The promised land of blended learning: Quizzes as a moderator

Blended learning, defined as a combination of face-to-face and online learning, is expected to lead to improved education. Besides, practical reasons, like increased access to education and resource management, are mentioned for its implementation. To examine whether the expectation of improved education is met, meta-analyses were conducted. They revealed that, on average, blended learning is somewhat more effective than more traditional learning. Additionally, students evaluated it as equally attractive, but seemed to perceive it as more demanding. In sum, blended learning is equal, or maybe even better, than more traditional learning. However, the effects on effectiveness, attractiveness and perceived demands differed much between studies. Moderator analyses found that quizzes positively affect the effectiveness and attractiveness of blended learning. Concluding, blended learning has potential to improve education, when thoughtfully designed, for example by the inclusion of frequent quizzes.     

Quizzes Used in Oral English Assessment in EFL

In order to find out the best way to assess students’ oral achievement and to see if quiz can be used as a valid measurement of oral ability,we conducted an experiment.Quizzes were given to students each week.The results of final exam and that of quizzes were compared to see if there is discrepancy between the two.The results of our experiment showed a high correlation between students’ quiz scores and exam scores.The class teacher can very well predict how a student will perform in the final exam.A way to assess students’ oral achievement is also suggested.     

Interactive Learning Using Expert System Quizzes on the Internet

Abstracts

English: HTML and JavaScript web pages interactively pose questions at random with multiple choice answers. Questions are ranked for difficulty based on prior student tests. During a quiz, the system tracks the percentage of correct answers and adjusts the difficulty of questions appropriately. A compiled BASIC program allows teachers to make specialized web quizzes from text files of questions and answers, without needing to know HTML, JavaScript and BASIC programming languages.

Impact of Positive Interdependence During Electronic Quizzes on Discourse and Achievement

Abstract

The authors examined the effects of positive interdependence vs. no interdependence on students' academic achievement. Participants included 151 U.S. college students who took weekly electronic quizzes on which they could interact with group mates in a chat room. In the positive interdependence condition, 1 member was chosen at random, and his or her score was given to all members of the group. In the no-interdependence condition, each group member received his or her own score on each quiz. Achievement was measured by biweekly examinations that students took by themselves and that produced their own independent scores. Students in the positive-interdependence condition engaged in significantly more interaction and more promotive interaction while taking the electronic quizzes and achieved higher scores on the subsequent examinations taken individually.

Laptops as Instructional Tools: Student Perceptions

For six years, a college of health professions at a southern medical university has made student computing an integral component of its academic environment by requiring all residential students to own laptops. While most faculty members have acknowledged that access to a computer is necessary for most students to complete coursework, both faculty members and students have commented that a laptop requirement has its drawbacks. Focus groups, survey, and classroom observation were conducted involving students to examine how laptops have been employed as instructional tools. Results revealed student perceptions of uses, benefits, drawbacks, and ways to improve, and important policy implications are discussed.
