Two experiments were conducted to examine the effects of redundant and relevant visual cues on spatial pattern learning. Rats searched for hidden food items on the tops of poles that formed a square (Experiment 1) or a checkerboard (Experiment 2) pattern. The experimental groups were trained with visual cues that specified the locations of the baited poles. All groups were tested without visual cues so that any overshadowing or facilitation of spatial pattern learning by visual cues could be detected. Spatial choices were controlled by the spatial pattern and by the visual cues in both experiments. However, there was no evidence of overshadowing or facilitation of spatial pattern learning by visual cues in either experiment. The results are consistent with the idea that the representation of the spatial pattern that guides choices is not controlled by the same learning processes as those that produce associations between visual cues and food locations.  相似文献

Rats were given three stages of training on an eight-arm, elevated radial maze with food reward at the end of each arm. In Stage 1, rats were allowed to choose freely among the arms from the beginning of a trial. In Stage 2, three initial forced choices were followed by a series of free choices. In Stage 3, the central platform of the maze was rotated with the rat on it between the initial forced choices and the free choices. Following testing on these three stages, the animals were divided into four groups and deprived of selected senses. One group was made blind, a second anosmic, a third blind and anosmic, and a fourth was left normal. The same three stages of testing that had been conducted preoperatively then were run again post-operatively. Throughout these tests, the possible use of auditory cues was tested by presenting white noise on alternate trials. Finally, two further tests were carried out, the multiple rotations test and the removal-replacement test. The results indicated that visual cues, but not olfactory or auditory cues, played a critical role in the rat’s ability to avoid previously entered alleys. There was evidence also that rats used internal cues from kinesthetic and/or vestibular receptors when visual cues were absent.  相似文献

The cognitive mechanisms involved in spatial choice when access to visual cues is restricted were examined in three experiments using male rats. A specially constructed radial-arm maze was used, in which extramaze visual cues could not be perceived from the central arena, but could be perceived from the maze arms. Choices were very accurate when the maze was not rotated during each trial, but inaccurate when the maze was rotated. This suggests that intramaze cues were involved in the control of choices. However, the data clearly showed that choices were not simply controlled by intramaze cues. Rather, control by intramaze cues interacted in a more complex manner with representations of the spatial locations of goals. Such spatial representations were involved in the control of choice despite the absence of visual spatial cues at the time choices were made.  相似文献

Rats obtained food from the tops of vertical poles in a 5 × 5 matrix of locations. On each trial, the baited locations formed one of the two possible exemplars of a checkerboard spatial pattern. During training, locations that had been visited earlier in the trial were indicated by a visual cue. Following training, performance with and without the visual cues was compared. Spatial choices were controlled by the checkerboard spatial pattern. The visual cues enhanced the ability of rats to avoid revisits of locations. However, the visual cues did not enhance control by the spatial pattern, as would be expected if the same spatial memories were involved in avoidance of revisits and coding the location of baited locations.  相似文献

Pigeons were trained to symbolically match comparison stimuli to either visual sample stimuli presented on a center key or to spatial sample stimuli presented on side keys. Tests were carried out in which visual and spatial cues were simultaneously presented in compound and short-term memory was probed for either visual or spatial information. Symmetrical interference with the matching of visual and spatial components of compounds was found when the visual and spatial cues were presented on separate keys. However, when visual and spatial cues were superimposed on the same side key, no interference was observed relative to element control tests. Discussion of these findings focuses on accounts in terms of limited processing capacity, coding decrement, and receptor orientation mechanisms.  相似文献

