The Teaching of Modern Languages in Primary Schools

The teaching of a foreign language before ten or eleven years of age has always existed, but it is only since the second world war, and with the object of promoting better international understanding, among other things, that it has undergone extensive development, especially in the United States, Great Britain and France. As far as Europe is concerned, a meeting of all the European ministers of education was held in Hamburg in 1962; on this occasion the ministers stated that the teaching of languages was not giving satisfactory results, and they made recommendations intended to encourage

有感于中山大学珠海校区基础实验中心的管理模式，结合我校信息工程学院实验中心的实际情况，对现代化的实验平台——实验中心的含义及优点进行了探讨。     

Modern Languages and CD-ROM-based Learning

This article investigates the nature of language learning using CD-ROM packages. The research explores cognitive processes and alternative learning experiences which contrast with conventional delivery modes in foreign language teaching. The article concludes that CD-ROM can promote vocabulary acquisition, pronunciation and independent learning and has a major contribution to make to the development of language teaching and learning.

The Fixed Image in the Teaching of Modern Languages

In so-called ‘integrated’ audio-visual language courses, still pictures (ie slides, film stills, flannel board figures, drawings photographs, etc) have two possible functions: firstly, they simu- late the enunciative aspects of communication n i a foreign language, and secondly, they serve as equivalents to the foreign linguistic signs used i n this communication. The first of these functions consists of an artificial reproduction at a classroom level of the non-linguistic environments in which these foreign forms can be used. The second function is a kind of transcoding system, which works in a visual manner on the meanings of these linguistic forms. These two functions, each in accordance with their own particular characteristics, have the effect of providing an interpretation to the foreign expressions and thereby precluding the necessity of any direct translation into a level of language known to the class.

2000年2月底,德国艺术家帕尔德海姆的作品<世纪之轴>展示于江苏镇江.本文在赏析这次艺术活动的同时,对现代艺术的发展和演变作了简略的回顾.作者认为,对于现代社会而言,艺术已不是简单的反映和表现生活的手段.它既非模仿本能的体现,亦非单纯的情感交流,而是更多地表现出人对生存的世界和生命意义的一种追问.同时,现代艺术形式的丰富性也为当下艺术的创造提供了多样的可能.

The Production of Audio-Visual Materials and their Use in the Teaching of Modern Languages

Herr Lingsch began by giving an account of the present and planned productions of the Institute in Munich and touching on the considerations and views which led to their type of productions. The sequence of Film-picture-sound begins, in subjects such as Geography and Science, with the medium of the moving picture, which is so essential to them. In modern languages the acoustic media are the more important aids. A pioneering experiment in the use of film in modern language teaching took place in Austria in 1943. Annie Stucker-Krauszler used the silent puppet film The Race between the Hare and the Hedgehog for conversation exercises in teaching English. Without there being a direct connection, Gerald Fleming has been using the silent 8mm loop film for some years. In short cartoon films he presents brief episodes of everyday life in France. The 16mm sound film after the war can be categorized as follows:

The Use of Music for Learning Languages

Throughout time,healers,philosophers,scientists,and teachers have recognized the place of music for therapeutic and developmental functions(Bancroft,1985:3-7).Researchers over the last twenty years have made astounding advances in the the ory of language acquisition.Many find the pedagogical conjoining of language and music compelling.The first part of this review focuses on the historical and developmental proofs of music’ s relationship with language learning.In part two,neurological the ory on music and the mind are covered.Part three summarizes scholarly inquiry on the use of music for learning languages,espe cially those studies that could prove most instructive both for language teachers and for music therapists in the development of curricula.

文章从歧义的类型、歧义成因、歧义格式和消除歧义的方法等方面对现代汉语和维吾尔语两种语言中的短语歧义现象进行了描写与分析,并试图找出异同点。     

Modern Languages in the School Curriculum: a philosophical view

This article is based on an analysis of two types of argument, called utilitarian and educational respectively, which are commonly used to justify the teaching of modern/foreign languages in schools. Serious flaws are identified in the utilitarian arguments often employed to defend the teaching of modern languages and different educational arguments which might be offered as justification for their inclusion in the school curriculum are distinguished and appraised. The paper concludes with a consideration of the implications of the foregoing analysis for the place of modern languages in the school curriculum.
