Starting from Scratch and Getting Somewhere: Assessment of Oral Communication Proficiency in General Education Across Lower and Upper Division Courses

Communication departments are expected to conduct program level assessment, as well as assessment of communication in general education. Although the expectation for data-driven student learning assessment is growing, relatively few examples exist for doing so effectively. This article serves as a model to help faculty conduct effective assessment of communication in general education. Its three objectives are to: (1) report on a completed study of oral communication assessment within general education at both lower and upper-division course levels; (2) provide a pragmatic guide for departments beginning assessment programs; and (3) address foreseeable challenges and benefits.     

A Little Bit Can Go a Long Way: An Examination of Required Service in the Basic Communication Course

This study examines the utility of service-learning pedagogy in the general education basic communication course to meet service-learning outcomes, with an emphasis on civic engagement. Results of the data suggest that students in both a one-time service site and multiple-site condition indicated that the service experience enhanced three of the four service-learning outcomes: (a) personal and interpersonal development, (b) ability to understand and apply knowledge, and (c) sense of citizenship. The service-learning outcome of perspective transformation was not a frequently mentioned theme but did emerge in intensity in the multiple-visit condition. Findings of the study extend experiential learning theory as well as civic engagement theory and support the inclusion of a service-learning basic communication course in the general education curriculum to promote the LEAP initiative.

The Relationships Between Teacher Nonverbal Immediacy and Student Course Workload and Teacher Availability Expectations

The purpose of this study is to identify student expectations for course workload and teacher availability and to assess whether teacher nonverbal immediacy influences these student expectations. Based on a sample of 198 students at a large public university enrolled in a required general education hybrid communication course, students were willing to complete more work than the current course requires, which is comparable to other general education hybrid communication courses in the USA. Additionally, students have moderate to high expectations for teacher availability. Student perceptions of teacher nonverbal immediacy were positively correlated with students’ willingness to engage in their learning (reading, writing, speaking), teacher availability expectations, and tolerance for teacher unavailability.     

Assessing Information Literacy Instruction in the Basic Communication Course

Information literacy is becoming a key component of general education programs nationwide. As a critical part of most general education programs, the basic communication course is on the frontlines of the charge to teach information literacy skills to first-year students. Thus, the information literacy skills of basic course students should be assessed to track the effectiveness of instruction and pedagogical practices. The present study used a pretest/posttest design with experimental and control groups to assess the effectiveness of information literacy instruction in the basic course. As predicted, students in the experimental group outperformed students in the control group on the information literacy measure. Results of the present study have implications for basic course directors and instructors, general education curriculum specialists, and librarians.     

General Education,Graduate Education,and Instruction in the Use of Libraries

Libraries have an important role to play in the general education process, even at the graduate level. An infusion of education about library resources can help to lessen the insularity which characterizes so much of graduate education in the U.S., and could help to break the cycle which perpetuates the lack of communication between academic disciplines. Various roles suggested for academic libraries in this regard include an approach through disciplinary instruction, a "handmaiden approach" to assisting individual graduate students, and a specific general education role for libraries which cuts across disciplines, through the use of seminars and other general education activities. Computer database searching may be a useful fulcrum, in any of these approaches, to broaden the perspective and the interdisciplinary awareness of both graduate students and faculty.     

Using a Targeted Rubric to Deepen Direct Assessment of College Students’ Abilities to Evaluate the Credibility of Sources

At the Sonoma State University Library, a rubric was designed specifically for deepening the assessment of freshmen students’ ability to evaluate the credibility of sources. The course-level rubric was developed after program-level assessments proved too broad to uncover specific challenges in this particular skill. As a direct assessment tool, the rubric allows teaching faculty and librarians to more clearly identify and address the smaller steps required for a student to successfully learn to evaluate a source. The rubric and the results of using it as an assessment tool with a freshmen-level, general education oral communication/critical thinking course are discussed.     

利用远程技术实现图书馆学情报学国际化学术教育

长期以来,图书馆学情报学的教育者们一直致力于探索国际的学术交流和教育合作,以此提高教学课程和专业实践的质量。但目前仍存在很多阻碍,限制了传统的国际化教育的规模和发展,尤其是在发展中国家。该文介绍一个使用现有远程教育技术,在中国与美国之间建立一个面向研究生的知识管理课程的案例。该示范项目由美国富布莱特基金资助,综合利用学习技术、基于互联网的WebCT系统、视频会议、个人间的交流和阅读等多种手段,创建了一个国际化的虚拟学习空间。该文描述了师生们如何实现三个课程目标:(1)采用国际化的学习方式进行教学和学习;(2)双向交流;(3)知识管理。通过研究和实践得出如下结论:使用主动学习教学方法可以促使学生更加投入到学习过程;应用多种技术实现国际化交流;最大化地利用异步交流和同步交流两种方式,鼓励个人和小组学习;关注于更宽泛的多学科内容,促使更多人参与到国际学习环境中。     

