“And Other Duties as Assigned”: Expanding the Boundaries of the E- resource Lifecycle to Get Things Done

This presentation focused on how elements of the electronic resource lifecycle, such as those described in the NASIG Core Competencies for Electronic Resource Librarians and the Techniques for Electronic Resource Management, apply to the management of physical library projects, including the weeding and shifting of physical collections, a digitization project, as well as other “duties as assigned” that are part of the average librarian’s workload at a small library. Additionally, this presentation touched on issues related to managing print and electronic collections in law libraries.

本文针对电子期刊在高校图书馆馆藏份额中不断增加的趋势,阐述了电子期刊组织的必要性及电子期刊组织的形式,并通过对北京市30所高校图书馆的调查,分析了北京市高校图书馆电子期刊组织和整合的现状以及存在的问题,提出了相应的解决思路和建议。     

TaBaMLN Keeps on Ramblin’: The Evolution of the Tampa Bay Medical Library Network

The Tampa Bay Medical Library Network, also known as TaBaMLN, has been an invaluable organization for central Florida medical librarians for over 35 years. The goals and activities of this group, as well as the membership, have changed and evolved over the years, but one thing remains: This consortium is an integral part of the medical library landscape for the Tampa Bay area and beyond and provides its members with resources, networking, and continuing education. This article addresses the evolution of this important group from 1975 to the present day.

Alma������Դ��������ݡ����̼�ԭ��̽��:ʵ����˼��

��[Purpose/significance] Alma, the next generation library service platform, has truly realized the unified platform management of printing, electronic and digital resources in a practical sense. In particular, electronic resources have been managed by platform instead of manual operation. Exploring and studying the content, process and principles of electronic resource management in Alma are crucial for high-quality management.[Method/process] The work content, process and principles of Alma's electronic resource management were continuously explored and analyzed in usual work, and the actual situation of library and platform functions were also combined, and finally the experience and methods were formed, which can be used to guide and support the library to use Alma to manage the life cycle of electronic resources.[Result/conclusion] The management of electronic resources by using the next generation library service platform requires clear working principles, contents and process management, and the combination of the actual situation of the library and the functions of the platform in the formulation process can achieve twice the result with half the effort and better management of electronic resources.

Outreach marketing may be a successful strategy for NHS libraries

This dissertation study investigates the ways that NHS libraries are currently marketing their services within their organisation and was submitted as part of the MA Library and Information Management at the University of Sheffield in 2019. This paper presents the findings from twelve semi‐structured interviews carried out with NHS library managers in the East of England to identify the most and least successful methods, and in comparison with that which is currently in the general marketing literature. The study found that outreach marketing was the most effective and that librarians are currently conducting marketing to the best of their ability, but they lack time and funding to be able to make the most of their promotional campaigns. Consortial Cataloging Guidelines for Electronic Resources: I-Share Survey and Recommendations

In 2009, the Consortium of Academic and Research Libraries in Illinois (CARLI) charged a task force to update and revise recommendations that address cataloging practice and catalog access to electronic resources for libraries participating in the I-Share union catalog. This article presents the results of a survey and recommendations developed by the 2009 Task Force that cover all types of e-resources. Issues covered include: single or separate records for electronic and print versions of a title; the use of aggregator-neutral and provider neutral records; the construction and placement of the Uniform Resource Locator (URL) and notes; and the use of vendor records.     

Electronic Reserve on a Regional Campus: The Evolution of the Service

Since the introduction of university regional campuses in Ohio, providing library services has been challenging. Because of new technologies, restricted budgets, and fewer staff, even recently implemented methods and procedures must be reexamined and revised. This article provides an overview of one regional campus library's evolving relationship with the main campus during the implementation and evolution of an electronic reserve system. The history and current use of a course management system is discussed along with the challenges faced by staff in the evolution of reserve services.     

No Substantial Penalty for Withdrawal: The PALCI Shared Print Journal Archive

The Pennsylvania Academic Library Consortium (PALCI) has developed a shared print archive, an archive that promises to maintain rarely used print journals from noted scientific society publishers for a ten year period. The goals for this collaborative project are to ensure access to commonly held print journal titles, to allow libraries to withdraw materials so they may re-purpose valuable space, and to share the responsibility of storing print titles at individual institutions instead of requiring a centralized storage facility. This paper discusses the grassroots origins for this project and the process decisions involved in turning the archive from vision into reality.

Abstract

Vendor-supplied e-resource statistics are often unavailable, unreliable, or not comparable across vendors. This study compared locally generated usage statistics to those supplied by four major publishers, and analyzed the resulting patterns of use. The additional information provided by vendor statistics was assessed to see how it might be utilized selectively to provide a better understanding of the importance of individual titles. The local statistics for all titles provided by the four publishers were then compared. A strong similarity between the two datasets was found, supporting the position that local statistics are a viable alternative to vendor statistics. Another finding was that the 80/20 rule is closer to 80/30 in the online environment. Some of the issues for subject librarians and electronic resources librarians are discussed.     

Analyzing Digital Library Initiatives: 5S Theory Perspective

This article traces the historical development of Digital Libraries (DLs), examines some DL initiatives in developed and developing countries and uses 5S Theory as a lens for analyzing the focused DLs. The analysis shows that present-day systems, in both developed and developing nations, are essentially content and user centric, with low level digitization projects in developing countries. Also, there is a lack of interoperability among the various types of DL initiatives. The article recommends investment in DL projects, digitization of print collection, as well as the development of standards that will address the problem of interoperability among the various systems.
