Today's labor market has become increasingly complex. and the average career or job seeker has been left stranded. New information is required at every turn. Libraries are in a position to be a prime player in the delivery of career and job sources and services. Before doing so, however, libraries must have key personnel who: are knowledgeable of labor market and employment trends; develop strong core collections in career and job sources; are well versed in accessing information, including various formats and nontraditional sources; network with other community career/job resources; and market the library's services. In doing so, libraries have the opportunity to provide much of the information required for a career or job search, and in the process can enhance its reputation within the community.  相似文献

This paper discusses the evolution of Internet information servers in libraries, from their typical origin as maverick systems department experiments, to the current state where libraries must address the need to incorporate network-based information into the traditional work of collection management, acquisitions, and cataloging. Does the traditional model of information acquisition and organization apply to network-based information? where nearly anyone can be both a provider and a consumer of information from the comfort of their personal computer, what role do libraries have? How should the library profession respond to the proliferation of gopher and world wide web servers?  相似文献

Data and information resources on the Internet are growing at a rapid rate. To identify and organize these resources is not only necessary but crucial to the Internet community. An interactive training tool developed and tested at Northwestern University Library instructs serials catalogers in cataloging electronic serials on the Internet. Alternatively, the University of Nebraska is using non-MARC formals to give access to gopher sites.  相似文献

A majority of Americans surveyed indicated a need for occupational information and career planning assistance. Career counseling is a process of examining individual needs, goals, values, workplace issues, and personal constraints, as well as information about occupations, career ladders, options and specific employment opportunities, and relating all this information to make decisions about work and other career issues. Developmental theories of career counseling can be used as a framework for examining theories of career development. Other ways to examine career development are through occupational choices, work adjustment, a combination of choice and adjustment process theories, and decision-making. The role of the librarian is one of facilitating access to the abundance of career information available, and empowering patrons to use this information to make intelligent decisions about not only their careers, but also other areas of their lives as well.  相似文献

Information literacy is vital to students seeking employment following their undergraduate education. Yet little is known about how students approach using information as part of their career search. This phenomenographic study examined how students experience using information as part of a career fair, or on-campus job expo. Researchers interviewed undergraduate students after a major campus career fair. The findings suggest that students may experience using information in a career fair context as: 1) navigators completing a series of steps, 2) performers seeking to connect with the right person, or 3) aligners determining if a company is a match for them.  相似文献

VERONICA stands for Very Easy Rodent-Oriented Net-Wide Index to Computerized Archives and is a service that allows users to search all menu levels of gopher sites. The development of such a tool became necessary to enable users to search for resources on the gopher sites without having to go to each site individually and search each menu level. This article will explain how to access the service and perform searches. How to read search results, look for strings in specific documents and download desired documents will also be explained. Examples of potential questions will illustrate these various procedures. While VERONICA can be used effectively by librarians to answer reference questions, many professionals in the field are somewhat daunted by this very powerful and relatively new reference tool. Examining reference questions that can be answered using VERONICA will shed some light on its effectiveness, thus giving librarians a better sense of how VERONICA fits into the overall reference process.  相似文献

Affect plays an important role in the information behavior of early career academics. While there is a recognition of the importance of affect to information behavior in the information science literature, there has been a lack of empirical research that details its influence. Using a constructivist grounded theory methodology, early career academics were followed for a 5- to 7-month period and data were collected using in-depth and brief, ‘check-in’ interviews. Three prominent aspects of early career academics' affective experiences are described and their connection to specific information behavior is discussed, including feelings of: stress (linked to prioritization, information nonuse, information avoidance, and information seeking from colleagues); frustration (linked to prioritization and decision making to discontinue, persevere, or change tactics); and, stability and belonging (linked to comparison as a way of using information, seeking help, building information relationships, and sharing information with colleagues).  相似文献

As more navigational tools, such as Archie, WAIS, Gopher, World-Wide-Web and VERONICA are introduced on the Internet, it is critical that reference librarians understand the function of each one. VERONICA (Very Easy. Rodent-Oriented. Net-Wide Index to Computerized Archives) is the newest, and most powerful tool, and it takes away the mystery of where files are hidden on the Internet. Using specific examples, this article takes the reader through step-by-step guides of menu choices showing how VERONICA is accessed through a Gopher client using simple keyword and Boolean searching. In addition, this article discusses the limitations and frustrations encountered when attempting to access information using gopher servers.  相似文献

