对复合图书馆编目工作重心的思考

在复合图书馆时代,图书馆编目工作的重心将转向深化传统编目工作内涵、拓宽数字化资源编目的外延、增强OPAC功能、加强联机书目数据库的规范文档建设工作4个方面。编目员应立足实践,创新编目工作,关注国际编目新动态,指导日常编目工作,以提升职业竞争力。     

对新时期高职院校图书馆编目工作的思考

随着计算机和网络技术的发展，给高职院校图书馆的编目工作赋予了新的意义和内容，并改变了以往的编目工作方式。文章根据新时期编目工作的现状，提出了一些当前高职院校图书馆编目工作的思路。     

印前编目与在版编目、联合编目的区别与联系

印前编目与在版编目（CIP）和联合编目既有区别又有联系。通过对三者的比较分析发现,印前编目、在版编目和联合编目在编目机构、编目主体、编目对象、编目时间、编目目的、编目用途方面存在区别;而印前编目与CIP和联合编目之间的联系则更多地表现在印前编目对CIP时效性的继承、对联合编目联合性的发展及在前两者的基础上引入专业分工理念的创新。     

LIBSYS5.0下图书编目数据源的分析与检索

图书馆自动化与网络化的迅速发展带来了编目数据源的多样化,图书编目数据源按利用率分为原始数据源和二次数据源,二次数据源又包括本地数据源、书商数据源、在版编目数据源、OPAC数据源以及联机联合编目数据源。在LIBSYS 5.0编目系统中,原始数据源是基础,联机联合编目数据源是主体,书商数据源和本地数据源是补充,其他数据源是参考,各种数据源在检索和应用中有其自身特点又相互关联。中国OCLC建成后将成为我国最大的编目数据源。     

网络环境下动漫图书的编目规范化

文章结合动漫图书的特点,通过实例对成人馆和儿童馆两种不同分类体系动漫图书的标引、编目等问题进行分析,多角度深入研究了编目标准及提高编目数据质量的对策,以期对动漫图书编目的建设有所助益。

新环境下“编目”课程教学问题的思考

认为新环境下的信息组织课程是对传统“编目”课程的继承与发展。因而,在教学思路上,一方面,信息组织课程要保留传统“编目”课程的精髓;另一方面,传统编目理论与技术又需要调整定位。同时,要强调信息组织理论素养和计算机技术在信息组织课程的重要性。在课程设置上,应考虑到信息组织在信息资源管理学科的位置和所承担的任务与职能,可采用层次化课程设置方法;在教学方法上,要注意平衡理论与实践,并兼顾各种载体和重视计算机教学。

A Survey of Cataloging Education: Are Library Schools Listening?

ABSTRACT

In recent years a number of surveys of cataloging education have been conducted, and each of those surveys has suggested changes in library education. This survey reviews the current state of cataloging education by evaluating courses taught by 47 ALA accredited programs and compares the results to previous studies. This study examined the types of cataloging courses offered in LIS programs to determine if the type of course taught has changed over time. Additionally, this study examined course offering frequencies to determine if LIS programs are making the kind of courses needed to train cataloging librarians available to their students. It is concluded that although LIS programs are continuing to offer and require introductory courses in cataloging and bibliographic control, they are relying more heavily on these introductory courses to provide the bulk of cataloging education.     

Cataloging from the Center: Improving e-Book Cataloging on a Consortial Level

In 2014, the Ohio Library and Information Network (OhioLINK) overhauled its consortial cataloging workflows by switching to what has been termed a model of “cataloging from the center.” For more than 20 years, the Ohio academic library consortium relied on volunteers from its member institutions to catalog consortially purchased materials. Consolidating the consortial cataloging into the OhioLINK office allowed for revising the various workflows. Since 2014, the cataloging workflows for these shared electronic resources have improved efficiencies, allowing records to be provided to members in a more timely manner.     

Mandate for change: merging acquisitions and cataloging functions into a single workflow

In 2001, The University of Southern Mississippi (USM) Libraries cataloging and acquisition units merged to become a larger totally integrated department, renamed Bibliographic Services. Historically, acquisitions and cataloging functions were managed separately, although initial pre-order cataloging procedures were in place since late 1993. Prior to the merger in 2001, cataloging staff selected and exported MARC records in advance of the ordering functions performed exclusively by acquisitions staff. Library administrative personnel, concerned with the persistent lag time from receipt of the order card to actual receipt of the item, mandated change. After implementing new procedures and streamlining workflow, a sample analysis of productivity and fill rates for two fiscal years, before change and after, demonstrated significantly that cataloging at point of order is desirable in providing faster delivery of new materials.     

Romani Language: Cataloging Ramifications for a Language in the Process of Standardization

In this article, the author discusses issues related to the cataloging of a language, Romani (or Romany), which is only in the twenty-first century beginning to achieve some degree of standardization. In his discussion, the author focuses on issues of Romani orthography, specifically a small number of unusual Unicode characters that may cause technical problems in certain automated cataloging environments, such as OCLC WorldCat, the OCLC cataloging client Connexion, and online library catalogs.     

我国高校图书馆编目工作价值的调查研究

文章在对当前我国高校图书馆编目人员的基本情况、编目工作内容及工作方式、编目业务外包情况、编目信息的价值及编目人员在图书馆工作中的作用等进行调查分析的基础上,分析了我国高校图书馆编目工作的发展现状、存在问题,进而提出相应的对策。     

Defining Cataloging Ethics: Practitioner Perspectives

ABSTRACT

Catalogers often need to make ethical decisions about their daily work. What is the starting point for defining cataloging ethics and how do practitioners define the concept? In this paper, the authors explore definitions of ethics and cataloging ethics in the literature, and subsequently analyze responses to a question asking respondents to define cataloging ethics. Set against the existing backdrop of the American Library Association “Code of Ethics,” the authors propose that shared values create a framework for discussing cataloging ethics, rather than a single articulated definition.

Purpose-driven Assessment of Cataloging and Metadata Services: Transforming Broken Links into Linked Data

Abstract

In response to the impact of emerging technologies, this article examines the relationship between strategic planning and the assessment methodologies of cataloging and metadata services and explores (or “suggests” if appropriate) how to assess cataloging and metadata activities more effectively and relevantly. Besides literature review, the author conducted surveys for more than seventy librarians and follow-up interviews with three library administrators. The results indicate the gap between strategic planning and assessment for cataloging and metadata services, and identify the significance of impact and users’ needs in strategic planning for the assessment of cataloging and metadata services. These elements are critical in transforming the broken links in the current cataloging assessment into a purpose-driven assessment corresponding to users’ needs and evolving technologies.