Experiments were designed in which some properties of spatial representations in rats could be examined. Adult subjects were trained to escape through a hole at a fixed position in a large circular arena (see Schenk, 1989). The experiments were conducted in the dark, with a limited number of controlled visual light cues, in order to assess the minimal cue requirement for place learning. Three light cues identical in shape, height, and distance from the table were used. Depending on the condition, they were either permanently on or alternatively on or off, contingent on the position of the rat in the field. Two questions were asked: (1) How many identical visual cues were necessary for spatial discrimination in the dark, and (2) could rats integrate the relative positions of separate cues, under conditions in which the rat was never allowed to perceive all three cues simultaneously. The results suggest that rats are able to achieve a place discrimination task even if the three cues necessary for efficient orientation can never be seen simultaneously. A dissociation between the discrimination of the spatial position of the goal and the capacity to reach it by a direct path suggests that, with a reduced number of cues, prolonged locomotion might be required for accurate orientation in the environment.  相似文献

A dishabituation paradigm was used to study hamsters’ memory for the spatial arrangement of olfactory cues. In Experiment 1, the animals dishabituated to a change in the positions of two different olfactory cues, but this experience did not reveal whether the response was based on egocentric (body-centered) or allocentric (body-independent) spatial information. In Experiment 2, the same dishabituation resulted when the experimental procedure required the animals to use spatial information that was independent of body position. Thus, hamsters remember the locations of olfactory cues with reference to a stable spatial framework. The dishabituation paradigm used here is a valuable tool for the study of animal spatial cognition, since it requires no explicit training and allows each animal to be tested in a relatively short experimental session.  相似文献

Control exerted by different categories of spatial information on short-distance return to shelter by young cockroach larvae and weighting of different information sources in conflict situations were investigated. In the absence of landmark cues, larvae preferred information given by path integration with kinesthetic cues over scototactic cues. When two landmark cues with a particular angular position between them were shifted 180°, larvae relied on these learned landmarks provided that their relative angular position was kept unchanged. When only one of the landmark cues was shifted 180°, larvae preferred to use the path integration system. When larvae could not use path integration cues, a modified configuration of the landmarks disturbed them. They relied on scototactic cues, although some seemed to rely on either one of the landmarks to find their shelter. Cockroaches could change the order of importance that they normally attributed to certain classes of spatial information (in increasing order: scototaxis, path integration, and learned visual landmarks) in relation to ongoing conditions.  相似文献

In Experiment 1, hamsters started from their permanent home at the periphery of a circular arena and headed to a food source at the center. They then returned, fully laden with food, along a direct path to their home. On control trials, in which no manipulation takes place, visual cues outside the arena and dead reckoning (i.e., updated internal references generated during the outward journey to the food source) controlled the return journey. On experimental trials, the arena, with the hamster in its nest, was rotated by 90°, putting dead reckoning at variance with the distal visual environment. The animals were rewarded for going with dead reckoning. At first, they favored the distal cues, but later most of the subjects switched to using dead reckoning. Thus, hamsters are flexible enough to recalibrate the relative weight that they normally attribute to different sets of spatial cues. In Experiment 2, the reliance on dead-reckoning was greatly enhanced when a cue card at the nest entrance was rotated along with the arena, pitting one proximal cue plus dead reckoning against distal cues. Hence, dead reckoning and external cues seem to reinforce each other through their mutual correlation.  相似文献

Two passerine species, black-capped chickadees (Parus atricapillus, a food-storing bird) and darkeyed juncos (Junco hyemalis, a nonstoring bird) were compared in a task in which they inspected four feeders in an aviary. Different feeders and different spatial locations were used on each trial. One of the feeders was baited. The subjects returned after a 5-min retention interval to find the baited feeder. Tests with transformations of the feeder array made it possible to determine what cues controlled the food-finding behavior. Chickadees responded to spatial cues preferentially over local color and pattern cues associated with the feeder (Experiments 2–4). The same ordering of responding was found in Experiment 1, a food-storing version of the food-finding task outlined above. Experiment 5 tested juncos on the food-finding task. Juncos responded to all types of information equally. The results are discussed in relation to the notion that because of their food-storing lifestyle, chickadees may need to rely more heavily on spatial cues than do juncos.  相似文献

