SUMMARY

This article outlines some of the author's criteria for good web sites (browser compatibility, stability, loading time, organization, legibility, use of plug-ins and multimedia applications, audience, and number and quality of digital surrogates), and discusses selected legal studies websites in terms of their usefulness as public service tools.     

Instability of Iron Sulfides on Recently Excavated Artifacts

Summary

The composition and nature of the different sulfides which can occur on underground iron are reviewed with reference to the literature, together with the various corrosion reactions. The type of pyrites on fossils and minerals is also included. The experimental work involved goethites and magnetites reacting with damp hydrogen sulfide gas to give mackinawite, pyrite and/or greigite. These can react exothermically and may be pyrophoric. Methods to increase stability and reduce the danger of pyrophoric oxidation are discussed.     

The Impact of Productivity and Quality of CJK Cataloging–A Brief Comparison Between CJK 2nd Edition and 3rd Edition

ABSTRACT

This report compares the features of the 2nd and 3rd editions of OCLC's CJK cataloging as implemented at the Chicago Public Library. The 3rd edition is faster for cataloging than the 2nd edition. Alternatively, the 2nd edition has other benefits including stability. Perspectives such as the quality of CJK cataloging between the 2nd and the 3rd edition are discussed also.     

Marine Aerosol Weathering of Mediterranean Calcarenite Stone: Durability of Ethyl Silicate,Nano Ca(OH)2, Nano SiO2, and Nanostructured Consolidating Products

ABSTRACT

Calcarenite stone samples from a historic building (Bizerte, Tunisia) were collected and treated under different environmental conditions with several consolidating products: alkoxysilane (ethyl silicate), a surfactant-templated novel sol–gel, Ca(OH)₂, and SiO₂ nanoparticles. These were subjected to marine aerosol accelerated aging cycles and studied by several non-destructive tests and techniques to assess the stability of the products. Results show that weathering caused by salt crystallization is not inhibited but it is slowed down due to the enhancement of superficial mechanical properties (surface cohesion and micro-hardness) achieved after one month of treatments application. A high or low relative humidity of the consolidation environment significantly affects the final mechanical and aesthetical physical properties and therefore conditions the durability of the treated substrates, even producing higher damage than observed in the blank specimens, depending on the product.     

Original and reformulated BEVA® 371: Composition and assessment as a consolidant for painted surfaces

Abstract

Many natural and synthetic products have been used for the consolidation of paint layers, but none have been thoroughly tested for this application. This is apparent for most of the synthetic and semi-synthetic adhesives for conservation, many of which are pure polymer resins and dispersions adapted from other industries. They were not specifically formulated with the appropriate properties for conservation, nor do they take advantage of some of the more recent developments in adhesive technology. BEVA^® 371 is unique among adhesives used for consolidation treatments, as it is a multi-component mixture and was designed specifically for the conservation field using the best technology available at the time. However, the main focus of the research was its application as a lining adhesive. Thus, optical properties and stability, specifically color stability, were not thoroughly evaluated even though some lining applications that were first recommended could have benefited from this type of investigation. This paper will discuss the development of BEVA^® 371, the chemistry, and roles of each component, and address a practical concern about the tack behavior of its replacement formulation, BEVA^® 371b.

The Reliability and Temporal Stability of Self-reported Media Exposure: A Meta-analysis

ABSTRACT

The measurement of media exposure is essential to not only traditional audience research, but also media effects research which relies on accurate estimates of media exposure. Even in the age of digital trace data and passive audience measurement, the workhorse of basically all communication research is self-report data. This article presents a meta-analysis of the reliability and temporal stability of media exposure self-reports in 33 panel studies. Results from a Bayesian multilevel analysis show that self-reported media exposure was moderately reliable (0.69, 90% HDI: 0.65, 0.72) and highly stable (0.90, 90% HDI: 0.88, 0.92). In line with previous studies, the reliability of media exposure measures was higher in adult samples (0.72, 90% HDI: 0.69, 0.76) compared to adolescents (0.60, 90% HDI: 0.53, 0.66). Rank-order stability of media exposure was comparable in adult (0.91, 90% HDI: 0.89, 0.93) and adolescent samples (0.85, 90% HDI: 0.81, 0.90). Moderation analyses showed that self-reported exposure to specific outlets was more reliable than general media use in adult samples. Media-specific differences in reliability were only found in adolescent samples. Overall, moderate reliability in combination with high temporal stability poses important challenges for scholars investigating causes and consequences of media exposure.

Durability of Chinese Repair Bamboo Papers under Artificial Aging Conditions

ABSTRACT

To study the life expectancy and difference in aging resistance properties of different modern repair bamboo papers, hydrothermal/dry-heat ageing experiments on repair bamboo paper samples were conducted. The mechanical strength (tensile strength and folding endurance) of different papers during the ageing process were analyzed. Furthermore, the chemical properties (degree of polymerization and pH) of the samples were tested to search for the immanent cause of paper ageing. The results indicated that the ageing resistance ability and durability of modern repair paper are strongly related to their production process, which corresponds with the initial properties of the paper. Mechanical pulp had a low degradation resistance, which was further exacerbated by the chemical bleaching process. In the long run, traditional handmade papers with solar bleaching processes will have longer-term stability and durability.
