A Profile of Lousy Supervision: Experienced Counselors' Perspectives

The authors used data from interviews with experienced counselors to examine ineffective supervision practices. The data yielded 6 overarching principles (e.g., unbalanced, intolerant of differences, untrained/immature) that permeated 3 general spheres of lousy supervision (e.g., technical/cognitive).

The incidence and effect of sexual intimacy in graduate education reported by randomly selected female Association for Counselor Education and Supervision members are analyzed. Discussion includes implications for counselor educators and supervisors.

南京大屠杀中性暴力罪行原因新探

1937年12月日军攻占南京后所犯暴行中,最引人注目的除了大屠杀以外,强奸与虐杀是不可忽视的严重罪行之一。事实上在某些语境下,对无辜妇女的强杀往往比屠杀更容易激起强烈的愤怒情绪,究其原因,则与人类社会中女性的地位不无关系,侵犯与愤怒事实上都源自对女性身份的相同设想。同时,南京大屠杀中大量性暴行的产生也与日本传统文化息息相关。本文试图结和女性主义对强奸的理解及日本历史文化背景,综合运用心理学方法分析南京大屠杀期间日军的性暴力原因。     

Sexual Harassment in PhD Supervision

This article analyses the previously unresearched dynamics of sexual harassment in cross-gender, one-to-one PhD supervision in a UK social science faculty education department. I discuss two women research students' reflections on their supervisory relationships with a sexually harassing male supervisor, including the processes of obtaining a supervisor and the establishment or curtailment of the relationship. When students decide whether or not to be supervised by a particular individual there is a tension between personal compatibility and relevant research expertise. Once the relationship is established there is a further tension because the boundaries between discussions about academic work and personal life are so easily blurred. In particular, it is suggested that the sexually harassing male supervisor cannot simply be viewed as an aberration, for his exploits reveal a strategic exploitation of conditions which are actually integral and arguably necessary to this distinctive academic relationship.     

Sexual Health Transformation Among College Student Educators in an Arts-Based HIV Prevention Intervention: A Qualitative Cross-Site Analysis

We examined the sexual health change process experienced by 26 college student sexual health educators from three geographic regions of the United States who participated in a multisite arts-based sexual health prevention program. We conducted eight focus groups and used a phenomenological approach to analyze data. We drew from social cognitive theory (SCT) to examine how sexual health knowledge, attitudes, self-efficacy, and communication shifted across the duration of participation. Findings suggest that the college student sexual health educators (a) developed enhanced sexual health awareness and critical consciousness, (b) questioned their own sexual health education and challenged previous beliefs, and (c) demonstrated self-efficacy related to intended behavior change and their perceived role as social justice advocates. We present both similarities and differences regarding the sexual health change process among the college student sexual health educators across the three sites.

Peer Helpers in Hungary: A Qualitative Analysis

Hungary is a country in transition that has no real tradition of peer helping. A qualitative study was carried out involving 13 peer helpers of two kinds (a) age-based peers, and (b) way-of-life-based peers (fellow helpers). The motivations for and the processes of becoming a peer helper were analyzed. Results showed the largest difference being that the motivation for becoming an aged-based peer helper tended to involve aspirations for a professional helping career, whereas way-of-life-based peer helpers typically involved recovery narratives. The experiences suggest that a helping system involving civil society (peers) might develop from a state-controlled help system.

Prior Sexual Victimization and Disclosure of Campus Sexual Violence Among College Students

Using survey data from a large, public university, the authors examined the relationships of precollege sexual violence experience to revictimization and disclosure. Among victims of campus sexual violence, those with prior sexual victimization were no more or less likely to disclose to campus resources and were less likely to disclose to peers. Results suggest that institutions need to be prepared to support students with a range of victimization experiences. There is also a need for earlier and expanded sexual violence education and awareness efforts.     

Sexual Assault Is Just the Tip of the Iceberg: Relationship and Sexual Violence Prevalence in College Students

With the advent of the “Dear Colleague” letter in 2011, higher education institutions have become focused on sexual assault and related policies, procedures regarding offenses, and prevention education. Institutions should consider using this spotlight on interpersonal dynamics to increase awareness about other types of relationship violence that may be more common. This secondary data analysis of 72,067 U.S. college students indicates stalking, emotional abuse, and physical abuse are very common. Along with relationship difficulties in general, these forms of relational violence occur more frequently than sexual assault. Implications for counseling and mental health services are provided.     

