This paper describes a pedagogical process used in an introductory criminal justice class to challenge typical university students' preconceptions and beliefs about the personal and neighborhood factors that most often characterize crime and criminals. Students were asked to respond to the similarities and differences between themselves and the characters in Alex Kotlowitz's (1991) book There Are No Children Here. They also were asked to relate the book conceptually to issues discussed in the classroom. In contrast to their earlier expressions of ideological narrowness, the students' response papers reflected consistent themes of injustice, powerlessness, unfair police or court practices, and racism. The students were able to stop distancing themselves from “criminals” and to examine how social disorganization and social institutions shape individuals' hopes and opportunities.  相似文献

Many colleges and universities offer forensic science courses ranging from a single introductory class to majors. Previous research has not addressed how valuable these courses are to undergraduate criminal justice students who aspire to enter the law enforcement field. A random sample of law enforcement agencies in Michigan were surveyed. Seventy-eight percent of respondents agreed that knowledge of forensic science was important and 46% preferred that applicants have a forensic science background prior to hiring. The knowledge areas deemed most important were interviewing techniques, crime scene documentation, evidence collection, and latent fingerprint analysis.  相似文献

《沧浪诗话》今传"通行本"与"玉屑本"两种版本,其中《诗辩》的文本顺序存在较大差异。文章在综述已有研究成果的基础上,进一步就《诗辩》的文本顺序问题提出四点补论:其一,《沧浪诗话》原非"诗话体"著作,《诗辩》当为"辩"体论说文,而《诗人玉屑》作为诗话著作摘录《诗辩》,并不承担保存其原貌的责任;其二,若依"玉屑本",则《诗辩》开篇即蹈袭北宋《潜溪诗眼》旧话;其三,从两个"识"字可以看出被"玉屑本"腰斩为两段的文字原本存在紧密的逻辑承接关系,且"通行本"在行文脉络上更加明晰;其四,论法论品相关文字或为"通行本"编校者据"玉屑本"补入,是以此两段文字依"玉屑本"当更为合理。  相似文献

Without the explanatory power of general theoretical principles, criminal justice educators are limited to subjectively describing the structure and function of our systems of criminal justice rather than explaining why these systems behave the way they do. Because of this, criminal justice lacks integrity as a legitimate academic discipline that seeks to meet the objectives of a liberal arts education. This paper explores the establishment of ideology as a first principle of criminal justice, derived from political philosophy and sociological theory. We examine ways to build upon this principle as a means of teaching criminal justice within the guise of the liberal arts tradition by guiding students toward a deeper understanding of the nature of our criminal justice systems and their place in larger society.  相似文献

Abstract

Washday at the Pā (‘pā’ is used colloquially by Pākehā to refer to a Māori settlement) is the title of an old schoolbook, a picture reading book for younger schoolchildren, which was produced in 1964 by the state education system in Aotearoa-New Zealand in 1964, written and photographed by Ans Westra, who later became one of the most famous photographers in the country. Washday at the Pā provoked a national debate when the Minister of Education acceded to protests by the Māori Womens Welfare League against its use in classrooms by withdrawing it completely, and the story of this controversy has remained alive in national consciousness ever since. This research brings Māori feminist philosophy to the Washday debate: I take up Mana Wahine theory as a useful lens on the controversy, understood as an event about, with and for women, in the history of Māori education. The purpose of this article is to reread, using Mana Wahine theory, existing arguments about the book’s withdrawal, and to propose an original resolution of the question at the centre of debate: should the book have been withdrawn from schools, or not?  相似文献

