A Brief Analysis of Negative Transfer of Chinese on the English Writings

Based on the researches of language transfer,contrastive analysis and error analysis,this paper tries to investigate the negative transfer of Chinese on Chinese students’English writings from the perspective of syntax.During one and a half months’teaching practice in Shannxi Hanzhong No.1 Middle School,the author lived through the real teaching process and found that there were lots of problems in students’English writings.The author makes a contrastive study of the different characteristics existing in Chinese and English languag es at the level of syntax,and analyses the typical syntactic errors appearing in the 60 students’English compositions collected from one or dinary class.These syntactic errors are caused by the negative transfer of Chinese.The purpose of the investigation is to study in what pat tern students have been influenced by Chinese in their English writings.Based on the findings and analysis of the mother tongue transfer on English writings,some implications are also provided in order to help minimize or eliminate the interference of negative transfer of the Chinese in students’English writings and improve the teaching and learning of English.     

The Application of Pragmatics in College English Teaching

The teaching of pragmatic knowledge is as important as those grammatical rules.It is very critical for a successful communication.An increasingly large number of English language teachers who possess a special interest in pragmatics begin to adopt the pragmatic teaching which aims at promoting students’communicative competence.In order to improve students’ communicative ability,teachers must pay attention to the importance of pragmatics in teaching process.Only in this way can college students be trained to use language correctly and properly.     

The Constraints of CLT’ s Application in ELT Classroom

Communicative Language Teaching(CLT) aims to develop students’ communicative competence,while it does not work as expected with many students lacking of successful experience in English communication.In terms of the principles and characteristics of CLT,this paper tries to make an analysis on the causes of this phenomenon from three aspects:students,teachers and educational system.Some suggestions,presented in the end,hopefully,can bring some enlightenment on the English Language Teaching(ELT) of China.     

Strategies for Effective Comments on Students’ Written Assignments

Abstract:Comments on students’assignments are important for English course.The loopholes in teachers’working schemes-comments of their students’written assignments are the clues around which the paper spreads.In the process of teaching,some English teachers pay so much attention to the contents taught in class but ignore the comments on students’written assignments.Consequently,it is not applicable for students to correct their mistakes in time and they probably make the same mistakes repeatedly.     

A Study of Non-English Majors’Errors in English Writing

Researchers in the field of Second Language Acquisition (SLA) have long held the interest towards the teaching of college English writing. Their research topics, range from how to improve college students’ability to write with English as their second language, to how to correct their wrong expressions in their writing. This article mainly aims at exploring college students’ various writing errors and mistakes,trying to provide some hints for college students and teachers about English writing. Such studies are abundant.     

Brief Survey of the Communicative Approach and the Strategy of Improving the Students’ Communicative Competence

With the rapid development of economy and improvement position of English as an international language in our country,English teaching draw a lot of attention nowadays.In traditional English teaching,it's the teachers who manipulate everything in class,where students are seen as receivers of knowledge.Therefore,it lacks cooperation between teachers and students.Students have no opportunity to apply what they have learnt in class to practical communications.In this teachers-centered class,students are not able to bring themselves into full play,which explains the low quality of English teaching in some schools and students fail to communicate with others after many years' learning.Based on the theory of Communicative Approach,the paper analyses its advantages and existing problems in application and proposes some strategy of improving students'Communicative Competence.

Motivation is one of the most important factors access to success.There are three types of students’ motivation in English learning.In order to get good result in the process of teaching,teachers try their best to develop students’ motivation.They have tried many ways,such as enhancing students’ interesting through playing games,introduce the culture of English speaking countries.It’s meaningful that teachers develop several kinds of motivation at the same time.All these important methods can be used in actually teaching to get a better result.     

