<正>张元济生于1867年,死于1959年,一生历经晚清、民国和中华人民共和国诸历史时期,几乎与中国近现代史相始终。他没有旗号,没有宣言,没有太多的理论,甚至也不屑于对自己的选择做任何堂皇的解释,但他开明、稳健、实干、执着而且富于识见,数十年如一日把商务印书馆从一个简陋的小印刷作坊办成全国最大的出版机构和东方文化的中心机关。在这个过程中,他本人亦从前清翰林转变为现代中国首屈一指的出版家,成为那个动荡岁月里有所建树的典型,他的名字标志着中国现代出版史上的一个时代。

(Residual) Public Music Radio in the Streaming Era: Listening for Diversity and Frequency on CBC Music

The aim of this article is to assess whether and how the CBC’s music radio programming reflects the corporation’s mandate of showcasing a diversity of music and culture. I argue that a program logic that privileges an international corporate music industry strategy persists (particularly during the peak morning and afternoon drive time programs) and limits the capacity for public radio to imagine and project alternative musical trajectories. My aspiration is to imagine CBC Music’s over-the-air radio as a residual broadcast service, one that presents novel opportunities at a time when digital and online streaming music is dominant.     

Queens for a Day: Queer Eye for the Straight Guy and the Neoliberal Project

This paper moves beyond a conventional critique of gay stereotyping on Bravo's popular makeover show Queer Eye for the Straight Guy to consider how the show puts gay cultural expertise to work to reform a heterosexual masculinity that is compatible with the neoliberal moment. At issue are the newly public acknowledgement of gay taste and consumer expertise; the “crisis of masculinity” that requires that heterosexual men must now attend to their relationships, image, and domestic habitus; and the remaking of the straight guy as not only an improved romantic partner—the metrosexual—but a more flexible, employable worker. The author concludes by considering how camp deconstructs some of Queer Eye's most heteronormative aims, even while leaving its class and consumption rationales intact.
