How narratives move your mind: A corpus of shared-character stories for connecting emotional flow and interestingness

Creativity is considered a human characteristic; creative endeavors, including automatic story generation, have been a major challenge for artificial intelligences. To understand how humans create and evaluate stories, we (1) construct a story dataset and (2) analyze the relationship between emotions and story interestingness. Given that understanding how to move readers emotionally is a crucial creative technique, we focus on the role of emotions in evaluating reader satisfaction. Although conventional research has highlighted emotions read from a text, we hypothesize that readers’ emotions do not necessarily coincide with those of the characters. The story dataset created for this study describes situations surrounding two characters. Crowdsourced volunteers label stories with the emotions of the two characters and those of readers; we then empirically analyze the relationship between emotions and interestingness. The results show that a story’s score has a stronger relationship to the readers’ emotions than the characters’ emotions.     

Fingerprinting the mind

Until recently the identification of the authorship of written works has—like that of paintings—been largely subjective, but the application of the computer to analysis of literary structure has opened up important new possibilities. It has shown that simple frequency patterns are of much less diagnostic value than groupings of words and their position in sentences. Stylometry, as this new investigative method is called, has the merit of knowing no language barriers—it is equally applicable, for example, to classical Greek, English, and Swedish.

荒野思想与美国国家公园的荒野管理——以约瑟米蒂荒野为例

荒野区域是濒临灭绝动植物的栖息地,是自然变化的历史记录者,是人类与自然的契合点。本文从时间和事件两个维度出发,梳理荒野思想的发展进程和美国国家公园的荒野管理,以园内土地94%是荒野的美国约瑟米蒂国家公园为例,剖析约瑟米蒂荒野管理的两大重要因素：公园管理和游客参与。国家公园管理局的介入与支持,实现了约瑟米蒂荒野的商业服务、设备使用、游径设置和承载力监管;游客参与包括国家公园荒野管理计划制定、遵守荒野管理规定和支持荒野管理创新等。事实证明,美国国家公园管理局参与荒地管理,既保护了荒野,又满足了游客的游憩和教育,其模式值得研究、借鉴与推广。     

Put your money where your mouth is: Using deep learning to identify consumer tribes from word usage

Internet and social media offer firms novel ways of managing their marketing strategy and gain competitive advantage. The groups of users expressing themselves on the Internet about a particular topic, product, or brand are frequently called a virtual tribe or E-tribe. However, there are no automatic tools for identifying and studying the characteristics of these virtual tribes. Towards this aim, this paper presents Tribefinder, a system to reveal Twitter users’ tribal affiliations, by analyzing their tweets and language use. To show the potential of this instrument, we provide an example considering three specific tribal macro-categories: alternative realities, lifestyle, and recreation. In addition, we discuss the different characteristics of each identified tribe, in terms of use of language and social interaction metrics. Tribefinder illustrates the importance of adopting a new lens for studying virtual tribes, which is crucial for firms to properly design their marketing strategy, and for scholars to extend prior marketing research.     

Domestic science: making chemistry your cup of tea

In the early Victorian home, there were plenty of scientific lessons to be uncovered. With the appropriate interrogation, everyday objects could transform seemingly mundane activities such as eating breakfast, washing clothes or reading by candle-light into household lectures that gave children a familiar base from which to explore the hidden properties and marvellous histories of common commodities. Responding to an unprecedented hunger for scientific knowledge, a profusion of introductory texts appeared in the mid-nineteenth century that directed lessons into homes across Britain and beyond. In particular, the science of chemistry found its way into this domestic setting, as writers promoted its practice and practitioners as a source of authoritative expertise on everyday life. One of the most compelling illustrations of this encounter between the public and chemistry took place over a simple cup of tea.
