Gerald Caplan: A Tribute to the Originator of Mental Health Consultation

Gerald Caplan (1917–2008), world-renowned child and community psychiatrist, was the originator of the modern practice of mental health consultation. In addition to consultation, Caplan developed and refined many conceptual models and methods for practice for use in community mental health, psychology, and education. This tribute article focuses on his career and contributions to the field of consultation and offers insights into his approach to mental health consultation.     

Teaching Consultation for Mental Health and Educational Settings

A course in consultation is increasingly becoming part of the required graduate curriculum of counseling psychologists/counselors who are training for employment in mental health and educational settings. It seems that most textbooks on consultation are devoted to theory and practice, and most journal articles on the topic focus on research outcomes. There is also a paucity of literature regarding practices in methods of teaching consultants for mental health and educational settings. This article outlines a practical model for teaching consultation skills that includes didactic presentations, demonstrations, and simulation experiences.     

Meeting the Challenges of the Future: Integrating Public Health and Public Education for Mental Health Promotion

The 2002 Future of School Psychology Conference called for reform of current models of professional school psychology, including a paradigm shift toward a public health model of practice. This article explores the role of school psychologists in efforts to achieve an integrated public health and public education model for delivering comprehensive school-based mental health services. Building on expertise as psychological and educational consultants, school psychooogists can play a unique role in facilitating the necessary systemic reform and capacity building for comprehensive mental health service delivery. This revised role requires redefining school-based consultation to include consultation for capacity building, and rethinking professional preparation to ensure expertise in public health models, inter-agency and interdisciplinary collaboration, participatory action research, and comprehensive service delivery.     

构建大学生心理健康教育与咨询网络化平台

开展高校大学生心理健康教育与咨询,是当前大学生思想政治工作的一项重要任务。本文从落实科学发展观,坚持以人为本的高度出发,提出了构建高校大学生心理健康教育与咨询网络化平台的构想,阐述了大学生心理健康教育与咨询网络化平台的特点与优势,给出了构建该网络化平台的具体思路。     

关于大学生心理健康状况的调查研究

为了解当今大学生的心理健康状况,运用症状自评量表（SCL-90）对浙江省内四个地区13所高校2010名在校大学生开展问卷调查,回收有效问卷1432份。通过数据的汇总与统计、比较,得出大学生的总体心理健康水平数据,为进一步了解大学生心理健康状况与更好的开展大学生心理健康辅导、教育提供依据。     

高师开设"教育辅导"课程的思考

心理健康目标的实现只有学校配备心理专家才能完成 ,依靠学校全体教师进行心育只能流于形式 ;教育辅导是社会发展对学校教育的必然要求 ,它能有效地实现心理健康的部分目标 ;教育辅导的内容与学校教育内容有较强的通融性、理解性 ,师范教育具有开设教育辅导课程必要性与可能性。     

The road to self‐efficacy: a discussion of generic training in mental health competencies for educational professionals

This discussion aims to consider the value of training educational professionals in mental health competencies. Primary Mental Health Workers working in the Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service have traditionally used a consultation model when working with schools. In this article I consider moving the emphasis away from consultancy work, instead putting training at the cornerstone of improving mental health in schools. I believe that local practices using consultation can create a ‘dependency’ culture, inhibiting the development of self‐efficacy in those involved in pastoral care in educational settings. Instead, an alternative method of improving confidence and self‐efficacy amongst educational practitioners is by delivering a comprehensive training course, which aims to provide a range of competencies in mental health. Training, which provides skills in low‐level therapeutic approaches for pupils and students, in conjunction with a broad understanding of mental illness and mental health issues, could be a highly effective method of responding to the maxim ‘mental health is everyone’s business’.     

