Dyslexia—A molecular disorder of neuronal migration

For 25 years now, there has been a serious attempt to get at the fundamental cause(s) of dyslexia in our laboratory. A great deal of research has been carried out on the psychological and brain underpinnings of the linguistic dysfunctions seen in dyslexia, but attempts to get at its cause have been limited. Initially, observations were made on the brains of persons with dyslexia who had died and their brains donated for research. These observations were modeled in animal models in order to better understand the full extent of anatomical and developmental brain characteristics. More recently, models have begun to employ genetic manipulations in order to close the gap between genes, brain, and behavior. In this article based on a lecture given in memory of Dr. Norman Geschwind to the International Dyslexia Association assembly in Philadelphia in 2004, I outline the history of the research leading up to the most recent findings. These findings consist of experiments using methods that interfere with the function of DNA, using as constructs genes that have been implicated in dyslexia, which cause developmental problems of neuronal migration in rats, secondary brain changes in response to the migration problems, and abnormal processing of sounds.

This study looks into the translation characteristics of while-clauses in Great Expectation by investigating its Chinese correspondences based on the data collected from English-Chinese Parallel Concordance and another Chinese version. The result reveals that the majority of while-clauses are translated by substitution and are translated into adverbial adjuncts.

University Studies and Concept of Reality—A Study of Effects of Education

The project's background

Research about the effects of education at an individual level are to a great extent concentrated to the higher levels of the educational system. Ever since the 1930's extensive research has been conducted, not least in the United States, about what effects on knowledge and values originate from university training. As this project has as its main purpose—with examples from a number of different fields of study—to describe and try to understand enduring effects of a cognitive nature which higher education can contribute to, there is reason to pay attention to those features in previous research that have concerned growth of knowledge and/or cognitive development. According to a survey that was made in a different context (Dahlgren, 1982), it is possible to classify the cognitive effects of education into three levels. The first level might be the one that is most evidently associated with formal education, i.e., the level where specific knowledge and skills within different subjects appear. It is of course not surprising to find that students that are about to leave an education where they have taken extensive courses in, for instance, biology and chemistry perform better at tests with problems of a scientific nature than a group of students that have recently started the same kind of education.

The Distinctive Feature of Nashe＇s Poetry Spring——A Study of Spring

Thomas Nashe‘s Spring is a lyric poem extracted from his comedy “Will Summer‘s Testament”. It is a poem of iambic pentameter. The whole poem is made up of three stanzas. Simple and plain as its language is , it is the language of common speech of his own time, ingeniously chosen, refined, modified and heightened. The author‘s use of a combination of alliteration, mediate and end rhyme in its rhyme scheme makes the poem read as smoothly and briskly as singing a song. His arrangement of four rhythm or beating schemes in a single poem makes the poem confirm to no conventional pattern. His employment of many rhetorical devices makes the poem vivid, imaginative and peffecdve.     

On Subtitle Translation of Sitcoms——A Case Study of The Big Bang Theory

As we all know that exquisite subtitle translation of foreign film and television series is the fatal elements for them to spread among Chinese audiences. This article is based on Eugene·Nida’s"the Functional Equivalence"principle with three char acteristics of sitcoms’subtitle to study the type, form and features of the Big Bang Theory, which lead to the conclusion of sitcom subtitle’s characteristics. It helps us to analyze its subtitle from six aspects. As the result, the author of the paper makes the conclusion of translation tactic about Big Bang Theory, which could help the subtitle translation of similar sitcoms.     

A Simplified Estimation of Latent State—Trait Parameters

The latent state–trait (LST) theory is an extension of the classical test theory that allows one to decompose a test score into a true trait, a true state residual, and an error component. For practical applications, the variances of these latent variables may be estimated with standard methods of structural equation modeling (SEM). These estimates allow one to decompose the coefficient of reliability into a coefficient of consistency (indicating true effects of the person) plus a coefficient of occasion specificity (indicating true effects of the situation and the person–situation interaction). One disadvantage of this approach is that the standard SEM analysis requires large sample sizes. This article aims to overcome this disadvantage by presenting a simple method that allows one to estimate the LST parameters algebraically from the observed covariance matrix. A Monte Carlo simulation suggests that the proposed method may be superior to the standard SEM analysis in small samples.
