A solid understanding of inferential statistics is of major importance for designing and interpreting empirical results in any scientific discipline. However, students are prone to many misconceptions regarding this topic. This article structurally summarizes and describes these misconceptions by presenting a systematic review of publications that provide empirical evidence of them. This group of publications was found to be dispersed over a wide range of specialized journals and proceedings, and the methodology used in the empirical studies was very diverse. Three research needs rise from this review: (1) further empirical studies that identify the sources and possible solutions for misconceptions in order to complement the abundant theoretical and statistical discussion about them; (2) new insights into effective research designs and methodologies to perform this type of research; and (3) structured and systematic summaries of findings like the one presented here, concerning misconceptions in other areas of statistics, that might be of interest both for educational researchers and teachers of statistics.  相似文献

This article considers being inspired by statistics as both a learner and a teacher. It looks particularly at a task involving research of Minard's Map, a statistical representation, to create and present a statistical task for a learner. It describes how the use of imagery, and the enthusiasm that developed as the map and its context were explored by the teacher, were passed on to the learner.  相似文献

Histograms are widely used and appear easy to understand. Research nevertheless indicates that students, teachers and researchers often misinterpret these graphical representations. Hence, the research question addressed in this paper is: What are the conceptual difficulties that become manifest in the common misinterpretations people have when constructing or interpreting histograms? To identify these conceptual difficulties, we conducted a narrative systematic literature review and identified 86 publications reporting or containing misinterpretations. The misinterpretations were clustered and—through abduction—connected to difficulties with statistical concepts. The analysis revealed that most of these conceptual difficulties relate to two big ideas in statistics: data (e.g., number of variables and measurement level) and distribution (shape, centre and variability or spread). These big ideas are depicted differently in histograms compared to, for example, case-value plots. Our overview can help teachers and researchers to address common misinterpretations more generally instead of remediating them each individually.  相似文献

在介绍应用统计学专业设置的背景和徐州工程学院应用统计学专业建设的基础上,以徐州工程学院为例,从三个方面介绍了如何加强应用型本科院校应用统计学专业的实践教学体系建设,以提高学生的统计实践与解决实际问题的能力。首先,应当充分利用学校的统计相关实验室和校外实践教学基地;其次,应当提高实践教学学分,以主流的统计软件来贯通相关的统计实践课程;最后,应当强化应用统计学专业和统计学学科建设一体化的实践教学体系建设思路,拓展应用统计学专业的实践应用领域。这为其他应用型本科院校的应用统计学专业实践教学建设提供一定的参考依据。  相似文献

In teaching introductory quantitative methods in sociology, I have used a controversial survey of mortality in Iraq before and after the 2003 invasion to highlight to students the power of simple questionnaires, the role of ambiguity in statistics and the place of politics in the framing of statistical results. This brief report summarizes Roberts et al.'s (2004) estimate that the invasion of Iraq resulted in 98,000 (95% CI = 8000–194,000) deaths, as well as the intriguing reaction that the survey received in the press. Statistics teachers should find the Roberts et al. study to be an effective way to introduce students to more controversial – and political – aspects of statistical research.  相似文献

The case study examined two groups of grade 7 students as they engaged in four inquiry phases: posing a question and collecting, analyzing, and representing data. Previous studies reported analyses of statistical reasoning on a single inquiry phase. Our goal was to identify the modes of statistical reasoning displayed during group discussions in all phases as children designed and conducted their own inquiry. A content analysis of audio and video recorded discussions yielded 10 statistical reasoning modes: six relate to Garfield and Gal’s [Garfield, J., Gal, I. (1999). Teaching and assessing statistical reasoning. In L. V. Stiff, & F. R. Curcio (Eds.), Developing mathematical reasoning in grades K-12. 1999 Yearbook (pp. 207–219). Reston, VA: National Council of Teachers of Mathematics] statistical reasoning types involved in the collection, analysis, and representation of data and four modes deal with an aspect of inquiry not exclusively focused upon in the literature on statistical reasoning—i.e., the problem-posing phase. Interpretation of correlation is often based on rules of thumb in which some boundary values are given to help decide whether correlation is non‐important, weak, strong or very strong. This article shows that such rules of thumb may do more harm than good, and instead of supporting interpretation of correlation – which is their aim – they teach a schematic approach to statistics.