试论网络在高职大学生心理健康教育与咨询工作中的作用——以十堰职业技术学院“心雨桥”网站为例

对于当代大学生,网络成为他们学习生活不可或缺的重要工具。在激烈的竞争中,高职大学生成为心理问题的多发群体。因此,在高职生心理健康教育与咨询工作中,充分发挥网络的作用具有重要意义。本文以十堰职业技术学院＂心雨桥＂心理网站为例,探讨网络在高职大学生心理健康教育与咨询工作中的作用、实现方式及成效。     

当前中学生心理辅导面临的问题及对策

中学生的心理健康问题既是当前教育界的一个热点，也是一个难点，由此所引发的社会问题引起了各方的广泛关注。本文列举了当前中学生心理问题的种种表现，分析了学校开展学生心理咨询所面临的困难，并提出了解决这一问题的建议。     

Systematic Review of Early Childhood Mental Health Consultation: Implications for Improving Preschool Discipline Disproportionality

ABSTRACT

Early childhood mental health consultation (ECMHC) is a framework that continues to expand as students’ social-emotional needs emerge at younger ages. The present systematic review examines the extant literature surrounding the use of ECMHC and behavioral consultation in addressing mental health concerns and challenging behaviors in preschool students. Findings associated with this systematic review suggest that ECMHC could be a promising practice for targeting internalizing and externalizing behavioral concerns in prekindergarten students across a variety of settings. However, more research is needed in the areas of mental health/behavioral consultation and disciplinary disproportionality, as well as on the impact of such practices on preschool children of color. Implications for school psychologists are discussed, as are disciplinary practices when providing ECMHC and behavioral consultation services with students of diverse racial, ethnic, and cultural backgrounds.     

Types of Mental Health Consultation

Mental health consultation is defined and differentiated from other forms of professional activity in the community mental health field. The four main types of mental health consultation are discussed and one, 'consultee-centered case consultation' is described in some detail, to illustrate the basic principles of method and technique.     

Evaluation of Mental Health Consultation in Child Care Centers

Mental health professionals have speculated that their consultation services should improve the overall quality of a child care center, but few research studies have shown this effect in child care settings. In the present study, mental health consultation services were provided by four agencies to 25 urban child care centers to enhance children's emotional lives and social abilities, and to strengthen child care center staff's capacity to work with children who have difficult behaviors. A one-year evaluation was conducted to assess the impact of the mental health services on the teachers and child care centers using observational measures, director- and teacher-completed questionnaires, and qualitative focus group data. Centers with more than one year of consultation showed increases in overall quality, teachers' self-efficacy, and teachers' competence. In addition, staff expressed satisfaction with the mental health consultation services provided. Implications of findings and suggestions for future interventions are discussed.     

工科类高职院校大学生期望的心理辅导研究

当前高校中对大学生的心理健康教育已经给予了足够的重视,心理辅导对大学生的健康成长的重要性也得到了教育工作者的共识。通过调查发现,工科类高职院校大学生最希望通过学校心理辅导,达到提升心理素质、适应社会竞争的效果;学生更趋向于选择上心理健康课和咨询室的心理辅导方式;学生期望中理想的心理辅导人员不但要具备扎实的专业技能,更需要有良好的职业道德和亲和力。这对当前工科类高职院校的心理辅导工作提出了新的要求。     

The Evidence Base for Mental Health Consultation in Early Childhood Settings: A Research Synthesis Addressing Children's Behavioral Outcomes

Research Findings: Early childhood mental health consultation aims to reduce problem behaviors and improve social skills in young children primarily through changes in the classroom environment and teacher practices. We conducted a systematic review of the literature and identified 14 rigorous studies that reported on child-level outcomes. These studies had at least one of the following characteristics: publication in a peer-reviewed journal, use of a randomized control trial design, or inclusion of a comparison group. Across these studies, there was variation in the approaches to consultation, qualifications of the consultants, and intensity of the services provided. Overall, early childhood mental health consultation services were consistently associated with reductions in teacher-reported externalizing behaviors. Findings related to reductions in internalizing behaviors were mixed. Teacher ratings of prosocial behaviors were improved in the majority of the studies that reported on this domain. Practice or Policy: This research synthesis underscores the importance of documenting the specific approaches to early childhood mental health consultation that are being implemented to allow for replication of effective models. Areas for future research improvement include increasing rigor through studies that contain independent assessments of children's behaviors, isolating key components of effective consultation, and identifying consultant qualifications and characteristics that lead to child behavior changes.
