Summary

In the sciences, there is a wide assortment of information in electronic form and accessible to anyone with the computer communications, hardware, and software prerequisites. For those in search of literature citations, numerical values, commonly accepted facts, word-for-word of published text, and even sound reproductions and to some extent still or living images, the Internet-posted formats have much to offer. In this paper, especially useful or interesting Web sites for reference in any of the basic science fields are identified.

Abstract

Many web sites on the Internet are useful in helping answer reference questions in geography and international studies. This paper describes web sites which provide maps, gazetteers and country information. Also included are web guides which collect and organize numerous links to geographical and international sites.

Evaluating Physical Science Reference Sources on the Internet

In the past few years numerous sources of interest to Physical Science reference librarians have become available on the Internet. This article classifies and reviews a representative sample of these sources and suggests criteria for evaluating the mle of these new sources in a physical sciences reference setting. Although the focus of the article is on reference sources in the sciences, the evaluation criteria apply other disciplines as well.

Thanks to the Internet, the average investor today has access to more information about potential investments and their performance than has been available at any time in the past. When called upon to aid in filtering through this information, the business reference librarian is also faced with the challenge of knowing what is “out there” and how to find it. This article identifies sites that provide information about stocks and their exchanges, mutual funds, bonds, company annual reports, and taxes.

Internet Reference Resources for the Life Sciences

Abstract

A virtual cornucopia of resources is available for biologists on the Internet. Many have been put up by biologists themselves; others have been mounted by organizations, government agencies or commercial businesses. In some cases, the best or only way to obtain the information is via the Internet (e.g., the gene sequence information from Genbank). Over sixty Internet biological resources are reviewed in this report in which the life sciences have been defined to include all areas of biology, agriculture and veterinary science except those which pertain to the environment or human medicine.

Abstract

There are an enormous number of web-based Internet resources available in the performing arts. They have been created by hobbyists, amateurs, professionals, and corporations for commercial and recreational purposes. With proper evaluation, a number of sites can be useful in the provision of reference services in libraries. Collected here are Internet sites in the areas of music, dance, film/cinema, and theater/drama that are useful when answering typical reference questions in these performing arts.

Summary

With so many Internet sites devoted to education for educators, administrators, and librarians, it can be a daunting experience trying to find needed resources. There are special sites devoted to teachers, children, and parents. The government provides free access to database searching, statistics, and full-text publications. State and local levels of government also host valuable data and reports. More and more journals are appearing online in full-text format escalating user expectation to assume all journals will be available via the Internet. Tapping into higher education and academic library sites connects to content rich links. While this is not an exhaustive listing of educational Web sites, it leads to a myriad of valuable resources.     

The Impact of the Internet on Communication Among Reference Librarians

The primary purpose of this article is to begin to, explore the effects of electronic media and the Internet on communication among reference librarians. We present a brief summary of the literature on communication bv librarians. followed bv a discussion of electronic media and theiieffect on human com~unication. In order to exolore these issues in the context of reference librarians. we discuss re'sults of a survey on their communication habits, electronic and otherwise. In order to see how librarians actually use listservs, the contents of BI-L, LIBREF-L, and PACS-L are categorized by type of message and analyzed in the context of computer-mediated communication. Conclusions are given.

The Internet and Reference Librarians:

This paper examines the efforts of the McGill University Humanities and Social Sciences Library Reference staff to integrate the use of resources found on the hernet with traditional reference duties. It also discusses the Internet instruction workshops designed and implemented by reference staff to help librarians and the university community understand and navigate the Internet. The relationship with McGill's Computing Centre and Department of Educational and Counselling Psychology is examined and a case is made for increased collaboration with other areas concerning Internet instruction and use. Lastly, the proactive role of reference staff concerning the introduction of the Internet to other library staff and to the university community is also discussed.
