ABSTRACT

Because of the importance of faculty engagement to achieve our nationwide student completion goals, this paper comprehensively and critically reviews the conceptualizations of faculty and employee engagement in the extant literature. This review is a means to develop an improved, more inclusive, faculty engagement framework. It is a framework that positions adjunct faculty at community colleges—who have been too often marginalized—as a central group that should also benefit from new engagement models.  相似文献

The disparity between the demographics of California’s community college students and faculty is striking. Specifically, underrepresented minority (URM) students represent the largest population at 49%, yet only 22% of faculty are URM. In 1992, legislation was passed to allow community colleges to establish Faculty Diversity Internship Programs (FDIPs) to “promote inclusive efforts to locate and attract qualified graduate students who are members of monitored groups identified by gender, ethnicity, and disability” (Title 5. Education California Code of Regulations, n.d.). This study used a program evaluation to examine two FDIP sites. The study revealed four benefits of participation: (1) mentorship, (2) teaching experience, (3) professional development, and (4) networking and collaboration opportunities. The study found that although the FDIP does not have a significant impact on increasing faculty diversity, it does have a significant impact on preparing faculty for employment in a diverse community college.  相似文献

Community engagement is one of the major innovations that has occurred in higher education over the last 20 years. At the center of this innovation are faculty members because of their intimate ties to the academic mission. This article examines the progress that has been made in understanding this critical area of faculty work. It builds on past research to consider how the conceptualization of faculty community engagement influences the kinds of questions we ask about it and the kinds of recruitment, support, and professional growth we provide. Implications of the study and for the practice of faculty community engagement are provided for researchers, administrators, and faculty members.  相似文献

Perhaps more alarming are the numbers of contingent instructional staff—faculty without long-term employment commitments. However, limited research exists on the working experiences of this major subpopulation of United States professors.

The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore the experiences of part-time contingent community college faculty regarding the assessment processes their institutions implemented. Through interviews, researchers gathered data identifying what 20 part-time contingent faculty professors reported regarding teaching conditions and institutional assessment procedures. Participant interviews revealed two major themes centered on a lack of institutional engagement and meaningful assessment policies or procedures.  相似文献
