Marketing Videos in Academic Libraries:

In some libraries, the video collection is not accessible to browsing patrons and is overlooked as an information source. To publicize Stetson University Library's video collection, staff sent annotated subject bibliographies of video titles to faculty. To generate the bibliographies, staff created a database and sorted the records into bibliographies for each department. Faculty received subject bibliographies relevant to the classes taught each semester. During the first month of the project's implementation, video circulation increased significantly over the pervious year's level and faculty reaction was positive.

Louisiana Academic Libraries

Abstract

The state of Louisiana has a long history of consortial activities among academic libraries. Having this infrastructure in place contributed to the ease of creation of a distance library services network that includes both public and private universities. This paper traces the history of academic library consortia in Louisiana, and provides methodologies and results of several surveys of distance education students. The results of a survey currently being conducted are forthcoming.

The Nevada Academic Libraries Information System:

The libraries of the six campuses of the University and Community College System of Nevada (UCCSN), in collaboration with UCCSN System computing Services, have developed and implemented a service that provides local and remote networked information resources to faculty, students, and citizens of Nevada through a single point of access. The service, called the Nevada Academic Libraries Information System (NALIS), uses the existing telecommunications infrastructure on the campuses and builds on the library automation programs already present in the libraries. This article explains how the NALIS system evolved through a combination of local circumstances and funding opportunities, describes the components of NALIS, and discusses ongoing issues and future planning related to providing networked information resources.

Journals for Academic Veterinary Medical Libraries:

This is the ninth annual price study based on the "Basic List of Veterinary Medical Serials, 2nd edition." The basic list consists of three parts: core veterinary titles; an adjunct list of serials in biomedical and life sciences; and a list of relevant abstract and index titles. Prices are supplied by The Faxon Company. The indexing base is 1983. In the twelve year period from 1983-1994 the average price of titles in the core + adjunct lists rose from $100.37 to $305.69. The price index rose 204.55 percentage points, an average increase per year of 18.60%. The average price of litles in the core list rose from $69.07 to $205.82. The price index in his category rose 197.97 percentage points, an average of 18% per year. The average price of the 85 titles on the adjunct core list was $131.30 in 1983 and $404.39 in 1994. The price index in this category rose 207.98 percentage points, an average of 18.91 % per year. The 22 selected abstract and index titles in his same twelve year period increased in average price from $618.74 to $1,465.50. The index in this category rose 136.85% for an average annual increase of only 12.44%, considerably less than the other lists.

Evaluating Library Instruction in Academic Libraries:

This study reviews the literature on the evaluation of bibliographic instruction in academic libraries from 1980 to 1993. Four main issues are discussed: (1) the reasons why librarians are evaluating, (2) to what degree they are evaluating, (3) what specific aspects they are evaluating, and (4) which methodologies are being used. Results indicate that, despite a growing interest in the evaluation of bibliographic instruction, the same pattern of limited systematic evaluation identified in 1980 continues to exist. Barriers to the successful implementation of evaluation, as well as possible directions for the future, are also presented.     

Ebooks in Academic Libraries

Abstract

The number of ebooks continues to grow in academic libraries. Ebooks have many advantages that make them attractive as a library resource. However, ebooks also have restrictions. These include use and sharing restrictions, license restrictions, and technological barriers. Some students also prefer print books for specific tasks. The following articles examine many aspects of ebooks in academic libraries, including student preference, overall ebook use, and the advantages and disadvantages of various ebook acquisition models.     

Academic Libraries in Japan

Academic libraries in Japan are well resourced by international standards, and support Japan’s internationally recognized research capability well, but there are also ways in which they reflect Japan’s strong bureaucratic culture. Recent changes to the status of national university libraries have seen a new interest in customer service, and service quality development. Potential changes in education for librarianship and an organisational focus on staff training and development are likely to enhance service delivery in Japanese academic libraries.

追求超越:研究图书馆的新挑战

[目的/意义]近年来，随着图情业务发展的不断融合和延伸，图书馆这一职业的边界也变得更加模糊，不仅与其他职业交往加深，而且逐步渗透到如信息咨询、数据分析、出版传播等其他职业领域。探讨研究图书馆面临的新挑战具有重要意义。[方法/过程]从图书馆与上述三个职业之间的关系出发，从研究图书馆的角度，探讨图书馆的业务如何从参考服务到研究咨询服务、从基于书刊到数据驱动、从收藏到出版的进一步延伸，研究转型给图书馆发展带来的新挑战与新机遇。[结果/结论]研究图书馆要在转型中扮演领头作用，致力于探索和发展研究咨询服务、数据驱动服务和学术交流传播服务。

指出图书馆系统的效益评价是图书馆工作科学化、计量化的基础和保证;阐述高校图书馆系统效益评价的概念及意义;论述图书馆系统效益评价的可能性和必要性;分析当前图书馆系统的效益评价模式;结合高校图书馆建筑和设备的投入成本和产出效益对图书馆系统的效益结构进行初步探索。     

国内外高校图书馆嵌入式教学案例比较研究

嵌入式教学是把信息素养教育融入院系专业课程的教学新模式,是图书馆深化用户服务的重要工作.文章采用比较分析法分别对国内外15所知名高校图书馆嵌入式教学的参与人员、管理机制、服务设施、实施方法、实施感受进行了分析,最后对国内高校图书馆嵌入式教学服务的发展提出合理化建议.

本文参考中关高校图书馆人员调查资料，从两国图书馆干部的选拔机制、馆长的任职条件、图书馆人员构成比例、专业人员的文化程度、职称结构及评聘等人事管理方面作全面比较，以期给国内高校图书馆队伍建设提供参考。     

Retention Matters: Academic Libraries Leading the Way

Academic libraries have always strived to be purposively involved in the university's mission attainment efforts. Today, the increase of retention levels is paramount, and, in many cases, it is at the center of higher education institution's strategic plans. For Andrews University, for example, the goal is to reach 80% in the next five years. In the United States, student retention efforts become even more critical due, in part, to declining enrollment numbers set off by soaring higher education costs. Academic librarians are aware of the library's role in the university's overall efforts to increase persistence rates and curtail attrition. Through a literature review, this article highlights how academic libraries are participating in this process. This study focuses on how academic libraries can be leaders in their Institutions by adopting a user-centered philosophy and services that will promote life-long learning, enhance students’ academic experience, and promote engagement, leading to retention.
