Mentors have the potential to influence important academic and career outcomes. I examine the impact of one type of mentor – academic advisors – on student outcomes at the United States Air Force Academy. Exploiting the random assignment of advisors to first-year students, I find that these mentors influence students in different ways. Male and nonwhite students earn higher grades in courses in their advisors’ academic department, providing evidence that they are more likely to study and/or seek extra help because of their advisor. Advisor’s department is not associated with improved grades for female students; however, they are more likely to declare a major in their advisor’s department. I believe this provides unique evidence on the influence of academic advisors at academic institutions.  相似文献

Purpose: The aim of the paper is to explore how advisors’ relational and professional competence influences inter-subjectivity and farmers’ perceptions of farm visits in a setting where advisors have formal power.Methodology: Advisors from the dairy company Tine, which is owned by farmers in collaboration, visit farmers at least once a year. The aim of the visit is to assist farmers in managing the farm and to control the production conditions in the cowshed. In a case study, we attended 10 such mandatory advisor visits and interviewed both farmers and advisors.Findings: Together with advisor style, our findings show that the power relation leaves room for advisors to define their roles widely, ranging from inspector to coach. Advisors have different perceptions of what their jobs are and when they have done a good job. These differences determine the degree of inter-subjectivity and how satisfied farmers are with visits. Furthermore, advisors’ relational and professional competencies are crucial for achieving high inter-subjectivity and satisfied farmers.Theoretical implications: This paper contributes to the theory by identifying factors that influence farmers’ perceptions of advisor visits, as well as by showing the importance of the advisor’s relational and professional competence in a setting where they have formal power.Practical implications: Partly as an outcome of this study, Tine has started a process to separate the control function from farm visits. Tine has also decided to let farmers choose advisors themselves. Originality/value: The power relation in our study differs from most consultant–client interactions in the literature.  相似文献

The pedagogical advisors play a central role in students’ experience of the training process. Nevertheless, the students’ perception of the role of the pedagogical advisor is absent. Consequently, our study focused on this missing link. Our study included 118 participants enrolled in an academic teacher training education program in one college in Israel. Open questionnaires, focus groups, and interviews were used to ascertain—for the first time in Israel—students’ views of the role of the pedagogical advisors. A uniform voice identified in participants’ responses clearly expressed a desire to be viewed as partners and have a more active role in the program in terms of their own learning process. At the same time, they also expected their pedagogical advisors to lend not only professional but also personal support and to help them cope with all aspects of the program.  相似文献

In the past decade, there has been a rapid increase in the number of Chinese international students studying overseas. There has also been a corresponding increase in the media stories about their cross-cultural difficulties. Reported in this study is a reflective inquiry into my work as an international student advisor with a large number of Chinese students in a top Canadian university. Through five composite stories, I hope to present a few areas of challenges Chinese students experience and reflect on how advisors can better support them from the intercultural perspective. I also hope to engage other advisors through this study in exploring ways to contribute to the field of international education as frontline practitioners.  相似文献

The author, a Czech émigré scholar, reflects both on his return to his homeland, after the 1989 Velvet Revolution, as an advisor to the Czechoslovak Ministry of Education, Youth, and Sports, and in general, on the question of the influence of foreign (Western) advisors in the countries of Central and Eastern Europe undergoing transition. His initial experience was that of a foreign advisor, given his background and the number of years of absence from his homeland. In addition to delivering lectures on the reform of education, he took part in the setting up of TEMPUS programmes and in preparing the 1992 OECD review of Czech and Slovak higher education. Then later, as a returned Czech academic more than as a foreign advisor, he contributed to the elaboration of the 1995-1996 review of the whole educational system of the Czech Republic. His general conclusion is that the work of foreign advisors can be valuable if the given advisors really understand the local environment and the language; however, there may be some time lag as to the adoption of their recommendations.  相似文献

对高校部分辅导员和大学生的调查显示,在学生的评价中,与辅导员关系“十分好”的为2.5%(他评)-7%(自评),“较好的”的为21.69/6(自评)-35.1%(他评),“一般好”的为60%(他评)-68.7%(自评)。是否为党员或学生干部对与辅导员的关系和评价有显著影响。随年级变化,辅导员与学生关系类型大体有:主导型、师生型、朋友型、引导型、互敬互助型。其中一年级新生与辅导员的关系以引导型为主,高年级则以朋友型为主。  相似文献

