This study explored nontraditional college students' perspectives on their college education. Forty‐three undergraduate students with an average age of 38 years completed 60‐minute structured interviews. Qualitative research methodology based on grounded theory was used in data synthesis. Results identified the central concept of hopefulness, which interacted with 5 other themes: (a) motivation, (b) financial investment, (c) career development, (d) life transition, and (e) support systems. Implications for counseling practice and future research are discussed.  相似文献

学校教育教学的各个环节、活动、措施对学生的影响是无法区分的,也是无法割裂的,它们共同作用于学生。立足于学生,高校有必要把更多的注意力放在学生每天时间是如何安排的、他们学习什么、他们在哪学习、他们学到了什么等问题上。为此,高校需要从学生发展的视角,设计一体化的教育方案,构建大学生整体就读经历,更准确反映学生的学习成果。  相似文献

The prevalence of homeschooling in the United States is increasing. Yet little is known about how commonly used predictors of postsecondary academic performance (SAT, high school grade point average [HSGPA]) perform for homeschooled students. Postsecondary performance at 140 colleges and universities was analyzed comparing a sample of traditional students matched to a sample of 732 homeschooled students on four demographic variables, HSGPA, and SAT scores. The matched sample was drawn from 824,940 traditional students attending the same institutions as the homeschooled students, which permitted a very precise level of matching. This comparison did not show a difference in first‐year college GPA (FGPA) or retention between homeschooled and traditional students. SAT scores predicted FGPA and retention equally well for both groups, but HSGPA was a weaker predictor for the homeschooled group. These results suggest that, among college students, those who were homeschooled perform similarly to traditionally educated students matched on demographics and academic preparedness, but there are practical implications for college admissions in the use of HSGPA versus standardized test scores for homeschooled students.  相似文献

大学生课堂体验是衡量高等学校教学质量的重要维度.文章以大学生参与理论以及大学生学习结构模型等相关理论为依据,从教师教学、同伴关系、课业负担、学习自由度四个维度对大学生课堂体验进行划分,并设计开展大学生课堂体验调查,分析课堂体验对学习成果包括学习成绩、总体满意度、总体学习收获的影响.研究结果显示,我国大学生课堂体验对学习成果有显著影响.同伴关系是影响大学生发展与成长的重要因素,教师教学是影响总体学习收获的重要指标,适度的学习自由度和课业负担是学生取得学习成果的需要.基于此,高校应全面评价、重新审视大学课堂,重视大学生的课堂体验,进一步深化高校教学改革,充分发挥专业教师的引领作用,构筑多样化的学生学习团队,发挥同伴互助教育的最大效应.  相似文献

Abstract

Two groups of undergraduate students participating in a field experience as part of a teacher education program were compared in regard to their (a) development of clarity skills, (b) pedagogical reasoning and actions, and (c) attitudes toward several aspects of the field experience. The experimental group was trained in peer coaching techniques, in which teams of preservice teachers were assigned to the same classrooms to provide observation and feedback to each other. The control group experienced traditional university supervision. Results showed statistically significant differences in favor of the experimental condition on 8 of 10 variables measured.  相似文献

Little has been written about the development of a system deliberately combining outreach, consultative, and treatment approaches to bulimia on college campuses. The purpose of this paper is to present a philosophy, implementation strategy, and examples of coordinated interventions that can occur on campuses to prevent, identify, and treat college students with bulimia. This study extended Dweck's model of achievement motivation to the collegiate level, and it is the first to apply this model to nontraditional students. We examined the relationship between goal orientations and academic performance in 262 undergraduate students grouped by nontraditional vs. traditional status. Although both groups rated themselves higher on learning goals than on performance goals, non-traditional students endorsed learning goals even more strongly than their traditional peers. Goal orientations were a better predictor of academic success than student status. Consistent with Dweck's model, a learning goal orientation was positively related to successful academic performance for both groups. The relationship between performance goals and academic success was less straightforward, but students who rated both goal orientations as relatively weak had the lowest cumulative GPAs. Traditional and nontraditional students differed on variables that were inversely related to academic performance. Less successful traditional students endorsed irrational beliefs (a possible index of learned helplessness), while less successful nontraditional students worked more hours at a paid job.  相似文献

This study uses a survey of undergraduate college students at two schools in the eastern United States to investigate their attitudes toward carrying concealed weapons on campus. We found that politically conservative white men who own guns are more likely to be in favor of qualified students and faculty carrying concealed weapons on campus than politically liberal non-whites and women who do not own guns. Neither academic major nor age had a significant effect on any of our dependent variables.  相似文献

问卷调查表明,当前大学生总体上对与人际交往相关的传统文化语句有着较高的知晓度、认同度和践行度。对大多数语句的知晓度高于认同度和践行度,表明大学生在"知行合一"方面有着较大提升空间。不同性别、年级、专业、生源以及独生子女与非独生子女大学生在知晓度、认同度与践行度上存在程度不同的差异。建议进一步重视和加强传统文化教育,以更好地发挥中华传统文化在促进大学生人际和谐以及校园和谐、社会和谐方面的作用。  相似文献

In response to a mail survey, 53 nontraditional undergraduates provided information about their reasons for reentering college, the likelihood of using services for nontraditional students, and sources of social support. Participants reported career, self‐improvement, and family issues as primary reasons for reentry. They reported they would be likely or very likely to use campus services, especially career counseling. More than 60% reported strong social support from family and friends.  相似文献
