This study examined physical violence portrayed in a sample of televised professional wrestling. Trained research assistants coded the frequency of violent interactions, perpetrator characteristics, and contextual features (extent of violence, use of weapons, consequence of violence, reasons for violence, and reward for violence). Wrestling was compared with a sample of prime-time television from the National Television Violence Study (Smith, Nathanson, &; Wilson, 2002). Findings show that the extent of violence in wrestling is significantly greater than other prime-time genres and that wrestling more often portrays violence as justified, likely to go unpunished, and unlikely to produce extreme harm. Overall, wrestling presented violence in amounts and contexts linked with increased risk of harm to viewers.

One rhetorical strategy that has been neglected as an object of study over the years is the technique of mystification. The mystifier conceals his own motives and investments through the use of words and ideas that are ambiguous, but prestigious and acceptable. This rhetorical ploy is perhaps most evident when the powerful seek to justify their status to the weak.

Some groups of subjects who were high on orientation, and some low, engaged in problem‐solving discussion. Three subjects from each group had endorsed the most liberal position of the problem, three the most conservative. High orientation groups came closest to achieving consensus after discussion. Individual's self‐perception of orientation was also investigated.

This study found that the auditors with initially extreme attitudes were affected differently by a speaker's evidence than were those with initially neutral attitudes and suggests that the role which evidence plays in persuasion may be related to the particular “game” a communicator plays with his audience.
