Parset: A language construct for system independent parallel programming on distributed systems

Parallel programming on loosely coupled distributed systems involves many system dependent tasks such as sensing node availability, creating remote processes, programming inter-process communication and synchronization, etc. Very often these system-dependent tasks are handled at the programmer level. This has complicated the process of parallel programming on distributed systems. The portability of these programs is also severely affected. The programmer may also start his remote processes on heavily loaded nodes, thereby degrading the overall performance of the system. To overcome these difficulties, we introduce a language construct called parset at the programming level. Parset captures various kinds of coarse grain parallelism occurring in distributed systems. It also provides scalability to distributed programs. We show that this construct greatly simplifies writing programs on distributed systems providing transparency to various system dependent tasks.     

An interactive programming environment for personal microsystems supporting distributed processing

The article presents an interactive programming system for personal computation, especially in the scientific and engineering domains. The system is modular and provides an elaborate and original user input interface quite different from the single line input editors found in many interactive systems. High-level programming is done in a new language named Fifth. Fifth is a simple language yet allowing efficient and structured programming. It uses untyped 32 bit data words and postfix notation. Block structure is provided by a notion of objects. Programs are input incrementally in a bottom up fashion but tools for top down programming are provided too. The Fifth compiler is implemented in a multi-processor system with the so-called Intemex architecture. It automatically employs several processors to execute a Fifth program. The programming system also allows assembler level programming, and it gives access to all processor classes in the system, including peripheral subprocessors.

New Cryptography and Computer Security Teaching Methods Using Network Technologies

According to a detailed analysis of modern global trends, the approaches to teaching cryptography and computer security are becoming more practical and actively draw on information from global networks and code-design methods. Security system architects must have deep expertise in programming methods, especially cryptographic algorithm programming procedures, and rapidly navigate in vast amounts of information in global networks using system-analysis methods.     

Radio Station Innovation and Risk Taking: A Survey of Programmers and General Managers

We conducted a survey of radio station program directors and general managers to explore the perception and role of innovation within radio programming and the key factors that influence this perception. In the study, we found that, in general, programmers and general managers perceive little innovation in programming except at their own stations. Results also indicate perceptions that more risk taking is needed in radio programming, that risk taking is essential for the financial health of a station, that increased artist diversity and an innovative music rotation influence the perception of innovation at the station level, and that too many commercials are being placed within an average hour of programming.     

Market Size,Preference Externalities,and the Availability of Foreign Language Radio Programming in the United States

Using data for 320 radio stations operating in the 50 largest Arbitron metro radio markets during 2004 that offered at least some programming in 1 or more of 19 different foreign languages, strongly positive statistical relations were found between the size of foreign language populations in the radio market and the amount, or variety, of radio programming in their respective language that is available. A preference externality effect was also found: consistently negative relations between the variety of foreign language programming available and size of the English language population. Similar results were found for a measure of programming quality: the percentage of news and talk programming that is locally produced. Conventional wisdom that minority populations tend to be “underserved” by media is generally supported.

Argumentation semantics for Active Logic step theories with granulation of time

Active Logic is a conceptual system with principles that are satisfied by reasoning formalisms that are contradiction-tolerant and allow for matching of the reasoning outcomes with moments of time. This paper proposes an approach to building an argumentation semantics for one of such formalisms built on the basis of the logic programming principles. Meanwhile, the concept of granulation of time is applied, with the latter being construed as an external entity that is not dependent on the internal structure of the logic program. The specifics of Active Logic with time granulation demanded a considerable modification of the proposed system of argumentation in comparison to other systems of the type that are available.

Informative Radio Models in Brazil: The All-News Networks

This study analyzes the particularities of Brazilian radio networks that adopt the all-news format and briefly presents the main national and international experiences for the implementation of the model and its conceptualization. Besides the bibliographic review, we use the multiple-case study, analyzing as the empirical objects CBN and BandNews FM networks. Also, we apply methodological procedures of systematic non-participant observation, supplemented by interviews and surveys. We conclude that the different all-news programming models and network organizations influence the processes of production, information structure, broadcasting language, and therefore the stations' profile.
