Investigating Primary Source Literacy

Primary source research requires students to acquire specialized research skills. This paper presents results from a user study testing the effectiveness of a Web guide designed to convey the concepts behind “primary source literacy”. The study also evaluated students' strengths and weaknesses when conducting primary source research.

The textbook problem: Investigating one possible solution

This article explores the inherent problems for academic libraries in providing access to textbooks to students, the growing demand for such access by students, and presents the findings of a reserve pilot project conducted at a major Midwest university. Findings indicate the pros and cons of the pilot attempted as well as demonstrating the need for continued research and collaborative work with appropriate organizations on the campus and beyond.

The “topless radio”; phenomenon was briefly widespread— and controversy about such formats continues to appear. This article reviews two important FCC decisions, Sonderling (WGLD‐FM), and Pacifica (WBAI‐FM), to discern and describe FCC policy trends and attempts to define just what obscenity and indecency is and what standards for broadcasting should exist. Dr. Feldman is on the speech faculty at Denison University (Ohio), while Dr. Tickton teaches mass communication and speech at, respectively, Norfolk State College and Old Dominion University, both in Virginia.

乾隆十五年东北察访瑞树活动简述

乾隆十二年(1747)、十三年间,皇七子永琮、皇后富察氏先后病故,使乾隆帝深受打击。乾隆十三年时,大金川之役进展不顺,清军久攻不胜。直到乾隆十四年,清廷才获得了表面上的胜利。无论从家庭,还是统治方面,乾隆帝都承受着前所未有的考验,他在上谕中说:"朕御极之初,尝意至十三年时,国家必有拂意之事,非计料所及者。"(1)于是,乾隆帝的统治风格发生了重大改变,由宽松而变为严苛。正当乾隆帝处于这个"拂意"之事频发的时候,乾隆十五年年初,从遥远的东北边疆传来了"天降祥瑞"的消息——一棵汇集八种不同植物于一身的瑞树秘密地生长在乌苏里江支流毕歆河畔。对乾隆帝来说,这无疑是上天对王朝的庇佑。于是,他组织了一次瑞树察访活动,派遣画家将原生地的瑞树准确地描绘下来。

Investigating relationships within and between category networks in Wikipedia

This work maps and analyses cross-citations in the areas of Biology, Mathematics, Physics and Medicine in the English version of Wikipedia, which are represented as an undirected complex network where the entries correspond to nodes and the citations among the entries are mapped as edges. We found a high value of clustering coefficient for the areas of Biology and Medicine, and a small value for Mathematics and Physics. The topological organization is also different for each network, including a modular structure for Biology and Medicine, a sparse structure for Mathematics and a dense core for Physics. The networks have degree distributions that can be approximated by a power-law with a cut-off. The assortativity of the isolated networks has also been investigated and the results indicate distinct patterns for each subject. We estimated the betweenness centrality of each node considering the full Wikipedia network, which contains the nodes of the four subjects and the edges between them. In addition, the average shortest path length between the subjects revealed a close relationship between the subjects of Biology and Physics, and also between Medicine and Physics. Our results indicate that the analysis of the full Wikipedia network cannot predict the behavior of the isolated categories since their properties can be very different from those observed in the full network.

作者基本信息在稿件真实性审查中的应用

以《肝胆胰外科杂志》编辑部2015-01-2016-07发现的疑似代写代投的86名作者的基本信息及其所投的93篇稿件为研究对象,分析发现:这些稿件的作者信息量少,部分作者手机号码与单位归属地不符,邮箱、用户名、密码呈以“作者姓名+后缀”批量化命名,与作者沟通也有较多疑点;稿件学术不端检测重复率虽低,但一稿多投现象严重,数据经不起推敲,某些特殊格式也有迹可循.通过对作者基本信息进行审查,编辑特别是初审编辑可以尽早发现代写代投稿件,提高工作效率,减少人力、物力和财力损失.     

