Summary

Libraries have begun to add chat reference as a method to deliver reference service to remote user populations. To deliver quality service in a timely fashion, libraries need to construct a Virtual Ready Reference Collection (VRRC) of elite ready reference Web sites most often used during the chat reference interaction. This article explores the collection development steps needed to create a VRRC that is most beneficial on the local level. The value in creating this collection lies not just in the end product, but also in the process, which serves as a valuable training exercise. Selecting and maintaining the virtual ready reference collection will enhance the chat reference librarians' ability to deliver service in the chat reference environment.  相似文献

Abstract

Throughout the 1990s, many academic libraries undertook major restructuring initiatives. In many cases, this involved merging a Government Documents Department with a General Reference Department. At the University of Oregon Libraries, a different approach was taken. Between 1998 and 2000, the Business Reference service and Map Collection was successfully integrated into the Government Documents Collection. With these three collections now available through one service point, many new opportunities have been created for enhanced reference services, library instruction, collection development, and outreach across campus and into the community. This study reports on a nationwide unobtrusive evaluation of government documents reference service at public and academic depository libraries in Canada. Fifteen questions dealing with subject matter from both the legislative and executive branches of government were asked 488 times at 104 depository libraries in 30 census metropolitan areas. Overall, depository library staff members provided complete answers to questions 29.3% of the time. When complete and partially complete answers are counted together, the success rate climbs to 42.4%. Academic full depositories achieved the highest rate of success, followed by public full depositories. In-person questions were answered more successfully than phone questions. Print materials were by far the largest single source used (45.7%) to answer questions. When print alone was used, complete answers to the test questions were found only 39.9% of the time. When World Wide Web sources alone were used, the complete answer rate was 60.7%. To improve service, extensive and periodic staff training may be needed about the structures and functions of both the legislative and executive branches of government. Staff members need to know what programs are available and who is responsible for which program in the federal government.  相似文献

Explores virtual reference as a new career opportunity for librarians. Asks if this is a good, long career path, or if it will careen virtual reference librarians off into the slough of despond. The skills needed for the traditional reference librarian are compared to those needed by the virtual reference librarian; the challenges and advantages of working virtual versus traditional reference are identified; the types of questions and resources used in providing virtual reference service are discussed; and the types of interaction with the patrons are explored. Abstract

The literature indicates most academic libraries do not have formal reference collection policies, or that if they do, such documents are not up-to-date. Kansas provides an optimum setting to examine college and undergraduate libraries as most institutions of higher learning in the state are small to medium in size. Kansas is consistent with the trends indicated in the literature. All academic libraries in the state were asked to submit a copy of their policy. Each document was examined in light of: rationale for having a policy, defining the nature of the collection, criteria on inclusion and exclusion, input from stakeholders, managing budget costs, electronic resources, and weeding. Selection criteria and sample polices provide a practical guide for the development of a policy. All formats are considered.  相似文献

In 2008, the University of Louisville’s (UofL) Ekstrom Library printed reference collection numbered almost 30,000 volumes. Copious collecting and sparse weeding built up the collection during the era before the Internet. There had been considerable reluctance to address its more outdated sections due to competing priorities and inertia. A change of leadership as well as the recognition of changing use patterns had lessened the need for such a large collection. In 2011, three librarians began a title-by-title review process that resulted in an 86% reduction of the reference collection by 2014. This article describes that process, summarizes the results, and discusses the benefits and disadvantages of this approach.  相似文献

Abstract

Researchers performed a cost and benefit analysis of the University of South Florida's locally controlled chat service and compared the results to the advantages and expenses associated with a chat consortium. An evaluation of chat sessions revealed that a substantial portion of the inquiries received relate to university-specific interests. In addition to the local nature of chat questions, library staff used USF statistics to estimate the staffing, software, and training costs of the current chat reference service. The collaborative service under consideration involves both additional costs and benefits. A final decision, however, requires an in-depth assessment of several factors. Supplementary factors in this examination include a brief history of USF virtual reference service and the current trends in instant messaging that support the continuance of chat reference.  相似文献

In early 1989 a questionnaire was sent to forty-eight public and twelve academic libraries in Rhode Island to ascertain the use of and attitudes toward schedules for reference collection maintenance. The great majority of libraries favored this approach, although the individual schedules varied greatly. Over seventy-five percent of the reporting libraries had or were in the process of developing written collection development policies, but few had any written policies concerning scheduled replacement and none had a written policy encompassing all the material replaced automatically on a schedule.  相似文献
