The setting of the film Peacock is the smalltown of Heyang, home of the Gao family. The Gaos are not wealthy, but there is no lack of love and warmth among them. The parents are hardworking, honest people. Weihong, the daughter, loves art and is full of dreams, but often feels depressed about her failure to join themilitary. Both her career and her marriage are unsuccessful. The elder son, Weiguo, has a slight mental disorder and is his parents‘ pet, but is often bullied by people outside the family.

In China＇s dancing arena today where most dancers pursue hasty success, it is truly rare to prepare a dance concert for as long as seven years. And more amazingly,the whole production is planned and presented by merely one person who choreographs and directs the dance concert, designs all costumes, stage settings and lighting as well as dances its leading part. But Miao Xiaolong made it. Several months ago, this young talented teacher at the dancing department of the Music School of Shanghai Normal University presented his dance concert ＂The Colors of Water＂ in Shanghai.

Water print on wood is one of the types of wood block printing in ancient China. The earliest records on this printing skill appeared in the Sui Dynasty （581-618 AD） and the oldest extant publication by this printing method is ＂Vajra Sutra＂ made in 868 A.D.. Now Rongbaozhai, an old brand name in Beijing, still use this ancient skill to copy calligraphic and painting works by famous masters and even painting master Qi Baishi couldn＇t tell its copy works from authentic ones. This printing skill has been included in the first National List for Intangible Cultural Heritage.

‘It’s in the Blood,isn’t it?’ The Contested Status of First World War Veterans in Second World War Civil Defence

This article examines how ex-servicemen’s memories of the First World War shaped their experience of working in civil defence during the Second. In response to ongoing public criticism of civil defence as a whole and a dismissive attitude towards veterans in particular, these men expressed a distinct form of ‘useful masculinity’, rooted in their combat experience and developed within the particular context of civil defence. I will argue that through the group setting in which remembering took place, veterans were able to oppose dominant cultural narratives and to develop and express these alternative narratives about their value.