数字图书馆的专业教育(英文)

数字图书馆的专业教育近几年来在美国及其他国家迅速发展。网络调查显示大学开设数字图书馆专业课程的数字4年内增加了3倍。目前不但专业信息管理及图书馆院系设置此课程,计算机、通信及工程学院也设置类似课程。从对40多所大学数字图书馆课程的教学大纲、学习重点、课题项目及选用教科书的研究分析中可以看出,多数院系重视学生的实际操作本领,一些注重数字图书馆学的系统教育,一些偏重网络及计算机软件技术的教育。虽然占领先地位的并非都是传统的图书馆院系,有些教授内容也未全部使用此领域的最新研究成果,但将数字图书馆作为一门新学科内容,训练学生掌握使用这门新技能,已成为信息学、信息与计算机技术和信息管理大学课程中的一个热点。数字图书馆专业教育的迅速发展反映了信息管理及图书馆学教育的一个新趋势。     

AN EDUCATION FOR INDEPENDENCE

News industry employers want recruits to meet their stated needs for an ever-expanding range of skills, and their wishes largely determine the form of journalism education. But traditional news work and career paths appear to be dissolving. Boundaries between work in journalism, PR and information brokerage are porous. Careers on which journalism graduates are embarking, like those of many journalists today, are increasingly likely to feature consecutive and concurrent periods of long-term employment, short-term contracts, self-employment, working in temporary clusters on specific projects—and perhaps outside media, news and communication altogether. In the light of these changes, this paper argues that educators should look beyond the demands of traditional employers of journalists and strive to give students the opportunity to become entrepreneurial self-employed agents, who might compete with, as well as serve, other media organisations. The argument here is that students need to gain skills and knowledge to act as reliable analysts and brokers of information in ever-more complex social and political contexts, and, in doing so, develop creative, innovative, experimental and entrepreneurial approaches to journalism. The paper concludes by highlighting several strategies to encompass these objectives within a coherent curriculum, but does not claim that these suggested solutions are exhaustive.

Building Alliances:

College librarians are convinced that using the library is an essential part of a college education, a conviction not necessarily shared by faculty. Integrating library research into courses can be especially difficult at community colleges where faculty have heavy course loads and the curricula are very practical. However, at Hudson Valley Community College, library skills are now part of the College Objectives as well as the English Composition syllabus. Library assignments occur in most general education courses and are the means for adding general education concepts to courses in technology, sciences, business, etc. The librarians have found that by building alliances with the faculty, they can take advantage of opportunities to build library skills into the curricula.

Embedding General Education Competencies into an Online Information Literacy Course

ABSTRACT

Assessing core competencies for students who are enrolled in purely online programs poses a challenge to colleges and universities. Our institution has chosen an existing online information literacy course to incorporate and assess general education competencies for an overseas cohort of transfer students. This article presents a brief overview of the course and describes the way in which the course was redesigned to embed and assess the five general education competencies (critical thinking, information literacy, critical reading, quantitative reasoning, and writing).     

Beyond online preprints: formalization of open initiatives in China

A growing number of online journals and academic platforms are adopting light peer review or ‘publish then filter’ models of scholarly communication. These approaches have the advantage of enabling instant exchanges of knowledge between academics and are part of a wider search for alternatives to traditional peer review and certification processes in scholarly publishing. However, establishing credibility and identifying the correct balance between communication and scholarly rigour remains an important challenge for digital communication platforms targeting academic communities. This paper looks at a highly influential, government‐backed, open publishing platform in China: Science Paper Online, which is using transparent post‐publication peer‐review processes to encourage innovation and address systemic problems in China's traditional academic publishing system. There can be little doubt that the Chinese academic publishing landscape differs in important ways from counterparts in the United States and Western Europe. However, this article suggests that developments in China also provide important lessons about the potential of digital technology and government policy to facilitate a large‐scale shift towards more open and networked models of scholarly communication.

Cataloguing and Classification Education in Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Countries

A content analysis approach was adopted to analyze relevant literature and course syllabi for the purpose of examining cataloguing and classification education in Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) states. Important findings of this study include: traditional knowledge organization is still at the core of bibliographic control education; there are changes and developments in teaching methods; cooperative cataloguing, and partnerships with major specialized utilities are in the interest of educators; and emphasis on the practical part of cataloguing education is increasing to as much as 50% of the total teaching hours in some courses.
