Surveying scholars’ perceptions of electronic environments: A case study of university libraries in Kerala (India)

This study was conducted to investigate research scholars’ perceptions of the information sources, services and infrastructures in university libraries in Kerala. A survey questionnaire was sent to research scholars working in four universities. The study revealed that the organization of resources and services in university libraries is not fully oriented towards supporting the process of research, and scholars were not satisfied with existing primary resources and personalized services. The study provides recommendations to enhance research-oriented library resources and services.     

Usage of electronic journals and their effect on interlibrary loan: A case study at the University of Nevada, Reno

As libraries increase their electronic journal collections, would dependence on interlibrary loan decrease? This paper reports a case study at the University of Nevada, Reno, University Libraries (UNR) focusing on the usage of the Elsevier online journal package and interlibrary loan (ILL) borrowing activities. It analyzes four-years' worth of UNR usage and ILL statistics, gathered between July 1999 and June 2003. It also provides observations and explanations from a perspective beyond statistics, at the level of library services and the campus demographic and research environments.     

The impact of electronic journals on interlibrary lending: A longitudinal study of statewide interlibrary loan article sharing in Illinois

Interlibrary loan (ILL) article sharing data from the 26 largest libraries in Illinois were collected in 1995/96, 1999/00, and most recently in 2002/03. The OCLC Management Statistics Service supplied the data with the permission of the participating libraries. Longitudinal data analysis focused on the changes that have taken place in article sharing over the past eight years within the state, offering insights into the impact of access to electronic journals. Results show a decline in the number of ILL article requests among the 26 largest libraries in Illinois: a near 26% drop in overall article requests took place between these libraries from 1999/00 to 2002/03, a much larger decline than was expected. The data provide answers to frequently posed questions concerning the impact of electronic journal packages on ILL article sharing and offer some insight concerning the future of ILL in the age of full-text online article availability.     

Digital infrastructure and attitudes towards access and sharing: A case study of selected engineering libraries in the Maharashtra state of India

This article includes a brief profile of selected engineering libraries in Maharashtra state of India and discusses salient issues related to strategic cooperation and consortia, with particular focus on the current situation. It examines the structural, financial and technical factors that have compelled the academic libraries to think about the formation of statewide consortia. The author surveyed forty-nine libraries to get an idea about the current status and explored the possibilities of forming regional consortia with a mission to enhance access to information and knowledge through cooperation for benefit of the engineering communities. The focus is on librarians' perceptions/opinion on the formation of state level consortia; ICT infrastructure; users' needs; collection development policies and the services provided by engineering libraries to the community.     

高校图书馆电子信息资源馆藏建设的原则与问题

文章阐述了高校图书馆在建设电子信息资源馆藏体系中应该遵循的基本原则,对几个特别关注的问题作了分析,并提出相应的解决措施.     

Resource sharing in university libraries: A tool for information interchange

Experience developed in two university libraries, Advertising and Marketing School of Rio de Janeiro library and Medicine Faculty of Petrópolis library, members of CBIES/RJ-resource sharing consortia of Rio de Janeiro State, Brazil, with the aim of identifying benefits for both institutions through their participation in the consortia. The main results are as follows: scientific and technological knowledge sharing, cooperative acquisition of software and databases, and the development of a cooperative online serials catalog; facilities to search for and access information. This experience shows how library consortia are efficient tools to information resource sharing and can contribute to increase the quality of academic education.     

