Family communication patterns,sex of subject,and communication competence

Two hundred ninety‐nine subjects completed the Revised Family Communication Patterns instrument (Ritchie & Fitzpatrick, ) and the Interpersonal Competence Questionnaire (ICQ; Buhrmester, Furman, Wittenberg, & Reis, ). Results indicate that both family communication patterns and sex of subject influence the ability to enact certain communication skills in both same‐sex friendships and romantic partnerships. Those growing up in a strong conversation‐oriented family are more likely to report the ability to enact a greater number of interpersonal skills in both types of relationships. Women were more likely to report the ability to self‐disclose in a same‐sex friendship; however, a family communication environment that stresses a lower conversation orientation (consensual) diminishes the likelihood of acquiring that skill for women. Women were also more likely to report being able to offer emotional support in both same‐sex friendships and romantic partnerships. Men were more likely to report being able to assert themselves negatively in a same‐sex friendship, and to self‐disclose and manage conflict in a romantic partnership. Additionally, this study found that men and women employ different communication skills depending on the sex of their relational partner. Implications and future research directions are discussed.     

The development of compromising as an alternative to persuasion

Children's responses to situations in which their interests conflicted with those of the other interactant were investigated to determine whether children would attempt to persuade the other or to initiate compromise. One hundred twenty‐seven third, fourth, and sixth graders constructed messages in such situations. There was a tendency for more of the older children than young ones to spontaneously initiate compromise. Results were interpreted in terms of development and communicative skills reflecting the pursual of multiple goals. In this case, older children were concerned not only with their own primary interests, but with those of the other interactant.     

Listener propensity to counterargue,distraction, and resistance to persuasion

This study addresses the question of whether or not persons differ in their general propensity to counterargue and if such differences affect the efficacy of distraction as a persuasion‐enhancing mechanism. Results of the study support the hypothesis that persons having a high propensity to counterargue who are not distracted will be most resistant to persuasion, while distracted persons having a low propensity to counterargue will be least resistant to persuasion.

On March 5, 1946, in Fulton, Missouri, Winston Churchill gave one of his most famous and controversial speeches. The ideas and themes of that speech had been used before and would be again, but never with similar explosive effect. The author attempts to analyze six speeches by Winston Churchill in America to discover the variables that combined to create the effect at Fulton.

Five cueing systems composed of sixteen cues each were used in combination with three topical areas to form cue‐topic pairs which acted as stimulus items for the retrieval of naturally stored information. The results indicate that the subject's own self‐generated cue system significantly facilitated a retrieval of naturally stored information as compared to the other four cue systems.

This study attempted to determine the possible differences in verbal output when normal speaking children were paired with speech defective children in an unstructured communicative situation as compared with the performance of normal speaking children paired with other normal speaking children.

The purpose of this investigation was to determine if maximum articulatory rate of children with articulatory disorders differed significantly from that of normal‐speaking peers. If differences exist between groups, then additional research is indicated to determine whether improving maximum articulatory rate will result in more acceptable articulation.

The role of nonverbal behaviors as distractors in resistance to persuasion in interpersonal contexts

The role of two nonverbal variables, conversational distance and physical self‐presentation, are examined as potential sources of distraction with consequent effects on susceptibility to persuasion. A model of conversational distancing violations is adapted to a distraction perspective to predict how nonverbal variables specifically might function as distractors. Results of an experiment manipulating violations of distancing expectations and physical attractiveness of confederates (N = 350) indicate that both may be sources of distraction, and offer modest support for the prediction that attractive individuals engaging in violations of expectations will serve as positive sources of distraction, leading to greater susceptibility to persuasion. Failure to support the prediction that unattractive individuals engaging in violations of expectations foster more resistance to persuasion is partly explained by the lack of a sufficiently unattractive confederate.

Dogmatism of the speaker and selection of evidence

Previous research on the use of relational maintenance strategies in marriage was replicated and extended by examining diary logs of 103 married couples kept over a two‐week period. Gender differences within the marital dyads were examined. Additionally, the effect of relational satisfaction or comparison level was explored, in terms of an interdependence theory explanation of relational maintenance strategy use. The results showed significant differences between husbands and wives for openness, network, and especially tasks strategies. Wives invariably used more of each type of relational maintenance strategy than their husbands. No effects of relational satisfaction emerged, which suggested that an interdependence theory explanation of relational maintenance strategy use may be inappropriate. An ad hoc assessment of the effect of length of marriage on strategy use was significant and indicated a general decline in the use of all types of strategies as years married increased.
