Web 3.0: Implications for Online Learning

The impact of Web 3.0, also known as the Semantic Web, on online learning is yet to be determined as the Semantic Web and its technologies continue to develop. Online instructors must have a rudimentary understanding of Web 3.0 to prepare for the next phase of online learning. This paper provides an understandable definition of the Semantic Web and its terminology, and then explores possible implications of Web 3.0 on online learning. The foundation of the Semantic Web is data integration. By using metadata, “display only” data is converted to meaningful information which can be located, evaluated, and delivered by software agents. Web 3.0 technologies will assist online instructors in the areas of course development, learner support, assessment, and record keeping. Online students will benefit from learning personalization and knowledge construction powered by the Semantic Web.     

英语语法命题规律对语法教学的启示——以英语专业四级考试为例

通过对近8年英语专业四级考试语法试题的统计分析,归纳出英语专业四级考试命题以时态、各类从句、非谓语动词用法为主,其他考点均匀分布。结合学生的错题情况发现学生的薄弱环节表现在对语法规则不熟悉,词汇量不够,语法术语和句子成分分析不了解等方面。教师在具体教学实践中,既要帮助学生掌握语法规则,扩大学生的词汇量,知晓识记语法专业术语,加强句子成分分析能力;也要帮助学生学会运用规则来指导语言实践活动,切实有效地促进学生英语综合应用能力的全面提高,培养出合格的高级应用型英语人才。     

Social Presence and Implications for Designing Online Learning Communities

With the rapid global proliferation of the Internet and telecommunication networks , online education , one form of distance education is currently becoming the fastest growing trend of domestic and international education. A major challenge to designing online learning is the development of appropriate means to facilitate the social environment that is critical for higher order learning in many disciplines. In many online learning designs, the majority of resources are channeled to web interface design and technology, while little or no resources are devoted to facilitating the teaching and learning process, the negotiation of meaning and the validation of knowledge among peers and instructors that depends on a conducive socio-cultural environment and adequate learner support.

Culturally Responsive Pedagogy and Online Learning: Implications for the Globalized Community College

Implicit in the open-door mission of the community college is the mandate that every learning experience should offer full equity and inclusion for all learners, including those of diverse cultural backgrounds. This mission is paramount, given the cultural diversity represented among learners served by the globalized community college. This paper presents a cross-section of research, practice, and discourse focused on expanding our knowledge and understanding of the diverse learning needs of community college learners. The relevance of the literature to the planning, design, and implementation of distance-learning is discussed. In the end, the authors offer distance-learning instructional strategies that may accommodate the unique needs of Hispanic/Latino learners. Implications for community college educators are discussed.

Medical Assistance in Dying: Implications for Canadian Classrooms and the Academy

The recent passing of legislation decriminalizing medically assisted suicide was a landmark in Canadian history. Since the law’s passage, an average of four Canadians per day have chosen to die using medical assistance. With Canadians embracing this option of death, we argue that there will be moments in Canadian schools when this topic will be brought into the classrooms. In this paper, we outline how children view death both emotionally and conceptually, as well as how teachers can discuss death in their classrooms. The purpose is to provide a brief explanation of the law, an expiation of how children view death, and a framework for how teachers may be prepared to broach the topic when raised in their classrooms.

Challenges for Graduate Writers

The ability to write effectively is becoming increasingly important, and instruction in writing is thus assuming an increasingly role in second language education, particularly the relationship between composition studies and second language studies has come to attract significant attention. The purpose of this paper is to discuss issues on academic writing confronted by student writers at graduate level. The conclusion of this paper will present some possible solutions to these problems.     

Literacy Engagement Through Online and Offline Communities Outside School: English Language Learners' Development as Readers and Writers

How do second-language learners become successful readers and writers? This article examines the importance of social networks to English language learners' reading and writing development. It describes different family, peer, and virtual social networks that ELLs can utilize to engage in online and offline reading and writing (especially related to youth popular culture, such as fan fiction) outside school. The article highlights the importance of fostering a participatory culture in classrooms and schools to help ELLs form communities of learners and supporters and facilitate their second-language literacy development.

在疫情爆发与学习者个性化需求日益多元化的全球化背景下,传统的学校教育被越来越多的在线资源所替代,而我国目前的在线教育仍然存在着学生自主学习意愿薄弱、自主学习策略欠缺以及自主学习能力不足等诸多问题.学校与教师对于学生也缺乏除传递知识以外的培养与教育.成立于2006年的斯坦福在线高中是一所全日制在线中学,即学生全部在线上便可以完成高中学业并取得毕业证书,其实践过程中的诸多举措与经验精准地回应了在线学习的问题与诉求.在线中学可以成为全日制教育的另一种可能吗?如何营造在线的学校氛围以促进学生自主学习?本文以自主学习理论考察斯坦福在线高中促进学生自主学习的举措并试图阐明它对我国未来构建在线中学的启示.

Game-Based Learning in Virtual Worlds: A Multiuser Online Game for Medical Undergraduate Radiology Education within Second Life

Game-based learning can have a positive impact on medical education, and virtual worlds have great potential for supporting immersive online games. It is necessary to reinforce current medical students' knowledge about radiological anatomy and radiological signs. To meet this need, the objectives of this study were: to design a competition-based game in the virtual world, Second Life and to analyze the students' perceptions of Second Life and the game, as well as to analyze the medium-term retention of knowledge and the potential impact on the final grades. Ninety out of 197 (45.6%) third-year medical students voluntarily participated in an online game based on self-guided presentations and multiple-choice tests over six 6-day stages. Participants and non-participants were invited to perform an evaluation questionnaire about the experience and a post-exposure knowledge test. Participants rated the experience with mean scores equal to or higher than 8.1 on a 10-point scale, highlighting the professor (9.5 ± 1.1; mean ± SD) and the virtual environment (8.9 ± 1.1). Participants had better results in the post-exposure test than non-participants (59.0 ± 13.5 versus 45.3 ± 11.5; P < 0.001) and a lower percentage of answers left blank (6.7 ± 8.4 versus 13.1 ± 12.9; P = 0.014). Competitive game-based learning within Second Life is an effective and well-accepted means of teaching core radiological anatomy and radiological signs content to medical students. The higher medium-term outcomes obtained by participants may indicate effective learning with the game. Additionally, valuable positive perceptions about the game, the educational contents, and the potential benefit for their education were discovered among non-participants.

西欧国家医学教育制度和医生培养体系的研究与借鉴

对英、法、德等西欧国家医生培养体系特征进行研究和分析,发现西欧主要国家医学教育制度和医生培养体系在医学学位和医师准入的关系、院校教育和毕业后教育的衔接等方面,都和北美国家存在一定差异,对我国构建和实践“5+3”临床医学人才模式具有重要的参考和借鉴价值。
