Ethical Guidelines for Counseling Supervisors

The following Ethical Guidelines for Counseling Supervisors were adopted by the Association for Counselor Education and Supervision (ACES) Governing Council in March of 1993. The guidelines were written by a subcommittee of the ACES Supervision Interest Group, which comprised the following members: Gordon Hart, Chair; L. DiAnne Borders; Don Nance; and Louis Paradise. The guidelines first appeared in ACES Spectrum, Volume 53, Number 4, Summer, 1993.     

Ethical Implications for Supervisors in Counseling of Trainees

In this article, the authors explore the ethical issues for counselors who are in a dual role of counseling and supervising the same individuals. The difficulties of this dual relationship are discussed, and a guide for distinguishing supervision from counseling is offered.

Media Vans For In-Service Education

A media van is a fully equipped, mobile media facility. The Pennsylvania Deportment of Education uses media vans for on location training of large state with many rural areas, the van makes in-service media training possible in areas where it would be otherwise unavailable. Programmes are offered for teachers, aides, media specialists, librarians, and administrators in school districts throughout the state of Pennsylvania.     

Leadership in Guidance: A Survey of School Counseling Supervisors

The authors present the results of a survey of district-level school counseling supervisors in Virginia. The results indicate that few school divisions employ individuals with the title of guidance supervisor. In divisions where such positions exist, they are staffed most often by individuals with guidance training and experience. The supervisors surveyed indicated that they spend a substantial portion of their time providing direct consultative support and assistance to counselors, engage in few research activities, and have few consultative contacts with counselor educators. Recommendations regarding school counselor supervision are offered based on survey data.

Preparing Site Supervisors of Counselor Education Students

Counselor educators maintain a responsibility for providing site supervisors with professional development opportunities (Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs. 2009 ). The goal of this study was to evaluate a model for providing preparation to site supervisors. Significant differences were observed from pretest to posttest on the Supervisory Self‐Efficacy Scale (Johnson & Stewart, 2008 ).     

A Triadic Method of Supervision in the Training of Counselors and Counseling Supervisors

The article describes a triadic method of supervision that can be adapted to several settings, including the training of students in both counseling and supervision, as well as mutual peer supervision in employment settings. The triadic method reduces the complexities of the supervision process to teachable elements. As students learn to function alternately in the three roles of supervisor, commentator, and facilitator, they refine their skills in the four following basic processes of supervision: (a) the presentation of their counseling work, (b) the art of critical commentary, (c) the engagement in meaningful dialogue, and (d) the deepening of the here-and-now process inherent in supervision.     

Role of the University in Community College In-Service Education

Abstract

Of concern to many educators is in-service education of community college faculty. Some two-year colleges have looked to themselves for in-service programs and activities; many have turned to the university for this. A study was conducted among community college leaders and university professors involved in community college education to determine the current status of in-service education in the community college. Opinions related to this topic as well as the role of the university in in-service education of community college faculty were also sampled.     

In-Service Teacher Training in Higher Education: the Netherlands

In-service training within an organization is justified only if day-to-day practice does not meet certain standards. Not all the gaps, however, between the desired and the actual practice can be bridged or even narrowed by in-service training. A preliminary analysis of the practical problems may be warranted before one can decide upon any in-service training programme. Other solutions should be considered as well.

This article seeks to focus on the benefits of technology in the classroom as well as some of the issues that surround teachers and technology. The article also delves into the future of technology and education and provides some helpful tips for technology use in the classroom.
