Possibilities of International Diffusion and Documentation of Scientific Innovations by Communication Satellites

A study of the attitude of students towards the Use of Library course which involves library orientation/bibliographic instruction and user education was conducted during the 1988/89 academic session. Use of Library is one of the courses taught in the general studies programme which has been going at Bendel State University for 4 years. The object of the study was to test whether students liked the Use of Library course, whether they found it useful, whether it should continue to be compulsory or be made optional, and the impact of the programme. The result of the study is highly positive. The respondents found the course very useful both in academic work and in social life. The respondents were ambivalent as to whether the course should continue to be compulsory or be made optional. The administration of the programme is delineated. Suggestions are made for the improvement of the course.     

The Smile of Mona Lisa: Postcolonial Desires,Nationalist Families,and the Birth of Consumer Television in India

This paper examines how the inception of consumer television in India during the late 1980s facilitated both market liberalization and a conservative politics of class, gender, and religio-cultural community. As reflected in the discourses and images in the English press, consumer television made room for novel figures of desire, changing forms of cultural citizenship, and new spaces of governance. Advertised through images of postcolonial whiteness that glamorized capital and technology, television also brought with it anxieties regarding westernization, consumption, and gender reform. These conflicting discourses produced the nationalist TV family as part of a new gender politics and as a new form of cultural governance that sought to forge tighter links between market, state, and conservative notions of community.

O'Neill,Digital Radio in Europe: Technologies,Industries, and Cultures

The U.S. Government's role as overseer of the World War II airwaves was significant, given the government's task of establishing a supervisory mechanism for the radio industry that would serve the need of national security and, at the same time, minimize the need for bureaucratic intrusion into program decision making. A mechanism also was needed to police the domestic airwaves for unlicensed intruders and to monitor the international airwaves for enemy propaganda. To accomplish these tasks, the government enlisted the services of three agencies: the Federal Communications Commission, the Defense Communications Board, and the Office of Censorship. This paper examines the structure, operation, and contribution of each.     

Teaching Across Cultures: Interaction of Cultural Causes and Educational Effects

Teaching across cultures as a result of a Fulbright Senior Fellowship is a life-changing event for many Fulbright Fellows. This American author experienced powerful classroom dynamics in teaching her library science students at the University of Botswana during her 1999–2000 Fulbright. Her attempt to restructure a traditional lecture class to a student-centered learning environment created classroom dynamics that forced her to examine her pedagogical beliefs for their evident weaknesses. This ethnographic study reports on her teaching experiences and her analysis of what she discovered in the process, findings that continue to impact her study of teaching and learning.

本文试图以存在于英汉文化中的"马"这一寻常事物作为剖析对象,比较英汉语中有关于"马"的种种表示法,以期能在一定程度上把握英汉两种语言文化的基本异同点.马年折射出英汉民族习俗的差异,马的称谓体现了英汉两种语言在文字和词语体系范畴中的不同特点,有关"马"的词汇及习语反映了"马"在不同文化中人文意义的异同.     

Do Morals Featured in Media Content Correspond with Moral Intuitions in Media Users?: A Test of the MIME in Two Cultures

ABSTRACT

The model of intuitive morality and exemplars (MIME) predicts that moral representations in media content can activate related moral intuitions in audiences, and that audience members in turn are influenced by their moral instincts to select content featuring corresponding moral values. This proposition was tested and confirmed in a two-phase study. Content analyses measured the frequency of moral domain representations in top-rated popular TV serials from India and the U.S., while an implicit measure (MF-AMP) gauged the strength of corresponding moral intuitions in viewers and non-viewers of these shows.
