MILWAUKEE PUBLIC LIBRARY, 1942-1980:

The Milwaukee Public Library, with its present system of 50 automatic circulation control terminals, 17 CRTs, four mini-computers. 105 billion characters of on-line disc storage, seven tape drives, as well as the use of the City Hall main frames, has had a long history of data processing starting back in 1942. The disappointments, problems, and successes, especially with major control of its data processing operations, are spelled out. Also, a brief overview is offered of other system developments.

The SUNY biomedical communication network: six years of progress in on-line bibiographic retrieval.

The SUNY Biomedical Communication Network became operational in 1968 as the first on-line bibliograhpic retrieval service for biomedical literature. Since 1968, the SUNY/BCN has grown in size from nine to thirty-two medical and university libraries and has expanded its data base coverage to include the ERIC and Psychological Abstracts data bases in addition to the full ten-year retrospective MEDLARS data base. Aside from the continuous provision of an on-line searching system, the SUNY experience over the last six years has yielded valuable information in the following areas of: (1) monograph indexing and retrieval, (2) shared cataloging, (3) user interaction and education in on-line systems, and (4) member participation in Network policy-making processes. The continued success of the SUNY/BCN is evidence that it is possible to provide a high quality on-line bibliographic retrieval system at cost to academic institutions. SUNY's success in this effort is the result of centralized resource sharing and effective regional networking, combined with thoughtful planning by user advisory committees.

Pathfinders On-Line

Abstract

For decades, print pathfinders have complemented card catalogs and been useful reference tools. They're overlooked as components of on-line catalogs, even though they can extend the depth of the catalog. To encourage librarians to consider integrating pathfinders into on-line catalogs, the authors discuss problems in OPAC searching, describe the value and styles of pathfinders, and illustrate how to include them in a NOTIS system.     

The NEOUCOM Cooperative Cataloging Service: development and review of the first four years

The Basic Medical Sciences Library of the Northeastern Ohio Universities College of Medicine (NEOUCOM) provided a Cooperative Cataloging Service to fourteen of its affiliated hospitals' libraries since March 1978, using the OCLC system. Analysis of the first four years of service showed that the hospital libraries spent almost $30,000 to catalog more than 18,000 titles. Personnel expenses and other costs eclipsed the savings from a 31.3% duplication rate. Centralized bibliographic control control and the principal by-product of the service, a uniform, machine-related data base, provided the foundation for an on-line integrated library system to serve the consortium. The hospital libraries contributed 44% of the unique titles in this data base, which emphasis the need to share resources and continue cooperation.

Microcomputers as on-line catalogs in special libraries.

This article discusses the rationale for the conversion of a card catalog to an on-line system in a special library owning approximately 4000 titles. Equipment, software, and procedures are described. Pros and cons of the use of a microcomputer for such a project, as well as costs and personnel needs, are outlined.

Evolution of a processing system in a large biomedical library.

The processing system used in the UCLA Biomedical Library is modest in size and still under development. Its origins date back to a batch mode serials control system begun in the mid-1960s. This was converted to an on-line system which currently has modules for check-in, updating and retrieval, claims, bindery preparation, and invoice information. Titles can be retrieved at the terminal by search of any word in the title, by subject heading, language, country of publication, and type of publication. The system is adaptable to network use and at present is shared with one other library. To the serials system has been added a computer-assisted cataloging and card production system. The latter utilizes serials nucleus software as well as design for data input and data storage. In-house listings and coding procedures overlap in a general way. Work is under way on further integration of the two processing subsystems and a feasibility study has been completed for addition of a subsystem for acquisitions which will combine and adapt features of the other two; for example, information retrieval characteristics from both, catalog coding and programs for acceptance of data, serials programs for claims, and other output programs. Cost benefits of the subsystems are described and discussed.     

The implementation of a dictionary as an inverse structure for the information retrieval system in the VINITI RAN DBn

This article describes methods and tools for the implementation of a dictionary (inverse file) as an intrinsic element of an information-retrieval system that is designed for on-line user searches. The methods and tools for increasing the IRS efficiency as a whole and the dictionary in particular are described. The authors discuss the principles of the compilation of stop-word lists and algorithmic verification of vocabulary while generating a dictionary.

Research Guides in a Public Policy Environment

This paper describes how the Congressional Research Service modified the pathfinder form for use in a congressional public policy environment. The development and evolution of the CRS Research Guide format is discussed as are format and topic selection considerations. Future developments, which include on-line guides that will have direct links to the Library of Congress SCORPIO system, are outlined.     

AGRICOLA

AGRICOLA (Agricultural Online Access), the bibliographic data base of the National Agricultural Library, is a computerized information retrieval system that can be adapted for use in many library functions. Although the system is most commonly used for retrieval of bibliographic references by subject, it can also be helpful in preorder and precataloging searches, in interlibrary loan verification, and in collection analysis. Various bibliometric studies that can be done with the on-line versions of AGRICOLA are described as well.
