New Policies Adopted to Revive Intangible Cultural Heritage

At the quarterly news conference of the Ministry of Culture of China （MOC） in August, Ma Shengde, vice director-general respon- sible for intangible cultural heritage af- fairs released MOC＇s new approach- es and policies for the better protection and continuation of intangible cultur- al heritage. Ma said that these new mea- sures include producing documentaries by using literature kept in storehouses and archives, encouraging ICH and folk art showcases and performances at local houses of culture and squares, and im- proving the development oflCH-relat- ed derivative products, with an aim to revive ICH elements and make them an integrated part of people＇s lifestyle.

Stairway to Heaven Honghe Hani Terrace Inscribed as World Heritage Site

Honghe Hani Terrace in Yunnan Province was inducted into UNESCO＇s World Heritage List at the World Heritage Committee＇s 37th session held on June 22nd, 2013 in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. Honghe Hani terrace originates from 1300 years ago. Named after the people living here, it renders a perfect presentation of the distinct wisdom of people farming in the mountainous areas.     

Perspectives on Sustainable Conservation of Cultural Heritage

UNESCO has recently warned the French Government that the Lascaux Cave would be listed as a World Heritage in Danger if no effective measures were taken in half a year to prevent its cave paintings from fungi attack. Cave paintings in the Lascaux Cave were of the greatest importance for the history of prehistoric art. Ironically, however, the threats that these cave paintings are faced now were caused by protection measures, In order to reduce temperature and humidity, an air conditioning system was installed in the cave. But soon after the system was installed, white fungus appeared on cave tops and wails. Last year, fungi attacked the cave again. Gray black fungi in various sizes formed on cave walls, which brought serious damage to scenes of those cave paintings.

A Glimpse of Intangible Cultural Heritage in Hong Kong and Macau

The Yu Lan Ghost Festival of Hang Kong Chiu Chow Community Around 1.2 million people originating from Chiu Chow （Chaozhou） in Chi- na ＇s Guangdong province live in Hong Kong.