论高校图书馆电子资源的开发利用

分析目前我国高校图书馆电子资源利用率低的原因，探讨电子资源开发利用的有效措施。     

Use of libraries and electronic information resources by primary care staff: outcomes from a survey

OBJECTIVES: To assess the use of existing libraries; usage of the Internet and biomedical databases; and need for training on use of the Internet and biomedical databases for primary care staff. METHODS: A postal survey of general practitioners (GPs), practice nurses (PNs) and practice managers (PMs) in Nottingham and Rotherham, UK. RESULTS: Overall, 243 questionnaires were used. The response rate in Nottingham was 24%, in Rotherham it was 34%. Reported use of libraries was low (30%), with PNs reporting significantly higher usage (65%) than others (P < 0.01). Most respondents reported using the Internet (81%), but fewer (44%) reported using databases. GPs and PNs were significantly more likely to report using databases than PMs (P < 0.01). Lack of training was the most reported barrier to using the Internet (67%) and databases (52%). Overall, 52% of respondents reported wanting Internet training, 64% wanted database training. The percentages requesting training on databases were high among GPs and PNs, but significantly lower for PMs (P = 0.02). CONCLUSIONS: There are differences in the usage of libraries and electronic resources among the primary care team, and in reported training needs. While the reported levels of usage of the Internet and biomedical databases are encouraging, our study identified a training need. If met, this could increase usage further.     

Use of social networking in a linguistically and culturally rich India

Besides highlighting the uses and problems related to social networking, the paper reveals its impact on the linguistically and culturally rich India. It also describes some of the top Indian social networking sites and pinpoints some instances where people have used such sites to raise their voice against the bad elements harming their culture.

结合我国高校图书馆的发展现状以及现代社会对信息资源的需求，阐述高校图书馆开发和利用网络信息资源的可行性和必然性，并提出解决问题的相应对策。     

Rural Libraries- A Comparative Study in Four States of India

Abstract

The role information plays in socio-economic development can not be over-emphasized. People need different types of information in their day-to-day life and their information seeking behaviour also differs from person to person. In India, 70 percent of the population lives in rural areas. The access the rural population has to information sources is very limited. Libraries, in addition to other sources, form a major source of information. However, the libraries in rural areas, as observed from earlier studies, are traditional in nature and not well equipped to effectively cater to the information needs of the rural people. Non-existence of library legislation in various states of India is one of the factors which adversely affected the development of a library system. This present study examines the status of rural libraries in four states of India, the information needs of the people in the study area, and their information seeking behaviour. The study also examines the role of the latest IT techniques in improving the present status of rural libraries.

This study concludes that the libraries existing presently in rural areas are in a poor state of affairs. Lack of adequate resources, financial and human, is identified as the major reason for the present status of rural libraries. As far as information needs, a majority of respondents look for information relating to development schemes, employment opportunities, education, health, etc. Mass media including newspaper, TV, and radio are the major sources of information, followed by relatives/friends, and government officials. This study suggests the transformation of existing libraries or establishing a new set up of dynamic information centres with the help of the latest IT to effectively cater to the information needs of the rural people.

我国高校图书馆法学外文期刊馆藏建设现状及发展策略研究——以复旦、上交大、南大、浙大、东大为例

文章以Guidelan为数据源,根据复旦大学、上海交通大学、南京大学、浙江大学和东南大学五所"985"高校的法学专业建设情况,对各校收藏Scopus和EBSCO的法学外文期刊馆藏建设现状进行调查研究,发现存在纸质外文期刊偏少、纸质外文期刊与电子外文期刊重复收藏较为严重等问题,提出采取以电子期刊为主,适量收藏纸质期刊等措施提升法学外文期刊馆藏建设水平。     

2004-2013年国内图书馆电子资源绩效评价研究与展望

检索CAJD得到2004-2013年有关图书馆电子资源绩效评价文献591篇,采用文献计量学和文献回顾方法分析,发现国内相关研究主要集中在国外研究项目介绍、评价方法研究、评价指标建立等方面,指出了国内相关研究存在研究力量薄弱、研究内容偏理论化、研究方法缺乏可操作性、研究成果单一等问题,提出了以后应加强合作、重视实践研究。

通过Internet对19所农业高校图书馆电子资源建设进行了调查,分析了农业院校图书馆电子资源建设现状和存在的问题,并提出了电子资源建设与发展的建议和对策。