Parents are an important source of advice when adolescents are faced with decisions about postsecondary education and career planning; however, parents often need to seek information to facilitate their child’s career development. This study applies the theory of motivated information management (TMIM) to evaluate the decision-making process parents undergo in this context and tests the boundaries of TMIM by considering how individuals use face-to-face (FtF) and online sources to alleviate uncertainty-related anxieties. A community sample of parents (N?=?937) completed a survey regarding their information seeking behaviors surrounding their adolescent’s career development. Parents reported using both FtF and online sources to seek information about their child’s postsecondary plans, and they engaged in different evaluative processes depending on the source of information. Theoretical implications related to TMIM and practical implications related to parents as sources of information in adolescent career development are discussed.  相似文献

Abstract

This article presents an annotated list of career and employment web sites to assist librarians and job seekers with locating information on all aspects of career and job searching. General indexes to career and employment resources are provided, along with sites specializing in career fairs, resume services, relocation and newsgroups. The aim of this paper is to present stable, comprehensive, and well maintained sites that provide resources and services without charge. However, some sites that charge for services, such as resume evaluation and writing, have been included because they also offer links to other sites and information that could be useful to a job searcher.  相似文献

Occupational information plays a central role in the process of personal career exploration and decision-making. The proliferation, popularity, and high cost of printed, computerized and videotaped occupational information require librarians to assess the material's value prior to purchase and following its use. Fortunately, a number of resources and professional guidelines exist to assist in this endeavor. This chapter describes those factors that need to be taken into account, and the resources available to facilitate the evaluation of occupational information for use in libraries and career resource centers.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

One of the most versatile and dynamic career paths available to information specialists is that of UX or user experiences. Graduate students seeking careers in UX may benefit by enrolling in and completing a basic reference class. This article provides support for this option through the reflections of a faculty member teaching reference courses, a UX specialist who was one of her students, and the director of career services who helps students and apply for UX positions and others in the information fields.  相似文献

What began as a career networking support group in the living room of a visionary Smith College alumna has grown into a nationally recognized, independent nonprofit career development organization. Today Alumnae Resources provides a comprehensive range of services to thousands of college-educated women and men, most with liberal arts backgrounds. AR's career development model focuses on the need for information, and as the organization has grown and advanced technologically, so has its core, the Resource Center. The library now provides a variety of electronic tools for individual career research. Though some may be intimidated by this electronic environment, their education can be an advantage in adapting to the ncw technology and succeeding in the changing workplace.  相似文献

Call for Papers
Issues with unemployment, underemployment, and inadequate preparation have raised concerns about what colleges are doing to ready students for post-graduate careers, but little discussion exists regarding students’ roles in the process. Students play active roles in the anticipatory socialization process, so this study examines the factors that influence college students to seek career information from the Internet, using the comprehensive model of information seeking (CMIS) as a framework. Results demonstrated a good fit to the model, with Internet experience exerting the strongest influence on participants’ Internet self-efficacy, perceptions of information source quality, and, in turn, perceptions of information source usefulness and information seeking intentions. However, several proposed paths were not significant, suggesting the need for replication studies and further research. Results provide theoretical support for the CMIS as a viable framework beyond health information seeking and identify multiple practical applications and opportunities for future research on career information seeking.  相似文献

OBJECTIVES: To obtain basic information about non-librarian health professionals who become librarians and information specialists. METHODS: The survey was a Web-based questionnaire. A non-random sample of persons was obtained by posting messages to several large Internet electronic discussion groups. Individuals who met the selection criteria and were willing to participate filled out a Web-based form designed using common gateway interface (CGI) programming. RESULTS: 118 forms were analyzed. Three subgroups of participants were identified and statistical comparisons among these groups were carried out for many of the quantitative questions. Information concerning reasons they left their original field; factors influencing their choice of the field of library and information science; reactions of family, friends, and colleagues; and interactions with patrons and other information about this group was obtained and summarized. A health sciences background was seen as helpful in the new career as information specialist. Most people were happy with their new profession despite negative reactions from colleagues, relatives, and, occasionally, patrons. Feelings of regret and abandonment of their patients were noted by some. Many persons did not know that peers had made similar career changes. CONCLUSIONS: A health sciences background imparts an expertise in both the vocabulary and subject matter of medicine that non-biomedical individuals would not ordinarily have. Although becoming a librarian may be perceived as a very positive career change for an individual, societal opinion and pressure can make such a career change difficult. Nevertheless, participants in this survey demonstrate a high level of satisfaction with their new careers and are quite happy with their work.  相似文献