Students’ English Learning Anxiety in Senior High School

Since 1970s,the research on second language acquisition has been developed with times.The research focus of lLanguage teach ing has shifted from the study of how to teach students to how to learn for students,with particular attention to explore the influence that students’psychological factors such as learning motivation,learning attitude and learning anxiety have on learning outcomes.Among those emotional variables,anxiety is considered to be one of the most critical psychological variables.English classroom anxiety is different from the ordinary classroom anxiety and receives much attention from scholars.Horwiz(1986) pointed out that foreign language anxiety is a unique phenomenon in language learning.In China,English learning in senior high school is a very important period.It is a common phenomenon to see students behaving anxiously in the English class.Therefore,the anxiety in the English class of senior high school de serves attention.This paper will analyze the main reasons of students’anxiety and points out several effectively methods to relieve their anxiety so as to enhance English classroom teaching and learning effect.     

To What Extent and in What Areas Do Chinese Students Encounter Difficulties with the English Spelling

Writing system is totally different from Chinese writing system.From Chinese learners of English know that,English words are seen as illogical and inconsistent.Learning English spelling presents some difficulties for Chinese students because of inconsistencies in English words.But what type of errors do Chinese students make? The intention of this paper is to find out the types of errors for Chinese students and the cause for these mistakes in order to find an approach to improve their spelling accuracy.     

Effectiveness Study of Lead-in of New Lessons in Classroom Teaching

English teaching is an integral part of education,which shoulders the responsibility of rendering rudimentary knowledge of English to the students,providing the students with the listening,speaking,reading and writing ability,as well as the obligation of carrying out ideological education and cultivating their noble and healthy sentiment.In teaching,the teachers should pay special attention to the students’ thirst for English learning and give full play to their initiative,which demands enough lead-in preparation before class.The lead-in of new lessons bears a direct impact on the quality of the classroom teaching.This thesis will make an analysis of this problem in two aspects.     

Implications of Output Hypothesis on College English Writing

With the reform of college English course,the objectives,philosophy and models of Chinese EFL teaching have been deeply changed.So college students are required to have higher language proficiency;it is also a challenge for the English teachers in our country.The traditional teaching mode should be changed.College English teaching is not only to input knowledge to students,but also to foster their skills on the application of knowledge,and excavate their potential in order to promote their language proficiency.Writing,as one of the efficient ways to measure students’comprehensive English ability,has attracted more attention in the field of English researches,which,however,got little improvement so far.What we can see from the requirements is that college students and teachers should put more attention on their output instead of input alone.Therefore,this paper intends to apply Swain’s "Output Hypothesis" to the college English teaching of non-English major students in China,and make some teaching suggestions based on the three functions of the "Output Hypothesis".     

Chinglish in College English Writings:A Case Study of Non-English Major Students in HNU

Chinglish has been identified by many English teachers and scholars as one of the major mistakes Chinese ESL students make in writings.This paper categorizes and analyzes five major error types in 120 assigned writings of non-English major students of HNU,and offers several suggestions to reduce Chinglish.     

Discussion on College Teacher’s Role in Students’Autonomous Learning

In recent years,with the shift from traditional teacher-centered model to new learner-centered model in foreign language teaching,autonomous learning has become a research hotspot in foreign language circle.Although the researches on this issue are supposed to be prosperous,the attempt to look into the change of teachers’role on learner autonomy seems fairly limited.Therefore,this paper aims to deal with the changing of teachers’role in college students’autonomous learning.The significance of this paper is to make teachers adapt to their new roles so as to further improve their college teaching efficiency.     

The Inspiration of The Interpreter’s Roles to College English Teaching

Jef Verschueren is the representative of European Continental pragmatic thought.He puts forward a new theory that pragmatics is a perspective on language and he uses the theory of adaptation to analyze pragmatics."The general concern for the study of linguistic pragmatics is to understand the meaningful functioning of a language as a dynamic process operating on context-structure relationships at various levels of salience"(Verschuren 2000:69).The focal points in contexts are the utterer and the interpreter,for the physical,social and mental aspects of contexts are activated by language users’cognitive processes.Verschueren divided interpreter’s roles into five types:addressee,side participant,bystander,listener-in and eavesdropper,which can explain the adaptation of context and language choices.This is also applicable in college English classroom as the English class is also a context.At present students taught at the same time by the same teacher do not master the knowledge at the same level.One of the reason is that students are not engaged in the class at the same level.According to the Verschueren’s theory,the best English teaching class is one that each student in the addressee of teachers.Addressee is a metaphor which means everyone should follow the teachers’explanation carefully and take part in the teaching activities.It has something to do with interaction theory,which considers students as active individuals but not passive receivers.One of the common interaction patterns is questioning.In this thesis,the question how to make students addresses through adoption of questioning approach in college English class will be researched.

