A bstract .  In this essay, Mordechai Gordon explores the significance of Rilke's challenge to "live the questions" and embrace uncertainty with respect to the quest for certainty in education. The quest for certainty in education refers to our desire to gain a sense of psychological security and more control over a field that is fundamentally indeterminate. This quest implies an unwillingness to live with the inherent complexities and risks of education. After exploring the meaning and import of Rilke's challenge and comparing it to the position of Socrates, Gordon uses Rilke's insight to analyze a specific educational experience and then discusses some of its educational implications for teacher education.  相似文献

Like chemistry, which is a very large field of study (a discipline) with many subareas (embedded disciplines) within it, education is also a large discipline with embedded disciplines, including science education. However, chemistry and other sciences are theoretical disciplines, based on the fact that information within these disciplines is stable. Certain other disciplines in which the information is not as stable are classified as practical or productive, and in these theorizing is limited to small, localized, theories rather than the development of large explanatory models. Since the knowledge in education (including science education) is not particularly stable, this area is a combination of a practical and a productive discipline. Major theories are, then, not possible and research efforts should be directed toward (1) smaller, localized, theories, (2) application of borrowed theories from other disciplines, and (3) stabilization of knowledge.  相似文献

Lifelong learning and continued education are essential for older people who want to stay involved in a rapidly changing world. However, in the later years of life, it may be even more important to acquire the timeless and universal knowledge of wisdom. Whereas intellectual knowledge enables elderly people to stay involved in worldly affairs, wisdom-related knowledge helps them to prepare for the physical and social decline of old age and ultimately their own death. Moreover, while intellectual knowledge tends to decrease with advancing age, the relationship between wisdom and aging is potentially positive, provided that cognitive deterioration does not become pathological. By illustrating the difference between intellectual and wisdom-related knowledge in the areas of goals, approach, range, acquisition, effects on the knower, and relation to aging, it is argued that wisdom rather than intellectual knowledge is crucial for aging well.  相似文献

The regression equations for second quarter freshman grade point averages on SAT scores were calculated for Anglo-American and Mexican-American students at the University of California, Riverside. These regression equations differed significantly for the two groups. However, the use of the regression equation derived from the Anglo-American sample to predict grades of Mexican-American students resulted in overprediction. An examination of the standardized regression weights revealed a significant difference in the weight given to SATM. A replication on a much larger sample revealed a similar outcome. These results were considered as a possible heuristic to suggest a scholastic "'strategy" difference between the two ethnic groups.  相似文献
