Giant pandas may not be in as much danger of extinction as feared with a new British-Chinese study finding there could be twice as many living in the wild as previously thought, scientists said on June 19. "This finding indicates that the species may have a significantly better chance of long-term viability (生存能力) than recently anticipated, and that this beautiful animal may have a brighter future," the scientists said in a statement. Until now scientists thought there were about 1,590 giant pandas living in reserves in the mountains of China. But scientists from Britain's Cardiff University and the Chinese Academy of Sciences now think there could be as many as 3,000 there after a survey using a new method to profile DNA from panda faces revealed 相似文献

One of the qualities that most people admire in others is the willingness to admil one‘s mistakes. It is extremely hard sometimes to say a simple thing like“I was wrong about that” ,and it is even harder to say, “I was wrong, and you were right about that. ”Perhaps the reason we admire this. 相似文献

Amy and Susan had this thing where they kept forgetting. They would wake up in the morning and forget about the smell of a lake in the woods at dawn in the autumn. They would forget about being held by another human being. They would forget the feeling of getting really excited about something coming up, something big like Christmas, or something small like waiting for dinner to be served. 相似文献

(1)(2013年1月海淀区高三年级第一学期期末质量检查阅读A篇)Something roared like thunder. The earth shook a little and we heard the rat-a-tat-tat of gunfire."Father!"Hassan cried. We sprung to our feet and raced out of the living room."Father! What’s that sound?"Hassan screamed, his hands outstretched toward Ali.Ali wrapped his arms around us.A white light flashed and lit the sky in silver. It flashed again and was followed by rapid sharp sounds of gunfire."They’re hunting ducks,"Ali said in a hoarse voice."They hunt ducks at night, you know.Don’t be afraid." 相似文献

It is predicted that there will be 5 scientific breakthroughs in the 21st century. We'll know where we came from. Why does the universe exist? To put it another way, why is there something instead of nothing?Since the 1920s, scientists have known the universe is expanding, which means it must have started at a definite time in the past. They even have developed theories that give a detailed picture of the evolution of the universe from the time it was a fraction of a second old to the present. Over the next couple of decades, these theories will be refined by data from extraordinary powerful new telescope. We will have a better understanding of how matter behaves at the unfathomably high temperatures and pressures of the early universe. 相似文献

It was the Teachers' Day, would do for our English teacher last Wednesday. Before it came, we were thinking what we and what present we would give her on that day. Wu Juan said, "Let's give our teacher a surprise." "What surprise?" we asked. She went on, "Every day before the class, one of us will give a weather and news report. On that day, the reporter will give the English teacher a card and a bottle of pure drink water. Water is pure and clean, just like our love to our teacher. Water is also useful to the teacher. She talks a lot in class." "That's a good idea," we said happily. 相似文献

I’ve been saving money for a new guitar. It took me over a year, but now I have enough to buy the one I want.Nothside Music has a Pindari Super Twanger on sale this week and I'm going to buy one tomorrow.I can hardly wait! I think the guitar is really going to help the sound of our band.We call the band Skinny Dog because of the skinny dog that lives near our practice hall. Our band sounds very good now.Mr Walton, the music teacher, heard us practicing today at school, and he came in to listen for a while. He seemed to enjoy it.When we finished,he said we should try to have a gig at a party or something. 相似文献

Astronomers said that they are keeping close watch on a newly discovered 1. 2 mile-wide asteroid (小行星) to determine whether it will collide with Earth in 2019. There is a slight chance that the asteroid, dubbed 2002 NT7, could smack the Earth on Feb. 1, 2019, causing a global catastrophe. Astronomers said the odds were one in 250, 000 and further calculation would probably show it will miss the planet entirely. It now heads the list of asteroids and comets monitored by NASA but as scientists learn more it isn't expected to stay there.Astronomers with the Lincoln Near Earth Asteroid Research Project used a New Mexico telescope to discover the space rock, when it was about 84 million miles from Earth. It is in orbit (轨道) around the sun. 相似文献

Is grammar a thing or is it something that happens? This paper will argue that maybe it is a bit of both. When we describe language, as in the grammar of English, grammar is more noun-like than verb-like. It is a body of facts about the language: "The present perfect is formed by the auxiliary have plus the past participle", etc. On the other hand, when we use language in real communication, grammar manifests itself in ways that seem to have little to do with the conscious appli 相似文献

Agroup of scientists claims to have found evidence of nuclear fusion in a vase-size flask of liquid. The researchers say they created tiny bubbles that seemed to have collapsed with enough violence to force atomic nuclei to fuse. Skepticism about the results outweighs confidence in them. National Laboratory and his colleagues are confirmed, scientists will have a new way to study fusion reactions. A far more speculative and exciting possibility is that the tabletop experiments might lead to the long-sought goal of harnessing fusion for gener- 相似文献

When I was ten years old, a little dog called Xueqiu came into my life as a birthday present. It was a pretty dog with long white hair. And the hair felt very soft. At first I hated it, because I didn't like animals at all. But wherever I went it always followed me as if it liked me. Slowly and slowly, I began to like it, too. One day, our family were going to my grandma's in our car without taking Xueqiu. But after we drove more than twenty minutes, the dog suddenly came out from under the seat. That made us laugh happily. My father said,"Xueqiu brings us not only happiness but also surprise."One evening it was time for dinner, but I couldn't find my little brother. My parents were worried about him. At that time, Xueqiu came back. It cried loudly, and then ran out very fast. I ran after it. A long time later, I saw my brother. He was badly hurt in his right leg. Looking at him, I felt very sad. Then I took him to a hospital for treatment. From then on, Xueqiu became a pet in our heart. It was a clever dog. It even warned me not to pollute the environment. Not too long ago, I threw about some rubbish in a park. It went on shouting until I picked it up and put it into a dustbin. Then it looked at me with a smile. 相似文献

Do you know something about tree rings? Do you know they can tell us what the weather was like, sometimes they can show us an exact record of the weather even hundreds of years ago. A tree will grow well in a climate with lots of sunlight and rainfall. It is also expected that little sunlight or rainfall will limit the growth of a tree. The change from a favorable to an unfavorable climate can be seen by reading the tree ringsin a tree trunk. To find out the w eather of tenyears ago, countthe r… 相似文献
