Small College Counseling Centers:

College counseling centers have experienced continued change and development in roles and functions since their inception in the 1930s. Recent shifts include a focus on personal counseling, the broadening of services, and an increased severity in student problems. Administrative policy, restricted staffing, and limited budgets particularly impact small college counseling centers. This article explore these issues through a case study format and discusses the concurrent philosophical and training implications as challenges for the small college counseling center of the 1990s.     

College/University Counseling Centers Supporting Study Away: Challenges and Opportunities

Research points to significant numbers of students on college campuses experiencing mental health distress and an ever increasing number of college students who are choosing to make an off-campus educational experience a part of their college careers. When we consider both of these trends together, it is quite apparent that a significant number of students with mental health concerns will spend periods of time studying away from campus, with converging concerns among college mental health and study away professionals about how to best support these students. This article seeks to outline both challenges and opportunities inherent in the collaboration between campus professionals in supporting students with mental health issues before and during their study away experiences.     

Ethical Dilemmas in College Counseling:

Since 1988, the Professional Development Committee of ACPA Commission VII has written a column focusing on ethical dilemmas that face counselors and psychotherapists in a college setting. "Dear Doctor Ethics" has become extremely popular in the commission, and this article shares the first two years of the good doctor's work with counselors who are not Commission VII members. A commentary follows which compares and contrasts five ethical codes utilized by pscyhotherapists who work with college students.     

Personal Counseling for Counselors in Training: Guidelines for Supervisors

Personal counseling is a valuable growth experience for counselors in training. The authors provide a decision tree and guidelines for the supervisor's use in recommending personal counseling.

The Preparation of Master's‐Level Professional Counselors for Positions in College and University Counseling Centers

This study investigated college and university counseling center directors’ perceptions of the adequacy of the preparation of master's‐level counselors for work in college and university counseling centers. Results indicated that counselors were rated on average as prepared; however, many directors had concerns about counselors’ ability to work with students presenting more severe mental health issues. Findings are discussed, and implications for the training and preparation of college counseling practitioners are presented.

Counselors in all settings must understand marketing principles and be able to apply them ethically and effectively. Guidelines for counselor training and practice are suggested.     

Psychiatry Resident Rotations in University and College Counseling Centers: A Pilot Study of Rotation Types and Challenges

With an increased demand for mental health services, perceived increased severity of students presenting for services, and increased number of students prescribed psychotropic medications, university and college counseling center directors have had to increasingly identify psychiatric service options. Psychiatry residents can potentially help fill these needs. To better understand the role of psychiatry residents in university and college counseling programs, we conducted a web-based survey of United States psychiatry residency program directors. This study describes clinical activities and rotation characteristics of psychiatric residents working in counseling centers. Of the 48 residency programs that responded, 27 provide rotations at university or college counseling centers, and of those with rotations, 100% report that the residents rate these as very good or excellent. Expanding psychiatry residency rotations at college counseling centers may be mutually beneficial both to the centers and to psychiatric residents.     

College Counseling Today: Contemporary Students and How Counseling Centers Meet Their Needs

There is evidence that today’s college and university students are struggling with emotional and behavioral health problems at higher rates than in past generations. This article explores the various ways, utilizing a range of models, that college and university counseling centers have mobilized to respond to these challenges. We examine literature about the characteristics and concerns of the current student generation along with what counseling centers are doing to respond to the challenge of student needs. We describe a survey (N = 408) of members of the Association for University and College Counseling Center Directors (AUCCCD) and American College Counseling Association (ACCA) that elicited the kinds of services, functions, structures, and organizational relationships found in today’s counseling centers. In addition to confirming the core mission of providing counseling and psychotherapy, the survey revealed widespread counseling center collaboration and consultation activities beyond the counseling room. The survey also indicated a variety of administrative and structural arrangements in the way counseling centers are placed on their individual campuses. Finally, we suggest a framework for planning, executing, and evaluating counseling center and campus initiatives.     

College Counseling and Student Retention: Research Findings and Implications for Counseling Centers

College counseling centers may come under increasing scrutiny by administrators regarding how their services contribute to student retention. College counselors can use data to demonstrate a positive influence of counseling on retention, but they also need to educate administrators that student retention should be a consideration among many when evaluating the efficacy of services. The author reviews findings from studies on the impact of college counseling on retention and addresses implications for counseling centers.

College and University Counseling Centers: Questions in Search of Answers

College and university counseling centers are being influenced by changing populations of students and the concerns of a variety of constituencies and stakeholders about mental health issues. Although counseling centers can be important institutional resources in matters of recruitment, retention, and risk management, new legal and ethical issues and concerns about training programs have emerged. This article reviews research on these emerging questions and considers how counseling centers might respond.     

Dialectical Behavior Therapy in College Counseling Centers: Current Trends and Barriers to Implementation

The purpose of this study was to examine trends and barriers in implementation of dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) programs in college counseling centers (CCCs). Participants were 107 CCC employees who participated in an electronic survey. One third of respondents endorsed use or planned use of DBT at their centers. The most prevalent primary mode of DBT offered was group skills training. Highly endorsed barriers to implementation included productivity demands and lack of individual therapists, time for team consultation, and willingness to offer phone coaching. Suggested implementation strategies include developing community partnerships, use of virtual teams, supporting programs with campus data, and adapting DBT strategically.     

Using Recent Traumatic Episode Protocol in College Counseling Centers

Experiencing a traumatic event as a college student can have significant social, emotional, and academic consequences. This article discusses the use of an alternative protocol of eye‐movement desensitization and reprocessing, called Recent Traumatic Episode Protocol (E. Shapiro & Laub, 2008), and its use to reduce significant psychological distress of a college student who lived through a mass casualty shooting in the United States.

少数民族学生的成长环境和教育背景本身都具有一定的特殊性。随着各种少数民族政策措施的不断落地,高校对少数民族学生的教育管理也越来越重视,但是高校辅导员在思政教育、教学培养、日常管理和就业指导等方面的工作依然存在一些问题。而开展少数民族学生精准辅导工作不管是对国家、还是对高校,甚至是对个人,都具有重要的意义。高校辅导员可以通过创新思想政治教育方式、实施"一人一策"、开展就业精准帮扶等路径对少数民族学生进行精准辅导,以培养少数民族高水平优秀人才。     

心理辅导方法与技术在高校辅导员工作中的应用

在高校辅导员工作中借鉴心理辅导的方法与技术,既可以增强高校思想政治教育的科学性与实效性,也有利于高校学生心理辅导工作的健康发展。高校辅导员可以借用团体心理辅导活动,帮助新生快速相识、减少孤独感,初步形成班级凝聚力;采用班级心理辅导的方式,解决学生普遍困惑的问题;融入个别咨询的技术,与学生单独谈心,深入把握学生的思想状况,促进学生的成长和成才;在日常管理中渗透心理健康教育的理念,优化学生的心理素质,塑造其健全人格,培养其积极进取的人生态度。     

Computer‐Assisted Live Supervision in College Counseling Centers

The authors describe a computer‐based “bug‐in‐the‐eye” approach to counselor supervision that is well suited to college counseling centers. Hardware and software requirements, comparisons with other forms of supervision, support for and limitations of this approach, and recommendations are presented.