关于上海新闻出版业发展状况的调研报告

根据2003年《新闻出版总署调研工作实施方案》,本课题组于2003年3月26—29日,对上海新闻出版业的发展进行了调研。课题组先后到上海市新闻出版局、上海世纪出版集团、上海新华发行集团、上海东方出版交易中心、解放日报报业集团、上海当纳利印刷有限公司和上海声像出版社等进行了典型调查,认真听取了他们对加快发展的意见和建议。     

Library Learning Spaces: Investigating Libraries and Investing in Student Feedback

ABSTRACT

We examine how students in academic libraries work; their furniture, technology and space needs; research methods used to determine these; and the results and evolution of our space design and assessment efforts. From the creation of a new collaborative center at Mann Library at Cornell University in 2007 to our latest space redesign in 2015, we've used a variety of qualitative and quantitative methods—including surveys, interviews, usability tests, and participatory design exercises—to discover the study behaviors and needs of users, applied this data to help redesign our collaborative study spaces, and assessed the results.

图书馆是传播科学文化的园地，肩负着提高全民族文化素质的使命、图书馆各项职能履行得到位与否，读者服务是关键．文章从学生投诉分析高校图书馆读者服务存在的问题及产生根源，探讨做好读者服务的途径。     

Investigating the universal distributions of normalized indicators and developing field-independent index

Using the dataset based on Thomson Reuters Scientific “Web of Science” the distributions of some well-known indicators, such as h-index and g-index, were investigated, and different citation behaviors across different scientific fields resulting from their field dependences were found. To develop a field-independent index, two scaling methods, based on average citation of subject category and journal, were used to normalize the citation received by each paper of a certain author. The distributions of the generalized h-indices in different fields were found to follow a lognormal function with mean and standard deviation of approximately ?0.8 and 0.8, respectively. A field-independent index fi-index was then proposed, and its distribution was found to satisfy a universal power-law function with scaling exponent α approaching 3.0. Both the power-law and the lognormal universality of the distributions verified the field independence of these indicators. However, deciding which of the scaling methods is the better one is necessary for the validation of the field-independent index.     

互联网环境下失真健康信息可信度判断的影响因素研究

伴随着Web 2.0时代网络健康信息体量的激增,人们普遍对互联网环境下健康信息质量产生忧虑,其主要原因是大量失真健康信息存在于互联网中,对信息接受者主观感知造成误导,并对消费者的健康知情决策带来潜在威胁。消费者在失真健康信息误导下所作出的健康决策可能会引发严重的健康后果,因此理解消费者对网络失真健康信息可信度判断的相关影响因素,对公民健康教育与全民健康促进都将具有积极意义。本文通过系统的文献回顾,分别从信息特征与个体特征视角归纳出消费者对失真健康信息可信度判断的若干影响因素,并提出相应研究问题。研究采用问卷调查法探索各研究问题,问卷设计利用信息话题与信息表征框架两个维度,选取八则失真健康信息作为问卷阅读素材,在对健康素养的测量上借鉴并汉化了国际通用的最新关键指标。研究结果发现:在信息特征方面,失真信息的表征框架与信息话题对消费者可信度判断有显著影响,且二者存在交互效应;在个体特征方面,年龄、性别、健康素养等因素对消费者失真信息可信度判断具有显著影响。图1。 表4。 参考文献61。

Investigating Suspense as a Predictor of Enjoyment in Sports Video Games

This study investigated suspense as a predictor of sports video game enjoyment by including the variable as a key part of a working model that also included presence, fanship, disposition, skill, and outcome. Results of a path analysis indicate a complex network of relationships impacting enjoyment. Suspense strongly impacted presence, which was an important determinant of enjoyment, while skill and outcome also explained a large portion of variance in enjoyment. The study highlights the complexity of the enjoyment experience as it relates to video games, and provides direction for future work on a theoretical model of video game enjoyment.
