NOAH (New York Online Access to Health)

Abstract

NOAH (New York Online Access to Health) is a Web site developed by four library partner organizations, in an effort to provide timely, accurate and unbiased health information to the health consumers in New York City in both English and Spanish. Since expanded to include two other partner organizations, NOAH continues, with the help of volunteer librarians, to expand and enhance the site, always with the mission to provide full-text health information in the most user-friendly method possible.

The other way leads the libraries into the challenges and chaos of the Internet. There are innovative attempts to use the potential of the Internet to redirect traditional patterns of access to information and services.

Internet Reference Sources in the Humanities

Discusses collection development issues involving humanities Internet resources with a particular focus on sustainability, and highlights a few of the major Internet vendors and resources.     

Error 404: or, what is the shelf-life of printed Internet guides?

Many publishers are producing books loaded with directions for finding useful Internet sites in a particular subject area. The moderate costs make them seem to be attractive additions to a collection. However, given the ephemeral nature of the World Wide Web, can a print resource be published with sufficient shelf life to justify purchase? This study evaluates some of these Internet guides for post-publication accuracy. In evaluating nine books published between two and three years ago, the researchers checked 3,941 URLs. In reviewing the data, the authors found that some books retained their value quite well, whereas others did not. The article presents the details of this study and offers selection criteria for identifying those web guidebooks that will increase the value of the collection.

Evaluating Consumer Health Information: What Fails to Harm Us Makes Us Smarter

Freely available health information on the Web often requires academic librarians to evaluate content on-the-fly. Studies indicated a significant number of health web sites do not measure up to research standards. Instruments that evaluate web sites have themselves performed unevenly and a standardized instrument has yet to be realized. Instruments for evaluating health information relatively quickly are presented so librarians can familiarize themselves with the process. The debate concerning whether health web sites possess harmful or potentially harmful content is reviewed. Librarians are encouraged to work with teaching faculty and urge students to look beyond currency, authority, and advertising and apply rigorous criteria.

Delphi Method in Web Site Selection: Using the Experts

Summary

The development of Web sites is proceeding at an ever-quickening pace. Adult learners can benefit from the wealth of information accessible in both new sites and changing older sites. However, that excitement is tempered by frustration in following blind leads or encountering questionable quality. One approach is to stay abreast of the latest material by attempting to look at and read every new and modified site. However, time is finite, and many of our students have lives filled with conflicting needs. The Delphi method, a sociological research technique first developed in defense research, is used to elicit expert opinion as a short cut to evaluating Web sites. A specific example with business-related sites is presented as a test case in developing and applying the methodology. The use of Delphi, an oracle-based technique, seems quite appropriate as we assist our adult students to allocate their time wisely.     

Recruiting for Stability

The high turnover rate for non-professional staff is causing library managers to spend inordinate amounts of time filling and refilling the same posibons. Recruiting efforts need to move beyond the diminishing youlh segment and focus on Lhe burgeoning senior population. In addition to filling the void, older employees are bringing with them slability, consistency, and commitment. Libraries need to ready the workplace for seniors by examining attitudes, accommodating special needs, and actively recruiting. Changing demographics call for changing hiring practices.     

Adult Students: Wandering the Web with a Purpose

Summary

In the spring 1997, the Adult Liberal Studies Program at the University of Toledo invited proposal to design, develop, and teach a seminar course specifically for the adult learner. Our adult learners must learn to move seamless through the Internet, web-based interfaces and stand alone CD-ROMs. The course proposal, “Wandering the web with a purpose: Using the Internet for information and research,” was accepted as a four credit hour course and is specifically geared for adult learners who range in age from their early 30s to late 70s.     

Health Care Professions: Career Information on the Internet for Students

The United States is currently experiencing a nursing shortage, and it is expected to worsen in the next ten years. Physician shortages are also projected. Some allied health professions are also experiencing personnel shortages. Health sciences libraries can be of service in addressing the shortages by making information available on health care careers. Internet sites and resources on health care career decisions are discussed in this article.

The article discusses Russian online bookshops and notes that they are one manifestation of the literature-centered quality of Russian-language Internet.     

Children's Librarians and BPH Subregional Librarians

Ways are explored in which public library children's librarians can help sighted children increase their understanding of persons with visual impairment and their skills in communicating with them. Interviews were conducted with six children's librarians and six BPH subregional librarians, and searches were made in the public library catalogs and the Regional BPH Library fiche catalog for selected titles. Three areas for discussion emerged: reader advisory and reference questions, collection development, and programming. Public library children's librarians and BPH subregional librarians can jointly coordinate provision of children's services by identifying and building on present strengths in collection development and programming.     

Partners in Emerging Technology

Abstract

This paper discusses how the University of Wyoming Libraries have worked in partnership with the larger institution and its Outreach School to develop a strategic plan for the future of distance education at the University of Wyoming. This collaboration insures that distance learners receive comparable library services to on-campus learners. The authors focus on how the World Wide Web is utilized to provide library services to students, in particular to online students.
