This report focuses on two antecedent variables, dogmatism and need for social approval of the receivers. The study tested whether either antecedent variable would affect the relationship between message strategy and resistance to persuasion.

Using a Burkeian critical method, this paper shows that throughout Oration. XII, Against Eratosthenes, Lysias utilizes strategies of substantive, dramatistic, and cooperative identification in order to create a dramatic situation in which redemption can occur and establish Eratosthenes as a ritual victim for the process of redemption.     

The function or debate

Classical debate involves orderliness and freedom of speech. There are debates in Homer, the earliest surviving Greek author. The debates in Thucydides, Demosthenes, and the reported Roman debates in the handbook of Seneca the Elder turn upon issues of freedom of speech which are not without relevance for our time; even in a time of absolutism Roman orators kept the spark of freedom alive.     

Social media in public health care: Impact domain propositions

This paper investigates the impacts of social media use in Danish public health care with respect to capabilities, interactions, orientations, and value distribution. Taking an exploratory approach, the paper draws on an array of quantitative and qualitative data, and puts forward four propositions: social media transform the access to health-related information for patients and general practitioners, the uptake of social media can be a cost driver rather than a cost saver, social media provide empowerment to patients, and the uptake of social media is hindered by legal and privacy concerns.

Finding and tracking subjects within an ongoing debate

This paper describes a new algorithm for finding and tracking different subjects within an ongoing debate. The algorithm finds blocks of co-occurring terms, representing subjects, including blocks for which the term co-occurrence pattern forms a ring topology. We used short online debate forum data and longer summary bulletins to assess the extent to which the algorithm could correctly detect subjects, according to the judgements of human evaluators. The results show that it could normally detect subject-shifting and track different subjects over time in online debate forums and with adjustments could find subjects in bulletins, but could not track the subjects in the bulletins because the interlinking between subjects was too dense in the longer documents.

元数据的互操作是分布式信息环境下信息发现的核心技术.文章在元数据的结构模型基础上,讨论了元数据互操作的层次、原型和语义语法的一致性.文章认为,语义的一致性和语法的统一性是元数据互操作发展的趋势,由于元数据抽象模型将元数据的语义语法描述置于同一个框架下,基于抽象模型的元数据互操作可能是一个值得探索的领域.

谁来办报,为谁办报,怎么办报是世界新闻(报刊)发展上莫可遁避的永恒主题与实践话语。从办报目的层面上讲,回应此主题的价值取向基本存在两种面向:精英(政党、官员、商人、文人、专家)办报与群众办报。从历史发展进路看,群众办报是对精英办报缺陷的一种弥补与纠偏。本文首先追溯了马克思主义党报理论体系中群众办报的内涵变迁、逻辑缘起,继而分析了当下群众办报的现实困局,最后尝试性寻绎其价值归宿,认为呵护公民权利、促进社会公正是群众办报理性萦怀的极致关怀。

Techno-optimism and policy-pessimism in the public sector big data debate

Despite great potential, high hopes and big promises, the actual impact of big data on the public sector is not always as transformative as the literature would suggest. In this paper, we ascribe this predicament to an overly strong emphasis the current literature places on technical-rational factors at the expense of political decision-making factors. We express these two different emphases as two archetypical narratives and use those to illustrate that some political decision-making factors should be taken seriously by critiquing some of the core ‘techno-optimist’ tenets from a more ‘policy-pessimist’ angle. In the conclusion we have these two narratives meet ‘eye-to-eye’, facilitating a more systematized interrogation of big data promises and shortcomings in further research, paying appropriate attention to both technical-rational and political decision-making factors. We finish by offering a realist rejoinder of these two narratives, allowing for more context-specific scrutiny and balancing both technical-rational and political decision-making concerns, resulting in more realistic expectations about using big data for policymaking in practice.
