E-Serials Cataloging in the 1990s

Summary

The published literature specific to electronic serials cataloging over the decade of the 1990s and the work of CONSER, MARBI, the ALCTS Committee to Study Serials Cataloging, and others were reviewed to identify issues and developments. The proliferation and the changing nature of e-serials were challenges to catalogers throughout the period examined. Policies and procedures were offered by CONSER and its members. Multiple versions, revising AACR2, metadata, and aggregator databases were among the issues actively discussed at the close of the decade.     

MARC Record Services: A Comparative Study of Library Practices and Perceptions

The number of journal titles available in digital format to libraries through aggregators and publisher packages has increased, but library resources to catalog these titles have not kept pace with the increases. More libraries are therefore turning to MARC record service vendors to provide batches of electronic serials bibliographic records, either full or brief. This study presents the results of a survey asking library personnel about their experiences with and attitudes toward MARC record services. Although many survey participants expressed satisfaction with the services, they also responded that they would like a greater number of more accurate full bibliographic records. Also, although a majority of libraries use a separate records approach with the services, a significant minority use a single record approach.     

Beyond Title Lists

Abstract

Librarians and patrons can access many thousands of electronic journals today. Librarians who incorporate records for these journals into their OPACs will maximize the journals' access and use, but accurately tracking them can be difficult. This paper describes a commercial solution to the problem. Serials Solutions combines aggregator title lists with CONSER MARC records to improve access to these titles. This paper reviews the benefits and challenges associated with this process, and identifies several areas in which aggregators and OPAC vendors can improve the services they provide, to facilitate this process.     

The Accessing and Archiving of Electronic Journals

ABSTRACT

This dissertation focuses upon the challenges and problems that libraries face relating to the accessing and archiving of electronic journals (EJs) and considers the implications these issues will have on those involved in the information profession. This topic is becoming an increasingly important issue for libraries, which can no longer be ignored, as the usage of EJs has increased radically. The problems associated with the archiving of EJs are great. If archiving continues to be ignored, much information will be lost. This must be prevented at all costs.

The dissertation is broken down into 10 chapters. The introduction gives an overview and details the methodology and layout. This is followed by a discussion on the background and current context that EJs operate in. The following chapters then consider the main problems associated with the accessing and archiving of EJs. This involves topics such as what should be archived, who should be responsible for the archiving process, how the materials should be archived and where they should be archived. This requires the study of numerous technical, economic, business, organisational and legal models.

The focus is predominantly on libraries but the study would be incomplete without looking at others involved in the information profession, namely publishers and trusted third party archives. The argument is that although technically the archiving process is feasible, poor relations between libraries and publishers make this difficult to achieve. It is hard to reach a consensus on how the process should be carried out and the lack of developed standards exacerbates this problem. Economic, legal, business and organisational models must be considered before the archiving of EJs can be facilitated effectively. The dissertation looks at how these can be achieved and highlights the importance of further detailed research in this field.     

Cataloging for Consortial Collections: A Survey

ABSTRACT

Libraries face many challenges in making electronic resources accessible and discoverable. In particular, the exponentially incre-asing number of licensed and open access electronic resources and the dynamic nature of consortial collections (platform changes, title transference between packages, and package overlap) present challenges for cataloging and discovery. From March 21 to April 10, 2017, the authors performed a selected review of library literature and conducted a survey of library consortia worldwide to ascertain the cataloging models, strategies, and advanced technological tools used to ensure discovery of consortial collections. The findings from the literature review and survey are summarized in this article.     

(Re)Making the Serials Cataloger: The SCCTP Within an Educational Framework

ABSTRACT

The Serials Cooperative Cataloging Program (SCCTP) is reviewed from the standpoint of a library educator. Although the demand for copy catalogers has declined in the era of digital information, the demand for original catalogers has remained constant due, in part, to the growth in titles in different media formats and different languages. Additionally linking to information housed externally or internally and embedding metadata tags for resource discovery are among the new tasks for organizers of information in the Internet era. Increasingly professional organizations are filling the need for continuing education and training for advanced-level catalogers. This article examines the SCCTP as a model for continuous professional development and concludes it is adaptable more generally.     

Strategies for Catalog Management of Electronic Monographs in Series

Electronic monographic series display a complex mix of the characteristics of electronic serials, electronic books, and print monograph series. Because many cannot be managed via the typical tools and services used to manage electronic resources, providing title-level, or analytic cataloging presents challenges above and beyond the usual challenges for e-resources. This article enumerates those challenges, proposes a set of criteria for making analysis decisions for e-monograph series, and suggests other directions libraries might pursue to provide catalog access to this important category of resources.     

HKUST’s Experience with CONSER: A Two Decade Partnership

Abstract

The Library of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST), as the only CONSER full member outside North America, has entered into its twentieth year of CONSER membership. This article provides a historical overview of the Library’s participation in the program, its considerations and concerns when it first joined CONSER, and challenges and benefits it experienced over the years. The PCC-related activities that the Library has participated in have increased its growth in the field. The article concludes with future challenges the Library and its community will face.

随着电子文件单轨制的落实和电子文件数据化进程的开始,电子文件知识服务正受到越来越多的关注。电子文件知识图谱,既是电子文件数据化的一种方式,又是电子文件知识服务的技术与资源基础。电子文件不同于一般的信息资源,它除了包含文件内容,还涉及与之相关的组织结构、业务逻辑等背景信息。受电子文件特性的影响,电子文件知识图谱不同于一般的领域知识图谱:在构建路径方面,电子文件的背景与结构信息,包括来源机构信息、业务流程信息和职能分类信息和版本变化信息等的知识化,将贯穿电子文件知识图谱构建过程中的多个节点;在知识服务方面,不同于一般的领域知识图谱,电子文件知识图谱能够提供面向业务活动的知识服务,其利用形态会更加丰富。结合现阶段各领域知识图谱的表现,电子文件知识图谱将会是电子文件开发利用的重要方式,是实现电子文件知识服务的重要途径,是电子文件管理事业进一步向决策端转型的重要推手。     

E-Journal Cataloging in an Age of Alternatives: A Survey of Academic Libraries

This article reports on a survey of U.S. academic libraries that was conducted in the spring of 2008 to determine if and how academic libraries were actively cataloging e-journals in the age of the OpenURL, A–Z journal lists, and the batch loading of purchased MARC records.     

From Vision to Action: One Campus's Experience with the UC CONSER Funnel

ABSTRACT

In 2006, the University of California launched a Cooperative Online Serials Program (CONSER) Funnel. It paved the way for serials catalogers across UC libraries to work with CONSER records in the OCLC WorldCat database. The first funnel dealing with bibliographic records in a decentralized approach in the Program for Cooperative Cataloging's history, it has had significant impact locally and nationally. The UC Davis Library was one of the early participants. Valerie Bross was instrumental in its establishment and implementation. This article presents the view from a participating library's standpoint and complements Valerie's article which was published here in 2010.

Cataloging Oral Histories: Creating MARC Records for Individual Oral History Interviews

Cataloging oral histories presents many difficulties, especially for catalogers who have primarily worked with published materials and for institutions without funds or staff dedicated to managing oral history collections. Methods for cataloging oral histories can vary widely among institutions. In this article I examine the issues and considerations involved in providing intellectual access to oral history interviews and offer a possible cataloging method to libraries holding unprocessed oral history materials. The cataloging procedures discussed here have worked well from a workflow standpoint as one of the initial steps to create access to oral histories at Columbus State University, a medium-sized academic library.
