A Comparison of Binding Styles and Usage Levels of Engineering Titles at Leeds and Cornell Universities

This paper relates the levels of usage of matching engineering titles at Leeds and Cornell universities to the different styles of binding used and the way in which the bindings wear with use.

The paper compares from 3 phases of professional work, finance and personnel affairs management, the similarities and differences of Chinese library administration with those of the United States. At the end of the paper, the author records the code of conduct both for the library authorities and the librarians under the leadership of them. This plays an enlightening role for improving the Chinese library administration.

Building a Serials Database on NOTIS at the University of Louisville

The implementation of the NOTIS system at the University of Louisville Libraries has introduced various changes to Serials cataloging in Ekstrom Library. An initial goal was to provide a clean database, containing all currently received serial titles. The decision by Ekstrom Library to maintain a permanent order record on the current title necessitates frequent record manipulation as serial titles change. Bibliographic records are overlaid, which requires correcting copy holdings records and moving item records. Procedures within the Serials Section continue to change as staff work to provide a complete database of serial holdings.     

Using Piwik Instead of Google Analytics at the Cornell University Library

Like many other libraries, Cornell University Library uses Google Analytics (GA) to track website usage. GA, designed to support Google’s primary revenue stream, advertising, has many strengths, including cost (free). Given our tradition in libraries to protect reader privacy, a compelling argument can be made that Google Analytics is inappropriate for libraries. After a review of alternatives to GA following Edward Snowden's revelations, we selected Piwik (piwik.org) as a replacement for GA. Piwik is a free, open source, and most importantly, supports local data collection. We summarize what some of the library literature says about web analytics tools, explain why we selected Piwik, and describe what is involved when migrating from GA to Piwik.

The Evolution of the Serials Unit at California State University,Fullerton

Any notion of cancelling very expensive American and European science journals in order to subscribe to Japanese titles is shown to be questionable. Analysis of the published output of several firms and universities, sampling from dozens of journals, and examination of thousands of articles and citations suggest that with a few exceptions, the Japanese themselves place primary emphasis on appearing in these same, very expensive, highly cited American and European titles. While the Japanese do have journals well worth acquiring, their acquisition must be funded by other means.
