Alternative Feminist Media on the Airwaves: Radio and Women's Music

The author examines radio programs produced by women in the U.S. that feature music by women. Women's music programming offers a variety of music genres and presentation styles. Criteria of music selection also vary, with some programs concentrating solely on women's contributions and musical works, and others that play music by mixed-sex groups and even featuring a male vocal. However, the commonality of all these programs lies in their dedication to highlighting women artists and giving voice to those who would otherwise not be heard. As media artifacts, women's music radio programs offer multiple layers of feminist inquiry.     

Original Cataloging at the New York Chiropractic College Media Resources Library

This article is about the conceptual framework of the original cataloging process that is used to catalog the audiovisual a materials at the New York Chiropractic College Media Resources Library. The cataloging norms serve as the conceptual underpinnings to the Cataloging Policy Manual of the New York Chiropractic College Media Resources Library. The paper describes the use of the various cataloging standards and policies that are used as well as the use and assignment of the National Library of Medicine classification to ensure access to the audiovisual collection.

本文历时检讨了媒体与社会变迁下不同的消费者分析方法,意图从作为传播的广告视角出发,主张一种历史过程意义的新媒体观念,并在批判原有方法的基础上伸张在新媒体环境下空间意识的重要性,指出消费者分析方法将走向以空间想象为主导的结合多种方法的阐述的理路。     

Towards an Understanding about Complexities of Alternative Media: Portrayals of Power in Alternative Media This paper was part of a larger dissertation written by the author at University of Missouri-Columbia.

In this study I conducted qualitative content analysis of alternative media in order to uncover the different categories about corporate power presented to activist audiences in social justice movements. I found that there were two dominant categories about corporate power disseminated through alternative media: (1) “traditional” corporate power and (2) hegemonic corporate power. “Traditional” corporate power is based on the idea that corporations dominate resources in society. Hegemonic corporate power is based on the idea that corporations dominate the ideological assumptions in contemporary society. Both of these categories hold significant implications for comprehension and classification of alternative media.

Narrowmobilization and Tea Party Activism: A Study of Right-Leaning Alternative Media

Past research concerning the theoretical framework of Resistance Performance (RP) has been based on observations of liberal organizations and activists. In the following essay, we engage in a qualitative content analysis of alternative media utilized by conservative “Tea Party” activists to build on the concept of RP. Overall, we discovered that the dominant theme found in much of the content focuses on “purity,” which is considerably different from past RP research that found broad themes of “human rights,” “democracy,” “be the media,” and “principles of unity” embedded within liberal alternative media content. We conclude that the theme of “purity” gives rise to narrowmobilization, which constructs very focused protest communities within right-leaning politics.

Soviet Rock Collection and International Counterculture Archive at the Global Resources Center of the George Washington University Libraries

ABSTRACT

This memoir is my personal story about how I created and came to curate on the International Counterculture Archive collection, which is held in the Global Resources Center of the George Washington University’s (GWU) Gelman library. The first person narrative relates my first encounters with Soviet rock culture and describes how I turned my initial interest into a Ph.D. dissertation on the subculture of Soviet hippies and traditions of Soviet rock music, which subsequently led to my later work as a librarian and curator. I tell the story of my initial encounters with the members of Soviet/Russian rock music subculture and other countercultural personalities and activists during my first trip to Moscow in 1993 to collect samples of Soviet rock music recordings and rock music zines for the European Division of the Library of Congress. During this formative trip I met with a number of counterculture producers and collectors who were instrumental in helping me build the International Counterculture Archive. Upon leaving the Library of Congress, I continued collecting Soviet/Russian countercultural materials on behalf of the Global Resources Center of GWU’s Gelman Library. I talk about the process of creating the Archive at Gelman library, about bureaucratic and financial aspects of this work, and about my many acquisition trips to Moscow, former Soviet republics, and East Central Europe. Much of the narrative centers on my work with Russian collectors and content producers and describes the type of materials that are included in the collection. I also describe how I built the collection of historical Soviet/Russian rock music recordings, focusing on the phenomenon of Soviet/Russian rock music zines and the history of the unique zine collection within the International Counterculture Archive.     

移动的自留地:知识青年、新媒介赋权、场景生产与媒介素养——以大学生的新媒介使用实践为观察

本文以新媒介接纳与使用活跃的知识青年代表之一的大学生为例,采用定性研究为主,结合定量研究,走进大学生日常生活,集中探讨了新媒介对于大学生的社会意义。研究发现,新媒介具有赋权现象;新媒介具有场景生产现象;新媒介对于大学生而言已成了一块移动的自留地。大学生在新媒介的场景中潜移默化地被娱乐,但又表现出较强的抵抗性与自主性。     

大学生媒介素养与高校图书馆服务功能拓展

针对大学生媒介素养缺乏的现状,在对高校图书馆开展媒介素养教育可行性分析的基础上,提出高校图书馆应与时俱进,建立书、刊、报、视听、网络、讲座等多种媒介并存的媒介素养阅览室的新构想,并从三个方面提出具体的实施策略,旨在不断拓展图书馆的服务功能,为提高大学生媒介素养发挥积极的作用。     

传播政治经济学与另类媒介——以韩国与委内瑞拉为例

另类媒介的兴起、运作条件与脉络,以及其成就与局限的评估,具有重要的理论与实践意义,传播政治经济学重视人的动能、强调历史变迁与学术介入,本文因此引述与讨论韩国及委内瑞拉的另类传播现象,舍弃互联网而专注于研讨传统媒介的另类空间。