Social memory was investigated in the context of a spatial working memory task. Pairs of rats were tested in an eight-arm radial maze. Under most conditions, there was a tendency to choose maze locations that had been visited earlier by the other rat. The possibility that this tendency is produced by common preferences for particular maze locations was ruled out. An opposite tendency to avoid visits to locations that had been visited earlier during the trial by another rat was found only when the maze location contained two pellets (rather than an undepletable supply), the rats’ ability to see each other in the maze was restricted to the central arena, and the maze location had been previously visited by the focal rat. The amount of food available in maze locations did not otherwise modulate social influences on spatial choice. The results indicate that memory for a rat’s own previous choices is combined with memory for the choices made by another rat.  相似文献

Shortcut ability in hamsters was tested in a complex wheel-shaped maze, in which kinesthetic information could be associated with environmental (proximal and/or distal) cues. The hamsters, previously trained to reach a hidden goal by a circumferential route, were led to the center of the maze to test their ability to take a directional shortcut to that same goal. In Experiment 1, their ability to accurately take a straight-line shortcut to the goal (from among eight possible paths) when distal cues were available was demonstrated. In Experiment 2, environmental information was neutralized in some conditions in order to enhance the relevance of kinesthetic information. When circumferential training runs were not too complex, the hamsters could use kinesthetic information—“path integration” processes—integrated during their previous training to infer the direction of the hidden goal.  相似文献

Hooded rats were reared in very restricted environments with angular, curved, or white-field stimulation. The extent of transfer from this exposure was assessed in adulthood by testing subjects for (a) learning ability in form, brightness, and pattern discrimination tasks, and (b) exploration and activity differences in an open field. The angle-reared group performed better than the other two rearing groups in all three discrimination tasks. Moreover, the curved and white-field groups were equivalent. These learning differences did not appear to result from differences in (a) exploration or activity or (b) dependence on kinesthetic cues. The results demonstrated that one type of early visual stimulation produced transfer to discrimination tasks that varied in difficulty and in degree of relevancy to the rearing forms. This effect was related to the results and interpretations from previous form-rearing studies. Three interpretations were proposed for this transfer and for the advantage of angular vs. curved stimulation.  相似文献

Rats trained in one context to use stimuli arising from food deprivation as discriminative signals for shock were tested in other contexts to assess the basis of conditioned responding (i.e., freezing or behavioral immobility). In Experiment 1, discriminative control by 24-h food-deprivation cues failed to promote transfer responding in a test context that had no association with shock. This indicated that food deprivation cues had little direct excitatory power. However, transfer of behavioral control by 24-h food-deprivation cues was obtained in a context paired with shock only when the rats were 19 h water deprived. This finding agrees with the idea that food-deprivation cues become conditioned modulators of the capacity of external stimuli to activate their association with an unconditioned stimulus. In Experiment 2, rats trained to use 24-h food-deprivation cues as signals for shock exhibited significantly greater transfer performance when the transfer context had undergone partial extinction relative to when the transfer context had undergone only simple excitatory training. This finding with deprivation cues and transfer contexts (1) paralleled earlier results obtained with discrete (auditory and visual) conditioned modulators and transfer targets, and (2) posed difficulties for associative summation and generalization interpretations of transfer performance.  相似文献

The present study examined developmental differences in the effect of route extensity on the memory for the locations of objects in a spatial array. Kindergarten and adult subjects were trained to remember the locations of 4 objects. During this training, objects were either connected by a combination of indirect, looped train tracks and direct train tracks (experimental subjects) or connected by entirely direct train-track routes (control subjects). Analyses of actual interobject distances, from subjects' reproductions of object locations on a response board (without train tracks), revealed that children, but not adults, distort distance in terms of the nature of travel observed between objects. Further testing revealed that differences in the amount of time taken for travel could not account for the results obtained with children.  相似文献

