effective. Body language is treated as equivalent to nonverbal communication which sends 65 percent communication message. In order to improve the quality of our communication, we should pay more attention to nonverbal communication. In addition, culture influences communication. Different country has different culture. Every culture has its own body language. It is useful to learn more about such body language, especially the using of body language in different culture.

本文从《喜福会》中的四对母女间存在的矛盾冲突来探讨体现在两代华裔身上的东西方文化冲突。由于东西方不同的文化传统、对生存的不同理解造成了小说中母女之间的冲突,同时也代表了东西方文化冲突产生的主要根源。     

The Two Cultures of Undergraduate Academic Engagement

Using data on upper-division students in the University of California system, we show that two distinct cultures of engagement exist on campus. The culture of engagement in the arts, humanities and social sciences focuses on interaction, participation, and interest in ideas. The culture of engagement in the natural sciences and engineering focuses on improvement of quantitative skills through collaborative study with an eye to rewards in the labor market. The two cultures of engagement are strongly associated with post-graduate degree plans. The findings raise questions about normative conceptions of good educational practices in so far as they are considered to be equally relevant to students in all higher education institutions and all major fields of study.

大学生文化与大学文化——从二元对立走向多元文化系统

当前大学生文化具有明显的专业性、世俗化、双重性及互象征文化、前象征文化的特点。这些大学生独有的文化特点与所属大学文化产生了相互影响作用：一方面,大学文化对大学生文化的专业化特征形成、文化过滤,及帮助学生文化向成人文化转变具有决定性作用;另一方面,大学生文化又推动大学文化个性化、多元开放及创新发展。因此,基于新的社会背景,需要变革视大学文化与大学生文化为主、亚文化的二元对立观念,树立多元文化系统的观念。
