Ernest Hemingway and His Writing

Ernest Hemingway,the modern American writer and Noble Prize winner for literature,transferred his life experiences into his writing.Through his works(For Whom the Bell Tolls,The Old Man and the Sea,The Sun also Rises,A Farewell to Arms,etc.),we can see his life style and writing style merged.His colorful lifestyle influenced his writing a lot.In addition,a large part of Hemingway’s success was due to the influence of world-famous contemporary writers.At the same time,the symbolist writers influenced him.In summary,he was a writer who based his writing greatly on his life experience.His career was rooted in the transformation of his inner vision by his experience.

The Old Man-the Real Winner in the Struggle Between Ego and Superego

The Old Man and the Sea was an excellent novel written by the famous American novelist Ernest Hemingway and the novel led to the Nobel Prize which he won in 1954.The novel is a simple story about a Cuban fisherman Santiago’s struggle with a marlin and sharks on the sea.In fact it has deep meaning,which implies the struggle between one’s ego and superego.Hemingway eulogizes the hero through the process of the struggle.The paper consists of three parts.The first part is the introduction to the writer and the novel.The second part analyzes the hero Santiago in details,including his struggle with the marlin and the sharks,his interest in the struggles.The third part is the conclusion that the hero Santiago’s superego controls his ego in the struggle and he is a real winner.     

Rising Acceptance of Life and Negative Capability—A Reading of John Keats’s Odes

"Beauty is truth, truth beauty"-the famous line in English romantic poet John Keats’Ode on a Grecian Urn-has triggered wide discussion and numerous interpretations. From the point of"negative capability", a phrase first coined by Keats himself, this paper is attempting to display the consistency between that poetic line and the poet’s creation and life attitude on the whole. For this purpose, this paper will mainly introduce and interpret five of Keats’famous odes in the order of their display of his"rising acceptance of life": Ode to a Nightingale, Ode on a Grecian Urn, Ode to Autumn, Ode on Melancholy and Ode on Indolence. This paper would like to show in the first three Keats’s positive quest in different aspects and on certain levels, the fourth the underlying tone of life’s polyphonous song, and the final the"negative capability"that constitutes his healthy attitude toward creation and life. Finally, this paper hopes to demonstrate that it is such capability that enables the poet to growingly accept life, and it is also essential to him as a philosophical poet.     

On Causes of Teddy’s Tragedy in Shutter Island by Psychoanalysis

Shutter Island is a movie directed by Martin Scorsese.It tells a story about a psychotic,Teddy,who committed a serious crime and lived in fantasy from then on.A group of psychologists tried to help him by exposing the reality and forcing him to face it.At last,Teddy’s memory was recovered.Yet he chose to receive lobotomy to end his pain.From Freud’s psychoanalytic point of view,Teddy’s tragedy is caused by the conflict between his id,ego and superego,and his fantasy world is a result of self-defense mechanism.     

Analysis of Stephen Blackpool's Marriage:A Psychoanalytic Approach

In the novel of Hard Times, Dickens expressed his own concern with the conflict between labor and capital through the character Stephen Blackpool. The author used many words depicting Stephen's pathetic life, especially his unfortunate marriage, presenting him to the readers as a fully developed character. However, Stephen's pathetic life is not closely related to his major function in the novel, which is for Dickens to voice his opinions on class struggles. Presumably, the author has more intentions, be it conscious or unconscious, in assigning so many pages to the depiction of Stephen. Inspired by this presumption, I read through Dickens's biography and explored his married life. Based on the research work, a caparison between Stephen's and Dickens's marriages is conducted in this paper, applying Freud's psychoanalytical theory. The comparative analysis proves to be fruitful and reviews some implications about the author's own life.

Herzog is one of the most successful novels written by the Jewish Nobel Prize winner Saul Bellow. Herzog, the protagonist of the novel, has experienced a spiritual and emotional collapse, triggered by the breakup of his second marriage and his contemplation of the wasteland of modern life. Heart of Darkness was written by Joseph Conrad and published as a whole in 1902.The story begins on a British ship"the Nellie"moored on the coast of the Thames.It mainly talks about what Marlow sees and thinks when he begins his journey up to the Congo Riveres and reveals a turning process of a white colonizer called Kurts who is at the very beginning,an idealistic white colonizer trying to bring"civilization"and"progress"to the Africa but in the end falls into a greedy,cruel person.The novel,on the one hand,describes the terrible life of African peple and reveals the tyranne,greed of western colonism and stong racism;and on the other hand,it also shows readers a strong orientalism towards the Africa.So my purpose of the paper is to analyse how Orientalism is revealed in the Heart of Darkness.