The main goal of English is to train the students’communicative competence in English language,which is embodied in the students’oral expressive abilities.So it is important for teachers to cultivate the students’speaking abilities.In class,teacher should cultivate students and organize the student-centered activity effectively,providing more chances for students to practice English,in order to improve the oral English teaching.Hence,teachers should play the roles well,respectively as director,participant,consultant,organizer and tutor.     

Classroom Observation on Developing Students’Competence in SEIB

China’s entry to WTO and China’s 2008 Olympic Games have widely opened the door to the outside world.Tal ents with business knowledge and excellent oral English are urgently needed.For students in English major,we give the course of Spoken English for International Business(SEIB) to improve their abilities in SEIB.The author aims to use the methods like classroom observation,interview,questionnaire survey to observe and compare two classes and two teachers to explore the rela tions between students’competence development and teachers’with different levels and teaching practice,and to gain some enlightenment on students’competence developing in SEIB from the study.     

The English Teachers' Correction Strategies toward Students' Oral Errors in College

Based on the requirements of college English curriculum,college students should have natural and fluent pronunciation and intonation in their oral English.Students’ability to communicate successfully has become an ultimate goal for schools.Therefore,to make some requirements on English teachers’correction strategies toward students’oral errors in the procedure of teaching becomes necessary.Through researching,analyzing the listed examples and making an investigation,the author finds out that there are some problems in English teachers’attitudes and treatment toward college students’oral errors.The author hopes that her analyses and findings could help the teachers to conduct a more appropriate correction strategies which may be helpful for the teachers to manage their classrooms effectively,thus to eliminate the frustrating feelings of the students and to facilitate an efficient interaction between the teachers and the students.     

On the Development of Students’ Intercultural Communicative Competence in College English Classes

More frequent international contacts require culture teaching to be incorporated into college English classes so as to develop students’ intercultural communicative competence. English culture is different from Chinese at linguistic and pragmatic levels and in nonverbal communication as well. To make students engage in intercultural communication successfully, teachers should first develop their "critical cultural awareness".Meanwhile, they need to try flexible ways of culture teaching and create an authentic learning environment for the students. Opportunities should also be created for the students to communicate in the real context. Students’ autonomy to learn the language and its culture should also be nurtured.     

Teacher’s Role in the Oral English Class

English speaking has been paid more attention today, especially in the age of globalization. Teachers are attempting to find out more effective methods to enhance the teaching results of English speaking. Facing the great demands and present difficulties of oral English classes, teachers have to conduct more study and practice to find out what roles that an oral English teacher has to take in the oral English classroom. Compared with the traditional teaching role in the English classroom, an oral English teacher has to fulfill more than one role in the classroom teaching so as to provide better learning conditions for students. Lacking more exposure to the real interaction with native speakers, students expect the oral English teacher to be a creator of the language environment. With various teaching and learning activities in the oral English classroom, the teacher has to be a good organizer to ensure every student to achieve improvement. An oral English teacher also has to correct students’language errors while ensuring the smooth progress of the classroom teaching. Only when an oral English teacher make clear what roles he or she has to take in the classroom can he or she achieve effective teaching.     

A Study of Code-Switching in Students’ Talk in College English Class

Code-switching between English and Chinese usually occurs in students’ talk when they are involved in taking communicative language activities in college English class. This paper studies the situations in which students are likely to use codeswitching and analyzes it from the perspective of the mental world in Verscheren’s Adaptation Theory. It shows that inadequate mastery of English language, cultural differences and the improper adjustment to context may lead to students’ using of codeswitching. It also shows that the use of code-switching in students’ talk adapts to students’ cognitive elements and emotive elements as well.
