The following essay provides an analysis of the rhetorical strategies employed by Leonora O'Reilly, a Progressive Era labor reformer. The essay argues that O'Reilly's use of enactment and empowerment are representative of a “feminine style” as defined by Campbell (1989) and extended by Dow and Tonn (1993). As a subject of analysis, O'Reilly's rhetoric provides an opportunity to examine the public voice of a working‐class female reformer.  相似文献

The current work investigated the extent to which children (N=171 6- to 8-year-olds) and adults (N = 94) view punishment as redemptive. In Study 1, children—but not adults—reported that “mean” individuals became “nicer” after one severe form of punishment (incarceration). Moreover, adults expected “nice” individuals’ moral character to worsen following punishment; however, we did not find that children expected such a change. Study 2 extended these findings by showing that children view “mean” individuals as becoming “nicer” following both severe (incarceration) and relatively minor (time-out) punishments, suggesting that the pattern of results from Study 1 generalizes across punishment types. Together, these studies indicate that children—but not adults—may view punishment as a vehicle for redemption.  相似文献

Matthew Arnold is a great Victorian poet and a leading social critic."Dover Beach"is one of Arnold's most famous poems. Critics differ widely on how to interpret Matthew Arnold's choice of"Sophocles"in it. Many critics argue that the introduction of the Greek author Sophocles in the second stanza strengthened the theme in a large degree by forming a contrast between the present and past. Some others think that Arnold chooses Sophocles because he appreciates Hellenism. But most of the critics attempt to discover a specific reference to Sophocles. In this article, the author is going to discuss why reasons mentioned above can not explain the role"Sophocles"played in improving the theme of"Dover Beach"and prove that"Sophocles"was used by Arnold, a pious Christian, to grieve for the collapse of faith.  相似文献

As one of the four great tragedies of Shakespeare, Macbeth is known for its complexity, not in plot, but in the reversals of the characters’fortune and mentality. This paper analyses how the blood signs, especially"bloody hands", signify the reversal of the character of Macbeth and Lady Macbeth as well as appealing the readers’emotion of fear and pity, thus enhancing the tragic effects of the play.  相似文献
