Summary

An overwhelming majority (94%) of surveyed students rely on assistance from librarians (80%), professors (9%), and friends (5%) when using ERIC-on-CDROM, even when they are not first-time users. Almost three-quarters of the students report that ERIC-on-CDROM improves research quality (74%) and learning (70%) and evokes feelings of motivation and accomplishment (72%). All students indicate that they will return to use ERIC-on-CDROM but only 39% feel capable of transferring their skills to similar databases. Responses indicate that ERIC-on-CDROM contributes to highly individualized learning situations in which students successfully find information through assistance from both humans and computers.  相似文献

Abstract

The Reference Department at the University of Colorado at Boulder provides a research consultation service to undergraduates enrolled in the mandatory introductory writing course. The Research Center is staffed by graduate students trained in providing reference assistance. Librarians in the Reference Department administered a patron satisfaction survey to 415 students to evaluate the effectiveness of the Research Center. The survey addressed patron response to the research tutors, services offered, and overall satisfaction. Responses are overwhelmingly positive. Students used the Research Center most often on Mondays and between weeks 7 and 13 of the semester.  相似文献

SUMMARY

Libraries support a number of instructional programs, including the use of individualized instructional sessions. Research consultations offered by the Mississippi State University Libraries are individualized research sessions designed to meet the information needs of the user or client. Sessions may provide basic information for undergraduates, advanced searching techniques for pre-dissertation graduate students, or serve as an overview of related resources for new faculty. Information concerning the structure and performance expectations for the service is discussed. Data from a year's use of the service are analyzed to identify the client base and to explore successful marketing strategies for the service.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Utah State University has successfully implemented a service that incorporates e-mail reference and an appointment-based model. The advantages of the Term Paper & Research Assistance service are reviewed. The program incorporates a great deal of flexibility for the participating librarians and the clients they serve and eliminates the need for a “coordinator.” Use statistics and positive student feedback have underscored the service's potential for future growth.  相似文献

[目的/意义] 大学生写作能力缺失是一种普遍现象,高校图书馆写作辅导服务是提高大学生写作素养的重要手段,开展嵌入式写作辅导服务对提升学生写作能力具有重要促进作用。[方法/过程] 探讨图书馆嵌入式写作辅导服务的基本模式,研究嵌入服务的具体对象、嵌入服务的形式、嵌入服务的内容及其效果评价方法。并以西南交通大学图书馆服务实践为例,分析嵌入式写作辅导教学服务实践中的经验、存在问题、对策和建议。[结果/结论] 高校图书馆应该根据学校具体情况,结合学科特点及具体课程要求,选择相应的嵌入方法模式,并加强长效机制建设。  相似文献

This paper focuses on the reference services provided by librarians at the Transportation Library for the police officer students enrolled in the School of Police Staff and Command, Traffic Institute, Northwestern University (Evanston, Illinois). Although this program is unique, the wealth of experience gained over several years can be useful for others who are planning and implementing services for adult learners within an academic environment. The Transportation Library's unusual organizational culture—a corporate library within an academic setting- and a variety of clients necessitates “changing gears” and services to meet the needs of each group.  相似文献

The 21st century technical services librarian has access to a plethora of electronic and online work tools from which to choose to complete daily tasks. An assessment of the Western Kentucky University Libraries (WKUL) 19 benchmark institutions shows a great disparity of online work tools made available through university libraries technical services departmental Web sites. Four areas (technical services, cataloging, serials, and acquisitions) are discussed. Outcomes indicate that (1) few of these institutions list online work tools and (2) of those that do, there is very little overlap. In spring 2005, Sims Memorial Library at Southeastern Louisiana University initiated “Text A Librarian,” a service that enables Southeastern students, faculty, and staff to use the text message feature of their cell phones to send questions to and receive answers from the library. SUMMARY

In 1999, librarians at the University of Alabama (UA) developed a program to reintroduce library instruction into the English Department's mandatory Freshman Composition Program. This article discusses the development, execution, outcome, and assessment of the program and includes tips for developing a similar program. Through negotiation and open discussion with the Director of Freshman English, the library successfully convinced the Director to allow a program of instruction back into the English 101 program. Library instruction sessions were paired with one of the essays/assignments common to all English 101 classes. A survey conducted to assess the library's efforts concluded that the instruction had a positive effect on students' understanding of library resources.  相似文献
