Examination of Cataloging Assessment Values Using the Q Sort Method

The intent of this project was to identify whether there is a gap between catalogers’ personal values related to cataloging assessment and their perceptions of their institutions’ values. This article uses Q methodology to contrast those perspectives. The Q-statements for this study were based on the discourse represented in a literature review of articles related to cataloging assessment. A factor analysis of Q-sorts was used to identify themes in participant perceptions. The patterns identified support the research question, while also suggesting that consensus may be built around the ideas of usability, service, and access.

图书馆自动化与网络化的迅速发展带来了编目数据源的多样化,图书编目数据源按利用率分为原始数据源和二次数据源,二次数据源又包括本地数据源、书商数据源、在版编目数据源、OPAC数据源以及联机联合编目数据源。在LIBSYS 5.0编目系统中,原始数据源是基础,联机联合编目数据源是主体,书商数据源和本地数据源是补充,其他数据源是参考,各种数据源在检索和应用中有其自身特点又相互关联。中国OCLC建成后将成为我国最大的编目数据源。     

Empowering Student Assistants in the Cataloging Department through Innovative Training: The E-Learning Courseware for Basic Cataloging (ECBC) Project

ABSTRACT

This article investigates an innovative approach to training non-traditional employees, particularly student workers, in a library's cataloging department. The author presents guidelines and pedagogical aspects of designing e-learning courseware for basic cataloging training, reviews some challenges and difficulties encountered in the project, and introduces the content and structure of prototype 2 of the courseware. This e-learning courseware for basic cataloging can be adapted to facilitate the training of other groups of new staff in the cataloging department.     

The Impact of AACR2 on Cataloging in Chinese Libraries

This article provides a brief overview of the characteristics of catalog systems as well as the development of Western language material cataloging in Chinese libraries. On the basis of historical overview and analysis, the authors discuss the impact of AACR2 on Chinese libraries and conclude that the Western language material cataloging in Chinese libraries belongs in the Anglo-American system. It is also suggested that a positive attitude should be taken by Chinese librarians on the research and development of AACR2 to suit the Chinese situation in order to achieve a good advanced step.

Chronology in Cataloging Chinese Archaeological Reports: An Investigation of Cultural Bias in the Library of Congress Classification

This article first examines cultural limitations embedded in the Eurocentric Library of Congress Classification and calls for catalogers' sensitivity to authors' cultural background while cataloging the Bronze China archaeological materials. It then discusses the ambiguity in Library of Congress Subject Headings Manual H1225 and presents a debate on the necessity of including Chinese dynastic information in constructing subject headings through comparing facets extracted from this manual and title patterns of Chinese archaeological reports. Furthermore, this article elaborates the significance of the chronological issue from three different perspectives: Faceted Application of Subject Terminology headings, local library users' need, and next-generation catalogs.     

Purpose-driven Assessment of Cataloging and Metadata Services: Transforming Broken Links into Linked Data

Abstract

In response to the impact of emerging technologies, this article examines the relationship between strategic planning and the assessment methodologies of cataloging and metadata services and explores (or “suggests” if appropriate) how to assess cataloging and metadata activities more effectively and relevantly. Besides literature review, the author conducted surveys for more than seventy librarians and follow-up interviews with three library administrators. The results indicate the gap between strategic planning and assessment for cataloging and metadata services, and identify the significance of impact and users’ needs in strategic planning for the assessment of cataloging and metadata services. These elements are critical in transforming the broken links in the current cataloging assessment into a purpose-driven assessment corresponding to users’ needs and evolving technologies.

A New Cataloging Curriculum in a Time of Innovation: Exploring a Modular Approach to Online Delivery

Cataloging librarianship has a tradition of innovation. Currently, professional and instructional innovations must be considered in a new Cataloging curriculum. Using as a framework Rogers’ Diffusion of Innovation, this reflective study explores one solution being considered at the University of Missouri while revising the Cataloging curriculum. A balance between theory and practice is suggested through the establishment of a set of core theoretical topics to be covered in the first part of the Cataloging class; Web-based modular elements to be covered in the second part will focus on cataloging practice in specific kinds of libraries.     

An Examination of the Practical and Ethical Issues Surrounding False Memoirs in Cataloging Practice

False memoirs are, in essence, autobiographical works that are presented initially as nonfiction, but are proven to be entirely or partially fabricated. These works are described as nonfiction when they are cataloged initially, but when the controversy surrounding them comes to light, there is uncertainty about what, if anything, to do about the contents of the bibliographic record if the work is retained in the collection. This study examines the practical concerns of cataloging false memoirs, such as changing the class number, modifying subject headings, and adding notes, as well as the ethical implications of these actions.