Brian Alderson has been a friend of CLE since its inception, and, indeed, is to be found in its first number making some testy remarks at the first of the famous Exeter Conferences where the journal originated. At that time he was a lecturer in Children's Literature at the Polytechnic of North London—a position which he had reached after a circuitous journey beginning in the London book trade. As well as lecturing in both Europe and America, Brian Alderson has engaged in various activities which relate to children's literature: founding the Children's Books History Society and editing texts of historical interest; storytelling and translating the tales of the Brothers Grimm and Hans Christian Andersen; mounting and cataloguing exhibitions, especially on book illustration; and for many years he has been the Children's Books Editor ofThe Times. Most recently, Brian Alderson has been working on a two-volume study of the U.S. illustrator Ezra Jack Keats, which is being published in the U.S.A. by The Pelican Press of Gretna, Louisiana and has just completed editing Kingsley'sThe Water-Babies.  相似文献

More criminal justice students are interested in a career in physical evidence collection. Oftentimes faculty have limited knowledge of the subject, which undermines their efforts to advise students on how to secure such a position. Additionally, because crime scene technicians have traditionally learned the position through “on-the-job” training, few academic programs exist designed to provide this education and training. This paper provides an overview of the development of a college-level degree program that will prepare individuals for careers as crime scene technicians and gives faculty a basis for advising students about this career option.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

In this article, the authors, based on a process developed in the context of US higher education, demonstrate a model for undergraduate student research skill development that involves academic staff writing collaborative book reviews with undergraduate students and librarians, especially librarians that are also academic staff with relevant content expertise. This model can and should be modified to fit various disciplinary contexts and academic circumstances, potentially around the world. The authors acknowledge that this model will be more useful for academic staff in the social sciences and humanities as compared to the so-called hard or natural sciences. The authors reimagine book reviews based on the notion of ‘scholarship as conversation’ in library science. As evidence, the authors describe the origins of this unique collaborative process and document the impact of academic staff, librarians, and undergraduate students partnering to increase the academic rigor of book reviews. Contributing to scholarship at the intersection of research skill development, information literacy, and embedded librarianship, this article identifies a strategic opportunity for collaboration that makes writing reviews more engaging and educationally productive for students, academic staff, and librarians.  相似文献

Abstract

Researchers have argued that media exposure involving criminal justice can influence perceptions of police, but empirical research is decidedly mixed. Additionally, some scholars argue that media effects depend on audience characteristics. However, the moderating role of academic major remains unexplored. Using a laboratory-style randomized experiment (N?=?270), the current study examines the impact of media exposure that contains conflicting images of the police on perceptions of police and if this effect varies depending on academic majors by performing a series of paired t-tests, independent-samples t-tests, and a mixed between-within subjects analysis of variance. Findings show that exposure to mixed images of the police dampens confidence in the police, but this effect is pronounced among non-CJ majors compared to CJ majors. Expanding our knowledge base in differential media effects between CJ majors and non-CJ majors can offer useful insights into future CJ curricula.  相似文献

Historically, much of the teaching-learning transactions in criminal justice classrooms have been teacher-centered. Teacher-centered approaches are rooted in the behavioral and cognitive theories of education. Andragogy, a philosophical orientation for adult education, receives little attention in the criminal justice literature. Yet the tenets of andragogy form an organizing framework that is consistent with many contemporary and evolving criminal justice practices. This paper defines andragogy and presents an “andragogical guide,” which may be useful for criminal justice educators who desire to experiment with innovative approaches to foster a more effective teaching-learning transaction.  相似文献

Abstract

Key to guaranteeing the fundamental human rights of freedom of expression and information is the development of media competence, particularly in schools. Training teachers in the area of media competence is particularly important for developing these skills in the broader citizenry. In order to provide educators and educational policymakers with a useful diagnostic tool, we have designed a self-perception questionnaire. The questionnaire was applied to a sample of Peruvian education students (N = 501). On the one hand, the results confirm the construct’s coherence, validity and instrumental reliability. On the other hand, they allow us to propose a theoretically based update to the way in which this construct is interpreted and applied, confirming the multidimensionality of media competence. Finally, we use this empirical evidence to discuss the integral, transversal and ecological status of media competence.  相似文献