Under Construction: How Narrative Elements Shape Qualitative Research

This article considers how narrative constructs could be used to strengthen the writing process. The authors outline the narratological devices of plot, point of view, authorial distance, and character, and examine how these concepts can be used when writing with qualitative data. Narratological tools equip the researcher to selectively manage the presentation of data to tell an appropriate story. As part of the research process, scholars should consider what kind of story they seek to tell through the data.

现代战争叙事中的性暴力与话语禁忌

战争与性暴力紧密相连,但在传统文化中,只有当女性将之转化为贞节话语的一部分时,性暴力才会被讲述,它成为一种文化禁忌,这种禁忌在现代战争叙事中以直接或间接的方式再次体现出来。虽然女作家源于性别立场,有着对传统性暴力叙事的变现,但由于将这种变现寄托于民族主义,变现终未彻底。这表明,传统贞节话语因为男性和女性的共谋,使得对暴力主体的道德反省缺乏,性暴力对女性的戕害本质被忽视,这是性暴力行为在日常生活和战争中绵延不绝的原因。     

浅析婚姻暴力

婚姻是人生最重要的组成部分，婚姻中的家庭暴力是一个不容忽视的问题，它严重阻碍了社会的发展和进步。对于婚姻中的家庭暴力方面的立法及救助措施。各国的专家、学者及立法机构对该问题的研究尚处在探索阶段，也就没有形成一整套调整婚姻中家庭暴力的法律体系。本文着重论述婚姻中家庭暴力产生的原因，法律体系中的缺陷及法律救助几方面的内容，以期待一套完善的反婚姻家庭暴力法律法规的出台。

家庭暴力危害受害人的身心健康，侵犯其合法权益，破环社会的稳定和发展。本文对家庭暴力的概念、特点、危害、存在的原因进行了法律分析，并对防治对策提出了几点建议。     

Interpersonal Violence and Sexual Assault: Trauma-Informed Communication Approaches in University Counseling Centers

A university in the United States Mountain West utilized grant resources to track counseling services for students who were currently experiencing or who had historically experienced relationship violence, sexual assault and/or stalking. This report reflects on the first 2 years of this program, including an overview of prevalence and reporting rates of interpersonal violence from university students. Given the prevalence of recent and historic interpersonal violence among university students, suggestions are offered for bringing a trauma-informed and communication-focused perspective to the solution-focused brief therapy model used in many university counseling centers. A case study outlining these approaches is offered.     

Chinese Retirees' Learning Interests: A Qualitative Analysis

This paper reports the results of two semistructured focus group interviews with 17 retirees that explore the issues these retirees perceived as central to their learning in later life (LLL). Focus is especially placed on the factors leading to their learning interests after retirement. A total of six themes (past experience in adulthood and voluntary work, perception of learning, social support, living alone, self-efficacy, and openness) were identified to be related to learning interest in later life. This study has implications for future research and service planning of LLL in the Chinese population.     

Wellness Model of Supervision: A Comparative Analysis

This quasi‐experimental study compared the effectiveness of the Wellness Model of Supervision (WELMS; Lenz & Smith, 2010 ) with alternative supervision models for developing wellness constructs, total personal wellness, and helping skills among counselors‐in‐training. Participants were 32 master's‐level counseling students completing their internship requirements in a counseling program accredited by the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs. Results of a split plot analysis of variance indicated that participants in the WELMS condition increased their personal definitions of wellness and total wellness while developing their counseling skills at a similar level when compared with participants receiving other models of supervision.     

专业化:高校辅导员职业素质的提升

现代社会分工职业化要求、高等教育改革方向以及大学生群体特点决定了高校辅导员走专业化之路已势在必行。在这种形势下,有必要认真研究辅导员专业化的基本概念,明确高校辅导员专业化的标准、职业定位、管理模式、保障机制、健全培训体系等,从而从科学理论上对目前我国正在开展的辅导员专业化建设实践进行指导,以促进建设一支专业化、职业化、专家化的辅导员队伍。