目前,多数高校辅导员考核过于主观和模糊。虽然辅导员工作的内容并非都能够量化,但实践表明,能够量化的内容应该量化。量化考核应兼顾必要性和可操作性,所占比重不宜过大,且应坚持激励与“底线”相结合,定性定量相结合,要逐步完善定性定量考核办法,充分发挥考核在辅导员队伍建设中的积极作用。  相似文献

Summary

The purpose of co-operation between advisors and farmers during formulation and solving of farm-management problems is to improve the efficiency of farm-management advice and to improve the adaptation of farm management to the increasing uncertainty which presently characterises the agricultural sector. The aim of the present study was to design a tool that supports co-operation between a management advisor and a farmer when they work together on the farmer's management problems. This was performed within a management centre with a group of farmers and advisors. We describe our design approach in order to point out the discrepancies between farmers' and advisors' conceptions of the advisory relation as well as the way the group overcame these discrepancies by building up support for the advisory relation. We refer to this type of support as co-monitoring support as it is geared towards maintaining a common operative frame of reference and a periodical re-examination of the advisor's role in the problem-solving process. The support tools are under test in the management centre. We finally discuss the relevance of the design approach according to the use of the support by advisors and farmers.  相似文献

The doctoral advisor is said to be one of the most important persons—if not the single most critical person—with whom doctoral students will develop a relationship during their doctoral degree programs (Baird 1995). However, we have limited knowledge regarding how doctoral advisors see their roles and responsibilities as advisors. Therefore, through in-depth interviews, we explored the perceptions of 25 exemplary doctoral advisors, who have graduated a large number of doctoral students, about their roles and responsibilities as advisors. We conclude this article with implications for doctoral education.

ABSTRACT

Although frequently challenging, faculty advising continues to be a crucial component of social work education. Yet the current diversity of students, educational programs, and field placements present many ethical dilemmas to the faculty advisor. This paper explores the administrative, educational, and supportive roles of the faculty advisor, the inherent conflicts which develop and the effects of these conflicts on the ethical advising of social work students.

Similar to the classroom teacher, the faculty advisor can positively model ethical social work practice to students. Case examples from faculty advisors are used to study ethical dilemmas which arise in promoting social work values of self-determination and confidentiality. Recommendations are made to promote ethical practice among faculty advisors.  相似文献

Previous research finds that both Ph.D. program quality and relative dissertation advisor prominence are positively related to early-career publishing success. We provide insight into the relative importance of those factors by estimating early-career research productivity functions that: (1) allow relative dissertation advisor prominence to vary while holding Ph.D. program quality constant and (2) allow Ph.D. program quality to vary while holding relative dissertation advisor prominence constant. Results for a sample of 2983 economics Ph.D. recipients suggest that: (1) the estimated marginal effects of relative dissertation advisor prominence do not vary systematically within top Ph.D. programs and (2) students graduating from a program-switching advisor's higher-ranked program publish significantly more than those graduating from his or her lower-ranked program. Combined, these results might suggest that the observed correlation between dissertation advisor prominence and early-career publishing results more from students working with prominent advisors possessing the higher innate potential required to gain admission to top programs rather than strictly because they work with the more prominent advisor.  相似文献

Generating true learning dialogue as opposed to a collection of loosely affiliated posted messages on a class discussion board can be challenging. This paper presents the results of a cross‐case analysis of nine naturalistic case studies of online classes, looking at how activity design and facilitation factors affected various dimensions of student participation. Findings show that use of guidelines, deadlines and feedback and type of instructor presence affect the resulting discourse in an online class. Additionally, the paper explores how particular types of learning activities are better suited to generating discussion than others and how the integration of discussion activities with the rest of the course activities and requirements impacts learner motivation and participation.  相似文献

Researchers observed their students’ frequent choices to use technology and the students' weak developmental math course completion rates. These observations piqued researchers' interest to find a new approach to improve students’ math learning—utilizing disruptive innovation. The purpose of this study was to understand students’ perceptions about learning developmental math with a Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) and face-to-face group activities interwoven with psychology of learning concepts. Research findings suggest that MOOCs used in developmental math coursework can improve math success, and group work within face-to-face classrooms can increase connectivity to learning. A MOOC was merged with face-to-face psychology of learning group projects, and students described increased connectivity to their learning. For example, Haley exclaimed, “So definitely learned how to learn all over again this semester and I’m doing awesome … It’s like I’m breezing through!”  相似文献