Willson and Wilkie (1993) developed a novel procedure for assessing pigeons’ memory for the spatial location of food. Only one of four locations (consisting of an illuminated pecking key and grain feeder) provided food each day. Over days, different locations provided food. The pigeons’ tendency to revisit the location that was profitable on the previous day demonstrated memory for food-spatiallocation associations over a period of 24 h, retention longer than previously reported for this species. This basic finding was replicated and extended in three experiments. Experiment 1 demonstrated that location-food discriminations were also remembered well when established with successive rather than concurrent procedures. Experiment 2 demonstrated that pigeons can remember two location-food associations over 24 h. Experiment 3 showed that the discrimination training inherent in this paradigm is important for retention; retention was impaired when only the rewarded location was presented. Overall, this research suggests that cross-species differences in spatial memory performance may be due to quantitative rather than qualitative differences in the memory system underlying performance.  相似文献

This article reviews the literature and presents data from our laboratories on sensory deprivation stress and supplemental stimulation of the rat pup and the preterm neonate. The data suggest that the effects of maternal deprivation in the rat pup (suppression of growth hormone release and protein synthesis) are regulated by a specific form of tactile stimulation: only brush stroking of maternally deprived rat pups returned growth parameters to normal; other forms of stimulation, including kinesthetic and vestibular stimulation, were ineffective in restoring normal functions. Other data are presented demonstrating that very small preterm neonates given tactile-kinesthetic stimulation gain more weight per day, spend more time awake and active, and show more mature habituation, orientation, motor, and range of state behaviors on the Brazelton assessment.  相似文献

Treatments that interfere with animals’ short-term retention (e.g., in delayed matching-to-sample) were studied using a spatial memory task. Rats performed in an eight-arm radial maze in which choosing each arm without repetition was the optimal behavior. Performances were interrupted between fourth and fifth choices for a delay of 15 sec to 2 min. A variety of events occurring during the delay interval did not disrupt memories for prior choices (as assessed by the accuracy of postdelay choices). The ineffective treatments included variations in visual and auditory environments, removal from the maze, food consumed during the delay, a distinctive odor added to the maze, or combinations of these manipulations. Additionally, performance on another spatial task (a four-arm maze) during the delay between Choices 4 and 5 did not interfere with performance in the eight-arm maze. These findings suggest that rats’ memories for spatial locations are immune to retroactive interference, at least within the range of conditions reported, and that the rat can successfully segregate memories for spatial locations established in different contexts.  相似文献

Rats collected nuts from a container in a large arena in four experiments testing how learning about a beacon or cue at a goal interacts with learning about other spatial cues (place learning). Place learning was quick, with little evidence of competition from the beacon (Experiments 1 and 2). Rats trained to approach a beacon regardless of its location were subsequently impaired when the well-learned beacon was removed and other spatial cues identified the location of the goal (Experiment 3). The competition between beacon and place cues reflected learned irrelevance for place cues (Experiment 4). The findings differ from those of some studies of associative interactions between cue and place learning in other paradigms.  相似文献

This study investigated the learning styles of adult English as a second language (ESL) students in Northwest Arkansas. Learning style differences by age, gender, and country of origin were explored. A total of 69 northwest Arkansas adult ESL students attending 7 adult-education centers were administered the VARK Learning Styles Questionnaire. Most participants came from Mexico and El Salvador, their ages ranged from 23 to 45, and females were an average of 10 years older than males. Note taking was chosen by 1/3 of participants as their favorite learning style, 20% favored aural modes, 15% favored kinesthetic, 4% favored visual, and 15% chose combinations of learning styles. Females chose auditory and multimodal learning styles, while males favored note taking. Students differed by level of English proficiency, beginning-intermediate favoring aural learning styles more than advanced students. ANOVA results indicated that participants were significantly less visual and more read-write than either aural or kinesthetic, but males and females differed significantly in their choice of aural learning. Hispanic males chose note taking and kinesthetic learning styles significantly more than visual or auditory modes of learning. Hispanic females chose note taking, aural, and kinesthetic learning styles significantly more than visual. Asian males favored note taking and aural learning. Correlation was found between age and learning styles with subgroups exhibiting a negative correlation between age and kinesthetic learning, with Mexican males and females exhibiting the strongest negative correlation. Males showed a low positive correlation between age and note taking.  相似文献
