Negotiating Personal and Cultural Significance: A Theoretical Framework for Art Museum Education

This article presents a theoretical framework for those who facilitate engagements with works of art. The aim is to help facilitators negotiate potential differences between the original meaning(s) of an artwork and the fresh interpretations spectators articulate. The author applies Umberto Eco's ideas about literary texts to instances of interpretation in the visual arts. Eco suggests that the implications of unexpected readings change in different situations. Therefore, the facilitators' challenge is in discovering how to handle each individual encounter. To this end, facilitators may wish to ponder: What meaning does the new interpretation conflict with? And what is the distance between the cultural conventions of spectators and the conventions that framed the creation of the work? Real world examples are used to shed light on these questions and their significance.     

Levels of meaning and children: An exploratory study of picture books' illustrations

This study applied Erwin Panofsky's concept of levels of meaning of works of art and Corinne Jorgensen's framework of image attributes to an exploration of the distinct levels of meaning perceived by children in illustrations of picture books. Observations, interviews, and surveys were used for data collection and content analysis and case study for data analysis. Thirty-one three- to five-year old children recruited from preschool, pubic library, and home school settings participated. Findings showed that children relied on their previous experience and familiarity with the literary source to achieve levels of meaning. The concept of levels of meaning could provide a better understanding of representing meaning for children and children's interpretation of meaning of visual information.

The Importance of the Verb in the Reference Question

The development of excellent reference skills is an art, and requires skill. Knowledge of how reference works are organized and work is of utmost importance. The librarian is required, as well, to appreciate and understand user needs. It is necessary to solicit the real question, which often is not the one asked. Here one requires the use of the verb, i.e., effective understanding and use of language. A single example: determining the tense of a verb to decide where or where not to seek the answer.     

Some Theory for the Conservation of Contemporary Art

ABSTRACT

This article analyzes different ontological categories and how they relate to the conservation of contemporary art. Faced with the necessity of apprehending the work of art from an ontological point of view, a theoretical approach is made on the concepts that most affect the conservation of contemporary art: quiddity, truth-authenticity, identity, quality, consistency, and interpretation. These are analyzed from an empirical perspective, based on the experience of conservation and restoration. Since conserving and restoring require making decisions that will affect the material and conceptual plane of the works, several possible paradigms that must be introduced into the deontological code of the profession are analyzed. In addition, the study of a new paradigm is provided, that of the death of the work of art. This paradigm can serve as a frame of reference, given the impossibility of bringing the ‘Truth’ of the artwork into the world of the sensitive. This may occur due to different conditioning factors and limitations of a material, technical, or intentional type, which affect issues that were once established as essential to the entity. On the other hand, different types of time that are related to the conservation of contemporary art are studied: biological time, the eternal present of the work, time as a constructor agent, and destructive time as a facilitator of the appearance of ruin or ruin-relic in the work of art.

Structuring and Disciplining Apology: A Structurational Analysis of Health Care Benevolence Laws

Health care benevolence laws, a form of tort reform law, mandate statements of sympathy or apology by health care providers and facilities in cases of medical mistakes. These laws create a shared language and sense of meaning for individuals involved in the legal aftermath of medical mistakes. Structuration theory guides this textual analysis to explore how benevolence laws discursively create and structure shared meaning about apology. This analysis highlights how benevolence laws structure apology and discursively discipline medical practitioners, underscoring the importance of ambiguity in law interpretation.     

Thomas Hyde,Julia Pettee and the Development of Cataloging Principles; with a Translation of Hyde's 1674 Preface to the Reader

Julia Pettee's claim to find in Thomas Hyde's preface to the Bodleian Catalog of 1674 a formulation of "the first principle of modern cataloging" stands up to the criticism of Eva Verona and Carolyn Frost. Her statement of that principle, "that the cataloger should recognize and assemble literary units under a single caption," faithfully summarizes the common intent of the procedures described in Hyde's Preface. Further, this principle should not be identified with the literary unit principle alone (a common misconception), but refers to the two interrelated principles of authorship and the literary unit. That Hyde "formulated" these principles can be defended only if we permit Pettee a certain latitude in her use of language. Included is an English translation of Hyde's Preface to the Reader.

Interpretation as oral communication

Oral interpretation is a communicative configuration in which no single element can be over‐stressed nor any one neglected. Presently, the emphasis in the theory of oral interpretation appears to center on a scheme of analysis based on the “new”; criticism. In this concern with analysis, we must not overlook the place and function of the vocal‐physical elements in the total process of interpretation as oral communication.     

Comic Books for Grown-ups:

Comic books, for decades aimed at children and teenagers, are increasingly being written and drawn for an older and more sophisticated audience. Like European and Japanese prototypes, these new-wave comic books may appear in magazine or in quality-paperback format, often called "graphic novels." While many of the new comics present slicker, sexier versions of familiar he-man fantasies, others are produced by independent artists who use the form to tackle serious personal and contemporary themes. This intriguing new world of adult comics is generally not accessible through standard reference sources; this article offers a personal overview of the field, and some suggestions for the art or reference librarian interested in starting a collection.

Interpretation and the Role of the Viewer in Museums of Modern and Contemporary Art

Abstract What does the term “interpretation” mean when it's encountered in museums of modern and contemporary art — and is something missing? Studies conducted by the Phillips Collection in Washington, D.C., the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis, and the University of Leicester in England reveal that visitors want more information about art. In this article, interviews with the directors of the Phillips and the Walker (as well as other museum professionals and academics) examine interpretative practices today and suggest plans for tomorrow. When preparing future interpretive materials, the author advocates that museums expose visitors to the idea that they make their own meaning when viewing art.     

Measures of greatness: A Lotkaian approach to literary authors using OCLC WorldCat

This study examines the productivity, eminence, and impact of literary authors using Lotka's law, a bibliometric approach developed for studying the published output of scientists. Data on literary authors were drawn from two recent surveys that identified and ranked authors who had made the greatest contributions to world literature. Data on the number of records of works by and about selected authors were drawn from OCLC WorldCat in 2007 and 2014. Findings show that the distribution of literary authors followed a pattern consistent with Lotka's law and show that these studies enable one to empirically test subjective rankings of eminent authors. Future examination of distribution of author productivity might include studies based on language, location, and culture.
