The American Mosaic

The Graduate School of Library and Information Studies at Queens College, CUNY conducted a series of four conferences on the impact of America's increasingly diverse society on the curriculum of schools of library/information science. Each of the conferences had a library/information center type as its focus. Each addressed issues of administration, reference services, and collection management. The overall findings and some recommendations are included.     

Another Look at Graduate Education for Cataloging and the Organization of Information

ABSTRACT

Education for library cataloging and the organization of information (OI) continues to evolve. The current condition of graduate courses in these areas is examined through a review of the curricula of the 56 ALA-accredited graduate schools of library and information sciences (LIS) in the United States and Canada. This article, the second installment of a longitudinal study that began in 2000 to examine the state of cataloging education, contains a snapshot of this component of LIS education from the 2005–2006 academic year. It examines the types of OI courses being offered, the number of these courses actually being taught, and current trends and developments in cataloging education based on comparisons with earlier studies.

Are Library Science Programs Preparing New Librarians? Creating a Sustainable and Vibrant Librarian Community

Recent studies show a growing sense of frustration for new library and information science (LIS) graduates who struggle to gain employment, as well as for hiring libraries who find the skills of entry-level employee candidates to be lacking. This study endeavors to discover the origins of this troubling juxtaposition by examining the perceptions of recent LIS graduates. The researchers administered a large-scale survey with over 575 respondents, analyzed and coded the data, and compared codes using a Cohen's kappa calculation. The responses indicate that LIS graduates feel that their LIS education would have been more valuable had it given them more opportunities to gain experience, more courses in technology and instruction, more guidance in which courses to take, and more mentoring opportunities with practicing information professionals.     

A Survey of Cataloging Education: Are Library Schools Listening?

ABSTRACT

In recent years a number of surveys of cataloging education have been conducted, and each of those surveys has suggested changes in library education. This survey reviews the current state of cataloging education by evaluating courses taught by 47 ALA accredited programs and compares the results to previous studies. This study examined the types of cataloging courses offered in LIS programs to determine if the type of course taught has changed over time. Additionally, this study examined course offering frequencies to determine if LIS programs are making the kind of courses needed to train cataloging librarians available to their students. It is concluded that although LIS programs are continuing to offer and require introductory courses in cataloging and bibliographic control, they are relying more heavily on these introductory courses to provide the bulk of cataloging education.

对美国图书馆与资讯学(LIS)教育计划类型进行调研，以列表的形式列出提供LIS硕士学位、LIS哲学博士学位、LIS学士学位、其他硕士学位等11种教育计划类型的大学，并进行分析;对LIS院系的地区分布(包括东北部、东南部、中西部、西部4个地区)进行统计和分析;分析各LIS院系的综合和专业排名情况;最后在上述调研和分析的基础上，提出4点意见。     

Graduate Education for Information Organization,Cataloging, and Metadata

Discussions of cataloging and metadata education are popular in social media outlets, scholarly literature, conference meetings, and so on. This article, the third installment of a longitudinal study on the state of information organization (IO) education, analyzes the recent literature to identify new and continuing themes related to IO education. It provides an overview of the curricula of the 58 library and information science graduate programs in the United States and Canada accredited by the American Library Association (ALA). It examines the current conditions in 2012–2013 and compares them to data from earlier studies. It provides an overview of the types of IO courses available, program requirements, the number of schools offering IO courses, and the number of schools teaching those courses.     

Multicultural Approach for Curriculum Development in the Library and Information Sciences

A major obstacle to attracting students from cultural/ ethnic/linguistic minorities is the professional stereotype. Removing this is a first step in increasing minority representation in the profession. A second step would require that schools of library/information science identify people-oriented individuals and actively recruit them. With these preliminary steps and minor adjustments to the current curriculum, library/information science education can make strides in diversity.

Find 'Em or Grow Your Own

Given the small number of library/information service professionals from minority groups the profession can not afford to fail to make recruiting from cultural/ethnic/linguistic minorities a priority. This will require innovative recruiting tactics on the part of current professionals to guide para-professionals, non-professionals and volunteers to entering this profession. It will require some degree of flexibility on the part of schools of library/information science to meet the needs of these students. Employers too will have to make it possible for current staff who desire it to complete their professional education. Administrators have a role in creating staffing patterns to foster further education.     

英国图书馆学情报学研究生教育及其对我国的借鉴意义

英国的图书馆学情报学教育在经历了一系列改革之后 ,其培养目标、课程体系设置、课程内容、教学方式都发生了重大变化。对我国的借鉴意义在于 :培养方向上 ,实现培养目标的社会化和综合化 ;课程体系上 ,借鉴英国的模块化教育 ;课程内容上以信息技术贯穿整个教育始终 ,注重理论与实践的结合 ;采取多样化教学。表 1。参考文献 8。     

解析iSchools联盟发展现状与特色

从iSchools成员的分布、系所名称、博士班学程的特色,剖析iSchools成员的属性,以期能从中观察iSchools对资讯领域产生的影响。研究结果显示,目前iSchools 38个成员以美国为主,遍及欧、亚、澳各地,形成全球资讯学院联盟,有助于学术交流与合作。再者,其中有12个成员(占31.6%)来自ALA认可的学校,比例颇高,且其系所名称多单独使用资讯或资讯研究一词,传统的图书馆学系所在此已显式微。至于系所名称的表现,iSchools偏重资讯领域,有65.8%的系所名称以资讯一词起始、97.4%的系所名称涵盖资讯一词,显见资讯在此群组的主导性。最后,在人才培植方面,iSchools锁定资讯领域的高级学术、研究人才、企业界的高阶主管为目标,普设博士班学程,跨学科的课程以资讯为主体,强调科技应用。
